Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just submitted a request to those people who review iphone and apple products to do a video on this. I mean those guys have millions of subs. Espically with the iphone 5 released more and more people are tuning to them.

Yea, I think people who review things should touch on this more as well. I really find it funny that we aren't hearing more about this in reviews and blog posts. There's a few, but there should be a lot more. Brand loyalty? I don't know.

I know, this stupid, but what choice to we have? This is some seriously lame David-and-Goliath garbage we're dealing with here. At this point though, I'm not going to accept anything BUT a Samsung display in my rMBP. I will keep fighting until I get that too, because I do NOT and will NOT trust LG...period.

Just to add to the statistics, got my MBP in August, noticed IR today. Will see what apple store guys will sing to me tomorrow, I heard they are not too eager to issue replacements.

I am also having IR issues. I purchased a base model Retina MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz/8 GB RAM/256 GB HD) the day they were announced and received it a couple weeks later. Having heard about IR issues through various Apple blogs and podcasts, I checked when my rMBP arrived and didn't notice any image persistence issues.

This week I'm really starting to notice it though. I called Apple's phone tech support and the representative I spoke with on the phone said this was a known issue. He offered to either set up an appointment with an Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store, or ship me a box to have me ship the unit back for repair. I declined and said I would set up my own Genius Bar appointment, which I did for this weekend.

I (finally) found the proper Terminal command to check which LCD display I have and (drum roll, please) it's an LG. Same model number as what others here have been posting.

This thread has obviously been garning a lot of attention, so I think that proves the issue is not simply isolated. At the same time, it has not really been a huge topic for news coverage. I think that because it takes awhile for the IR issue to manifest, combined with the fact that in some cases image retention is really only visible under certain circumstances (e.g. single-colour backgrounds), more people are not noticing their units are affected. If the issue truly does get worse over time, visibilty of the issue should increase.

After reading this thread for the past few days, I am tempted to cancel my Genius Bar appointment for this weekend. I'm uncertain that I'll receive a unit back that has no IR issues and after reading about the runaround people here have been given with constant repair and replacements, I'm not sure I want to deal with that. Perhaps I should just wait to see if Apple makes a formal announcement about the issue? I'm past the 14-day return period but the issue is not to the point where it's hindering my work and I could just wait it out to see how things unfold. Thoughts?

I've seen this happen with many various Apple products.  You are just putting out FUD now.  I remember when one of the iMacs had a screen or overheating or some other problems.  The threads went exactly like this one.  No word from Apple, every one going crazy about how Apple was abondoning their customers etc etc.  Well it took a few months and then the neccessary changes were made and you stopped hearing about that particular problem.  Look at the Final Cut X role out, huge uproar and then Apple started saying hang in there and you will see the features etc.  And so they did.  Despite the fact that several of you are having severe problems and it doesn't seem like you can get satisfaction and all you can see is your problem now, the fact is this common scenario has occured many times and as far as I know have always been corrected though never fast enough for the early adopters having issues.  You are only speculating when you think that Apple will not or cannot bring about changes in LG production but they first will engineer the solution as to whether its software or hardware and where the problem is exactly.  You can't just FIX it instantly, as much as your personal situation is demanding it.  These are scaled economics and changes take a little time, whether that means to increasing product from Samsung or a fix in LG production.

So far 2 weeks in, no IR on my LG.  Now I have to get through the 1 month barrier.

Good luck all, I really hope they fix this soon.

these are all good words, but what about the people that spent N dollars on a defected product?

We're complaining about the beta hardware released. We're not beta testers. Apple is using us as a testing phase of a, probably, great product.

But as it's now it's far far away from a perfect product.

First post, first Mac, first LG, first IR on day 1 - right after unboxing.

This is a great machine with some minor issues. The keyboard is good, but lacks depth. Speakers are fine, but my 1K Win7 laptop has built-in JBLs and those are way better. Design-wise rMBP is the best among all laptops. MacOS is nice and clean, but a little buggy. Everything else is just great.

So I am fine with the speakers, I can live with a shallow keyboard it's just OK, and I can say the IR is no big deal... well NO, it IS a big deal, because it is horrible! I am using XCode and Sublime Text 2, and after coding 3 minutes on XCode and switching to Sublime, I can see all my code. Well isn't this a feature? I can see my code for 2-3 more minutes.

Seriously, the display is magnificent except IR. No dead pixels, colors are accurate enough, max. brightness could be a little brighter but that's good enough. Everything is great or at least acceptable, but it is unusable for coding or graphics work.

I will send mine for a screen replacement, and see how it goes. I don't care if I get an LG or Samsung, I just want a good display. If a software fix is enough, I will accept that gladly.

Week 34, LG, DCN23xx... same as Dr Sly. - BTO 2.6/16/512

What is the terminal command (or where do I look) to get the build week and display manufacturer?
