Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just got my 4th rMBP, again LG. Testing for IR, but I'm 99% sure it will have it. As we can see even people who at the begining believed they have no IR, after a few days see it on their machines.

And IR visible very well after barely 10 mins of displaying main google page. I think there is really no hope of getting a good screen anymore.

After a few discussion with support (and some wining) they are now offering me 3 options

    1. keep my current machine
    2. Get a replacement - they cannot guarantee the replacement won't have the issue as it is considered to be "in the specs" - and I won't be able to have another replacement unit if that one is faulty again (they're making an exception)
    3. Get a refund

... and I have 1 week to give my decision

I have really no idea how to handle that...

I guess refund + reorder ? any advice?

I know, this stupid, but what choice to we have? This is some seriously lame David-and-Goliath garbage we're dealing with here. At this point though, I'm not going to accept anything BUT a Samsung display in my rMBP. I will keep fighting until I get that too, because I do NOT and will NOT trust LG...period.

Canuck - you mentioned that we should get some official Apple statement soon. Do you have any update on it? I'm wondering, because I'm really tired and need my new machine, but don't want to be left with faulty product that will be considered 'within specs'.

I'm wondering why there is no class action yet on this?

I'd take the refund if I was you, and go something safe such as cMBP with 15" or an Air..  I really starting to get the idea that there is no short term sollution to this issue..

Mine has image retention, which it shouldn't have but its not as bad as some member people like Tadziak and others have.. Now I've already contacted apple, and went to apple store. My machine was 1.5 months old. and all they want to do is replace the screen.. which is no option unless they can garantee an Samsung screen...  which they cant...

    argh...

I'm also really really worrried about resale value. Once word gets out that these machine have IR issues.. bye bye resell value... Thank you Apple...

There is no class action lawsuit because NO LCD manufacturer warranties against IR. There may possibly be a lawsuit that Apple shipped two different Retinas with two different display technologies, but not sure how you would classify IR as a defect when no lcd manufacturer warranties against it.

Guys every LG is going to have IR it is a result of IPS displays and is a known problem in IPS technology. It just happens that the second source or backup manufacturer (samsung) uses a different technology -- Super PLS not IPS, which in all likelihood is why you don't see IR on the Samsung displays.

Yes it is unacceptable, and I wish they would have waited to go all SPLS or IGZO instead of IPS, but they decided to go with AH-IPS displays. My good LG screen has deeper blacks and truer color then my buddies Samsung to be honest, but his Samsung doesn't have IR. So if you do not want IR, have fun with the Samsung lottery, or wait a year until the IGZO displays come out.

Personally I would have waited if I hadn't just sold my old mbp, and I am tempted to get a regular mbp but I just felt like I was going back in time, so for now I deal with IR and run this stupid white background screensaver. I will say this, NEVER again will I buy an Apple first year product and I will tell everyone I know the same, they are incapable if getting it right the first time around period.

But wouldn't class action draw that attention?

I wish some serious lawyers bought the rMBP with an issue this way I guess proble would be sold much quicker.

If someone can find one lawsuit involving image persistence or image retention please let me know. Apple will give you a full refund if you are unsatisified with the product and complain enough, but as they have shown, they are unwilling to give people a 'custom' retina with a samsung display.

Get out now and get a refund, play the sammy lottery, or accept IR.

Past 14 days, replace until they refuse to replace anymore, take pictures of severe IR, call Apple and demand a full refund or they will be speaking with your lawyer, send back get full refund.

I'd get a refund and wait this out. Buy a different, more proven product until this issue is resolved.

I called Apple about it and they were perfectly honest: "And what do you expect from us now? Refund/Another replacement (probably again with same problem)? I honestly don't know what to do, because I don't want to loose me 14 days window and then get stuck with it. Especially that in my country there are not Genius Bars and any service takes at least a week.

What's worse, the unit also has a slight dent in the bottom panel. I would'nt mind it if the screen was perfect, but in this case - IR + dent is a bit much!photo 1.JPG

In my opinion, if you're within the 14 day return period, you have nothing to lose by returning it.
