Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    @indefinitedrums

    As far as I know, most people who got Sammy were replacing the whole machine, not just the screen. I beleive youre right, wouldn't suprise me at all if they have a different connectors. I've seen this be the case with MBP 13's from different generations..

    @flat earth

    I've talked with several Applecare reps and they all share my idea that its not right that screen has IR. problem is, as several posters on this forum have corborated, Its thats all IPS screens have this issues with IR, only some have it much stronger that others. Thing is, they screens can be used interchangebly, i.e. Apple does not see them as different screens, only we, as customers do. Some have IR and Sammy screens do not. If me was you, I definitly hold off with buying a machine until this issue is resolved. Only, I don't have the patience, time and money to wait for apple to fix this..

    Hey guys,

    I just got my replacement Mac (the third Mac, the 4th screen, I let them repair it once).

    This mac was built week 36.

    When I turned on the new machine, I noticed it had a pinkish tint.. :/ I checked what kind of screen it was, it's a Samsung, but now I have a pinkish tint which ***** again. So I am here with a display which won't be exhibiting IR (finally) but now the colors are off in another direction (the mac before this one has a yellow tint on top of IR)-

    I am giving up on it, getting a refund and that's it for me I guess.

    try the builtin mac screen calibration.  That should fix the pink.

    Just wanted to mention that apple store guys seems to be aware of the problem at this point. They started replacement order right after I showed them the IR problem on the screen. This will be my first replacement, will see how it goes.

    regarding the display identifiying app error...

    Sorry, I have not replied to that post of the guy explaining to do the trick with the sotware security, since I have this setting set indefinitely, for the time being at least:

    Screen Shot 2012-09-13 at 21.36.15.png

    If you did reproduce the error on your iMac, can you produce a remedy as well...?

    FYI, this is waht my screen looks like after two months. I suspected image retention as I was opening a remote desktop wit iTap. I was so naive to think it had some opacity layer while it wasn't fully loaded. I am not accepting this from a € 2.000 + device, and I hope a fix will spontaniously be presented by Apple.

    Is it too much to ask for what we paid for?

    Well, that's essentiall what the discussion is about.

    Apple never promised a screen w/o any IR (which they wouldn't since their position seems to be "IR is normal in all LCD screens"), so from their standpoint (as communicated by some Apple people), you did get what you paid for.

    Now, what you WANT is a screen without IR, and you assumed that's what you would get (quite reasonably since almost every other computer you can buy out there won't have IR), but that doesn't mean Apple didn't deliver what they promised.

    And realistically, Apple is probably in the exact same situation with LG. I'm pretty sure Apple also WANTS LG screens that don't have IR issues, but LG is probably telling them that this wasn't specified in their contract and that IR is normal in LCD screens (and pointing to similar examples that we've been pointed to).

    Clearly that's a pretty customer-hostile way of looking at things, but to be fair, Apple is doing a pretty good job of letting people return the computer and get their money back if they aren't happy having a computer with IR issues.

    The real problem is the inconsistency...some screens (Samsung) are good and others (LG) are not, but at the moment Apple has no way to effectively control which screen you get without relying on a single source (Samsung) which can't meet their demand. There are probably also legal issues with cancelling the contract with LG for not meeting performance standards that were never mentioned in their contract.

    I really do think that Apple does want the rMBP to be the "best laptop they've ever made" (or however they said it), and if you get one with a Samsung screen, it probably is. But the LG screens are creating a nightmare for everyone involved (us and Apple).

    Yeah JustSayNo that's very nice and all but why can't Apple let customers know this is a known issue BEFORE WE GO OUT AND WASTE OUR TIME! Time is money my friend and I can speak for everyone here that is having problems with IR or Display problems since I wasted 3 weeks of work in the rMbp lottery until I got a samsung display. Now you tell me how fair would it be for Apple to publicly warn customers about this problem?

    I have noticed several posts mentioning a CALS have been deleted. I hope mine doesn't get deleted, so I won't even write the words but hopefully most of you are smart enough to know what I am talking about.

    This is the thing, it doesn't matter whether one could win a CALS regarding IR or not. The very existence of a public filing and the resultant publicity from all of the Apple hating bloggers in the world would probably force Apple to respond and "do the right thing" by replacing all LG screens with a Samsung display.

    I am really, really surprised this hasn't happened yet.

    I'm on my second laptop (first was replaced completely) and now they want to just repair the screen. I assume the replacement screen would be the same type as this one and might be subject to the problem.

    Ideally I want the whole machine just replaced again (and from what I read, with a Samsung display).

    PS: Might be worth someone posting "what we know so far" post just so people joining the discussion have another starting point. 199 pages of madness so far

    Hi, a little off topic (but still because of the IR crap!) - please can someone answer my question about returns (within the 14 day grace period). I ordered online and so a courier will come to collect my returns (one LG sent back already). However, I am unsure whether the "14 days" means that I have to have contacted Apple and arrange the Return Authorisation number within the 14 days (even if the date when the courier actually comes for collection is say Day 16), or whether the courier has to actually come and collect the package within those 14 days too?

    My 2nd rMBP arrived Monday, but I immediately ordered another because this one (although a Samsung thank god) has a small mark on the body and keys are feeling very clunky compared to the first (LG with IR) I had. The next one will arrive Thurs/Fri next week and I want to hold off deciding whether to return this Samsung until the next one has come (since if the next one is LG again, I may just keep this one and deal with the keys). So when the next one comes, I will still be within the 14 day grace period for this Samsung, but it will be Day 12/13 of the grace period when/if I contact Apple to request a return. Since this falls on a weekend, it will be Day 15/16 when the courier can actually come for pickup. Will this still be ok for a return? I'm hoping that it is the day which you actually request the return authorisation which counts.

    Thanks in advance.
