Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Finally, success! Third time's the charm for me, got a Samsung display. My build week's 31. Will run more test to thoroughly check the display.

    It's a custom order @watertube or not?

I wonder if this may affect the choice of using a particular screen supplier..

Alright guys, I just confirmed that I have a LG screen using the terminal command posted earlier. My machine was manufactured week 31 (July) and I received it on July 30th. I've heard about the display burn-in issue before making my purchase online but I went ahead and got myself one anyway. In any case my screen doesn't experience any IR issues whatsoever. It has been day 2 now, but I will report back if I ever see the slightest IR on my display.

I would just like to let people know that I don't believe the problem has anything to do with the manufacturer, but rather the QC of the laptop itself. Apple has probably caught on by now and have made arrangements to fix the IR problem. Like I said before, I have a LG screen as my Retina Display, and it is absolutely gorgeous with no flaws or dead pixels. I just wanted to throw this out there so people don't need to discriminate against the brands and feel the need to return/replace/exchange their perfectly fine rMBP with one that has a specific model no. display.

Please note I'm NOT saying that you WON'T get a faulty display, but if you get a new batch, it will most likely be fine.

Very much agreed! This discussion of display issues seems to be getting out of hand, and will only cause undeserved headaches for Apple when they get returned products that test out just fine.

As I posted a few pages back, my Week 31 LG display has been flawless for me.

Sorry but you are wrong. There is a very strong positive correlation with LG and IR. none of the samsung screens has ever had a report of IR.

yes, it's the 2.3/16/256. my first one had a cosmetic defect, second one had ghosting with LG screen.

after requesting a second replacement, a member of the management representative personally called me on Saturday and provided me with his direct number to call if there's anything wrong with this third mbp.

if anyone's having problems do call and let Apple know. the turn around time for replacement is pretty fast. my first one was delivered to me 3 days after giving fedex my return, second one 7 days (would have been sooner if not for fedex holding it in alaska and japan for 2 days).

Thanks for the info about the possible replacement times. I wonder if that changes greatly with a CTO. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tonight at 7:15. Hoping to get a replacement machine ordered then.

You called apple and they just said okay we'll replace your computer without you showing them any evidence? that's weird.

They will replace it no questions asked if you're within your 14 day period. It's not likely people are bullshitting when they want to replace a brand new system. Who would?

Right, i see what you're saying. When I asked for my local apple store to order me a replacement and in return i'll give them my laptop (still within the 14 days) they said no. I can only refund within the 14 days.

    ridiculous.

my nearest apple store is a 3 hr round trip, no way was i going to drive there just to return a defective item. when it's within the 14 day return period, it's pretty easy to return if you are unhappy with it.

and when you said you got your first replacement within 3 days, how did the apple send you your return label? did they email it to you? because from what I know, they will only send replacements after they have received your laptop in California.

Apple is inconsistent on their store policies.  And if you aren't happy with the product, then they have two options.  Either you will get a replacement and retain the purchase amount or they lose the sale and you get a refund.  They obviously would likely rather keep your money.

LG panels by their very nature are generally pretty bad units.  The screens on the iMac, iPad, iPhone, and not macbooks are usually always terrible. It would be nice to see Apple dump them as a supplier.

they will send you a prepaid fedex return label by email. once fedex has it and scans it, that gives Apple the ok to begin shipping out a replacement.

Hi, I'm writing from Italy. Until now i had 4 (!!!) macbook retina. I ordered the first one on June, 11th. This macbook had 5-6 not working pixels (white pixels on white background... brillant like stars). So I asked for refund to italian Apple Store online. On July, 18th I acquired at Apple Store in Milan a new MBPr, entry model. This MBPr had a black dead pixel in the middle of the screen and I asked for a new laptop. This third MBPr had an LG screen (mad on week 25th) and terrible retention. The fourth MBPr I received on yesterday at Milan Apple Store is an LG screen, 30th week made. Until now no retention but the screen has there lines darker (two horizontal and one vertical) that you can see clearly with dark grey background.

The only thing to do is returning to Apple Store and asking for refund (in Italy they don't change more than 3 computers) and buying it online hoping in Samsung screen.

Unfortunately I need a new mac for working, but I think this laptop is only a prototype... Too much problems with these screens for a so expensive (professional?!) product!!!
