Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

That said there are other reasons it may affect professionals if it were a real problem.

Thank you for solidifying my point.

And also, just because someone else got a panel with a technology which exhibits different behaviour, doesn't mean you have got a sour deal.

Yes, it does; especially when there is an expectation set that the behaviour will be the same. We may have to agree to disagree on this point because the reality is that for some people this is a legitimate concern whereas others don't care very much. I paid a lot of money and I want my machine to operate like the next guy (he has a Samsung display in his).

The bottom line is that this product has been out for a couple of months now, there has been no recall, there has been no major consumer backlash.

There are over 3000 posts in this thread and over 250,000 views. When you compare that to other threads in Apple's discussion forums, this one stands out quite significantly.

Apple issued a recall for the 2008 Time Capsule's in 2010. Only just recently did supply catch up with demand on the rMBP, plus Apple has been focusing on launching major updates for OS X, iOS, iPhone and iPod. It serves to reason they need time to assess the situation and come up with a strategy. I really expect they will address this, but I also think they have had a lot on their plate up until this point and need to stay focused.

In most countries in Europe atleast there are laws that protect customers from being ripped off like this. So everyone who's denied replacement or refund by Apple should check what the law says... and perhaps ask again with the proper legalese.

Funny how these argument starters were away for a while around the new iphone launch.

To those graphic artists having IR problems.  Are you having them just when you turn your screen dark grey and then let an image or checkerboard or whatever it sit for a while, or are you actually seeing bleed through or ghosting while working in your apps?

Mine was so bad on my 3 week old LG screen that it was noticeable 15% on regular graphics and 50% on gray backgrounds!

Wow.  Yes I would be taking that back.  Well, I'm exactly 2 weeks in and if I turn dark grey I'm getting a slight IR. Is not visible on a light grey background and if I change the dk grey to light grey it goes away, if I turn it back to dark grey it appreas again.  It does not show on a desk top screenphoto no matter how long I leave it.  It has not shown up in using Aperture (which I had a several hour session).  Only happens if I try to make it happen on dark grey background.  I will be watching this closely, and if it gets bad, I will turn it in to repair the screen because otherwise I love this computer.  However, I will wait until the problem gets sorted.  It seems that unless I want to just turn it in for refund or another model, to be senseless to keep turning them in hoping to get a Samsung.  I'd rather wait a couple of months (as long as its reasonably usable) before I ask to get the screen replaced because it seems like spitting into the wind right now.  As Apple has not sorted it out yet, no point acting until they do.  Why replace a bad screen with another bad screen.  So far it's totally usable, so I will just watch and see what happens.

Are you still within the 14 day exchange period? I would highly suggest an exchange if you live in California I got my Samsung model from Brea store... Not sure if this makes any diffrence but hopefully helps.

Thanks skinemup, but I have a special order 2.6 with 16mb and I don't think they carry those (only 2.7 w/16) and it seems like a crapshoot.  I'm 14 days today. So its too late, though they probably would honor it.  Do you have to make a "genuis" appontment first?  I'm thinking about it, but I don't really see IR unless I contort to make it happen so I'm not sure its that big of a problem.  But I'm thinking......:) Isn't it bloody hot?  No AC here, just fans. (I know OT)

I am in day 4, still have IR but no change in severity. I can confirm the IR is easier to reproduce in a warmer environment, and also using smaller checkerboard patterns resulted in more visible IR and ghost image lasted longer on the display. When using 1/2 inch square pattern the IR was visible after 3 minutes and faded in 2 minutes, after changing the square size to 2 inches IR was visible only after 10 minutes and faded in under 1 min.

I also have a darker vertical band (about 1/6 inch wide) visible on gray background, on the right hand side of the display, a little to the left of the scrollbar position. It is like faint IR, but it isn't because it never disappears. Anyone having a similar problem?

Start your rMBP holding the Option button. Select the recovery partition and from there use Disk Utilities to erase your SSD

    - that was fast :-)

I was gonna say the same, but do read erase and not format or so.

If you format, you leave the possibilty to recover stuff. But who the heck would wanna do that?

Has Anyone out there downloaded the Latest Beta of Osx 10.8.2??

It got released yesterday and it's the second time Apple has seeded an Osx Beta in three days which does indicate that for the general masses it's gonna be out soon, but was curious to know if it really is an incremental update in terms of battery hours and whether it resolves the issue all rMBP owners are facing to a certain extent or not since everybody is saying that Apple apparently is aware of the issue.

I know this issue might not get resolved by a software or firmware update but i just don't wanna lose hope cause i cant return my rMBP even if i wish to,other than the IR this is one heck of an amazing notebook and the same goes for the screen as well.

My original post was around thread page 180 here.. I had a LG display purchased in mid-late August from MacMall.. 2.3Ghz, 16GB.. I sent it back yesterday because I was able to continue to read the email text even after putting a grey webpage over the email window   I had no issues for a couple weeks then it started to appear.. I am not sure I can quanitfy this but it also appeared as though the screen was not as bright as it originally was.

I am contemplating re-ordering from Apple directly.  Does anyone have any current info on what is currently being shipped directly from Apple?  Are they still a mix of Samsung and LG displays or is there anyone with an LG display that has ordered directly from Apple in the past couple weeks that still does not have any issues?

Will calling Apple and asking if the issue is resolved before placing my order have any hope of getting an answer?

My second rMBP had that column, also on the right edge of the screen but about 0.5" wide. I wrote about it on this thread. That MBP was the worst of all three. Apart from IR, it also had a pair of white horizontal lines going from right edge to the middle of screen and a black scratch mark to the left of the trackpad.

Of course all of this has gotten past the amazing Apple QA.
