Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

This absolutely *****, I got the green light to buy in the morning and now I found this thread. It's not like apple can't afford to pull all these lg's and make it apple's problem instead of making their loyal customer's problem.

All this for the most expensive notebook around? Shame on you apple. This is not right.

I went through the first 30 pages of posts on this thread and saw that there was NO correlation between what your computer configuration is and what display you get.  All three models (2.3, 2.6, 2.7) all had the chance of getting a Samsung or LG display.  This may have changed later but that is what I found up through posts dated early August.  The bottom line is is that if you get an LG display return it immediately.  Nearly every person that said how great their LG display was came back later and said it eventually had problems (including me).  There were some issues with Samsung displays with bad pixels but you were basically gauranteed to have a problem in the future with an LG display and image retention.  It was also recommended that you call 800-APL-CARE instead of 800-MY-APPLE to get a replacement.  Some people had problems getting replacements using MY-APPLE.

I am still contemplating whether I want to play this lottery again.

After 1 month and 5 returns I ask for a refund today; I don't want to play the screen lottery anymore. I think I will wait for the next generation. For me all LG screen have the IR problem.

Well, I was looking to buy one soon, but certainly won't be until this issue is fixed.   I'll keep my $3000.

    Today is a sad day

Day 6 with my beloved rMBP. I love the machine. It is silent, It is fast and it is a delight to do my work on. The screen is (was) great, no dead pixels, good contrast, good brightness.

I design electronic audio circuit products. (PCB's) So that means unfortunatly sometimes you have the static image of the CAD design on your screen for hours. For 6 days I had no IR at all. I never checked checkboard images because I always felt that is "abusing" your screen. However today when I switched from my CAD design to a PDF file, I saw my whole CAD design burned into my screen, most obvious on grey backgrounds It took around 15 a 20 minutes to dissapear.

Secondly, (I swear it wasn't there before) on the right side of the screen I starting to get sort of a redish glow, visible in the blacks.

Please help me out what to do now... If IR doesn't get worse then this I think I can live with it. Will it get worse, more intense over time?

I have sold my previous cMBP17" and I am on the road far from home. So this computer is all I have and need for my work.

    I have basicly 4 options:

1: Send this one back, pray for a Samsung screen and get my 3rd replacement (I will work on my 11" MBA)

2: Ask for a refund, and wait a few months and try again. In the meanwhile I suffer deep and work on my 11" MBA

3: I Forget about Apple and search for the best PC lapop availble. I have already switched from CADSOFT Eagle (Mac program) to PC based Altium and use parallels most of the times. But I love OS-X. If this option is choosen, what are really good PC laptops those days?

4: Keep this one and live with the flaws.

It *****. I spend almost $4000 on this fully speced out laptop. Why can't Apple just put the best screen in it. It really isn't impossible, since some people here have good screens.

Any advice and input would be welcome. Thanks.

The more we ask for refund and buy new ones, the more aware has Apple to become this is a really big problem they have to solve. There will be a point where they'll have too many returns to be overlooked...

I don't want to hurt the company, I just want a flawless machine, that's all!

I had the same issues with my rMBP whith LG display. Luckily I got replacement which is made by Samsung and everything works fine.

It is ironicaly that the only company that cares about making good Apple products is its main rival - Samsung.

Hopefully Apple will do the right thing and choose Samsung as its main display supplier because I don't like to pay $2000-3000 for products that needs to be replaced for few times to make it usable.

This was the most accurate post i've seen in the past few days. It's exactly the same as my opinion.

@Sly So I picked up a rMBP prob the same day or day after you got yours. I have been using it exactly the way I would in real world use. Brightness @75%, Screen off after 5min idle,Sleep after 15min idle. No need for me to push maximum brightness with checkerboards and such because i'll never do that.

Yesterday I worked on an image in PS for about 3 hours and in any situation from PS to browsing to iWork experienced no IR.

So i'm not sure if i have a good screen or if it is simply because I'm using it as I would normally but so far so good. I have 7 days left and have avoided using it with my Cinema display to really evaluate it properly. You are right the display is amazing and after calibrating it looks even better. Fingers crossed

@transfix: I don't think there has been a single instance of an LG display not eventually going bad.  It took mine about 2 weeks.

How much worse will it get after 2 weeks or longer? No it takes a while before IR kicks in and it dissapears pretty fast as well. Will it get worse after a while?

You should do the test, transfix.

15 minutes of a static image is far from being abusive!

I will re-test mine every day until Thursday (day before my 14 days period), and if it aggravates, I'll backup again and return the rMBP.

I really crave a Samsung PLS now :-(
