Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Well, for what its worth, I wonder if the issue is at all heat related as some say.  I have a two + week old LG week 36.  Last Thus or so it started exhibiting a slight IR problem on only a dark grey background, not lt. grey, not black, and not a screen image.  It would exhibit after about 10 minutes. If I changed background to lt grey while the image was there it would disappear, same with a desktop photo image. If I then changed back to drk grey, it would show again.  The ambient temp was almost 95+ when I tested it but the MBPr didn't get over hot at all.  Today, I tested it again in a cool air-conditioned room and I can't see it now.  Anyways, it hasn't gotten any worse so far.  Some seem to be saying it really starts to deteriorate after a couple months, others much sooner, and of course, there's thousands that don't have or haven't recognized any problem at all with their LGs.  The color rendition on my screen is awesome. I hope this problem doesn't get worse.  It will be interesting to find out what actually is the root of the problem.  It matters to me only to the degree it effects the ultimate resolution.  Right now I'm happy, the slight IR I have does not effect my photo work or any other.  I guess we all stay tuned.  Sounds like Apple is trying to dial it in though.

Is the Samsung an IPS or PVS tech?  IPS tends to have more IR, but also more accurate color.

Yikes, that sounds eerily like Apple code for a way for them to justify saying "uh, no sir, I don't see anything wrong with the display, and it passed our test"

I'll get over my disapointment of not being able to buy this defective notebook but I feel for you guys that have bought one lost the the display lottery.

Still I hope they pull all the lg notebooks soon so I can buy a samsung unit before I run out of time and need to buy an alternative.

It's heat realated of the top LID.  I ran test mutiple times and can confirm that if you blast your air conditioner on the top LID and run the IR test you'll see less IR or none at all.

So you think it is related to the temperature of the screen? Warmer will be better?

    Thanks.

So very light IR when particular situation is acceptable?

I think I should have another desktop display to compare when I go to Apple store next time.

Guys, I found this on Apple Support. It seems that Apple does have a 'special note' for such problem. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

Perhaps this is the reason why Apple is not bothered to reply here, which is poor customer service on their part unfortunately as well.

I quote from the link above:

"In-plane switching (IPS) technology is used in today's most advanced displays, including the Apple Cinema and Thunderbolt Displays, as well as the displays built in to the iMac and Macbook Pro with Retina display."

"On an IPS display, when an image such as a login window is left on screen for a long period of time, you may temporarily see a faint remnant of the image even after a new image replaces it. This is referred to as "persistence," "image retention," or "ghosting." This is normal behavior for an IPS display, and the faint image will disappear over time."

It's just that the severity of the IR problem was not mentioned in said link above, which is unfair to users.

    What do you think?

Maybe they added Macbook Pro Retina three days ago so that they won't serve for the problem from now on?

Your Honor, what we have here are two distinct and different versions of the rMBP made by Apple, Inc. and this statement is based on Apple, Inc.'s own internal data obtained lawfully through discovery.

Customers around the world, by the thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, have purchased this magnificient machine expecting a TRUE retina experience.

However, the reason we are here today is that there is a flaw in this rMBP but NOT this one. On the one hand, we have customers who own what is known as the LG IPS display rMBP and on the other hand, we have customers who own the Samsung PLS display rMBP.

Our contention is that the LG IPS display is in fact, INFERIOR, in every possible way when compared to the Samsung PLS display. The LG IPS panel clearly displays the Image Rentention phenomenon. The Samsung display clearly does not.

We offer as exhibit one, the LG IPS display rMBP.

We offer as exhibit two, the Samsung PLS display rMBP.

We would ask the court to closely examine the the two displays and make a determination for the satisfaction of the peoples around the world as to who is getting screwed and who is not?

Why isn't there a real smart attorney out there? Just sayin....

    typos fixed...hopefully....LOL
