Not all LG displays have IR
Incorrect -- ALL LGs have IR!!!!
Read the KB -- come on man, it is an IPS display --> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455
AGAIN ALL LG AH-IPS DISPLAYS WILL EXHIBIT IR -- DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH IT
Previously I was of the opinion that all LGs must have IR - otherwise how do you explain how people here have ended up with multiple replacements ALL showing it.
But there are folks on other retina related posts (for other rMBP problems!) who say they have LGs and no IR... just whatever problem they are on that forum for e.g. colour issues, graphics issues etc
I am now of the opinion that all LGs either have it, or at least HAVE THE POTENTIAL to. While there are people saying they have LGs that are fine, if IR is a 'feature' of IPS displays, then every single LG has the potential to develop it - even if there are screens which seem ok at the moment. What is so confusing to the non-technical layman like myself is the variation we are seeing across all LG screens - some people have bad IR straight out of the box, some develop it over days, others weeks and months, and some are saying theirs are still ok after quite a few weeks. And there doesn't seem to be any trend with when people have bought the rMBP... the later ones did seem to be getting 'better', but IR is still occurring further down the line, and we are still hearing of people getting a August/Sept replacement out of the box which is showing IR straight away.
For these reasons I would not settle for an LG screen - I will only accept a Samsung display, period. If anyone is wondering what to do, my advice is if you are within 14 days return for a full refund and re-order (that is what I did). I was *lucky* enough to get a Samsung last week as my 2nd order (yet I still have a 3rd ordered arriving this week, since I am not happy with a faint mark near the trackpad and the keys aren't feeling as good as they should be - compared to the last one). Sod's law really... I will wait and see if I am lucky enough for another Samsung before I make a decision what to do. But there is definately still a chance of a Samsung screen if you're willing to play the lottery for a while. I think it's the only way you are going to get one, other than going to a shop and unboxings several as some people have been allowed to do. I have a gut feeling that Apple aren't going to be any more helpful than saying IR is to be expected with IPS... blah blah.... And I wonder if having an LG screen to start with means you can only have an LG SCREEN replacement (different connectors or something?), since I've not heard of anyone who had just the screen replaced getting a Samsung replacement... correct me if I'm wrong.
While I wait for my 3rd on to arrive this Thursday, a few comments about the Samsung screen I currently have... While I can't compare it directly to my last LG, the colour and brightness do appear better, especially the latter. I can happily use this a few notches down from full brightness (versus the LG which was always at max). However, the battery life on this one is far worse than the LG I had - I can't believe how quickly it seems to deplete! While I've read that OS X 10.8.2 is supposed to improve this, my last LG had the same OS X (10.8.1) and was better. I wonder if the seemingly brighter Samsung screen is causing extra battery depeletion? But other than the few cosmetic issues I have with the current one (small mark and keys), I am much happier with the Samsung. I don't even bother to look for any signs of IR, whereas with LG it can become a little obsessive from my experience!
If I get an LG on Thursday I am probably going to keep this one... I can live with a tiny cosmetic mark and slightly different feel to the keys more than I want to live in fear of developing bad IR. I simply don't have the patience to order a 4th, and 5th and so on. I just want to have one I can call mine and actually start enjoying, instead of wondering if it is going back again in 14 days!
Good luck to you all
