Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    Indeed

Just sick of the people basically saying that we are complaining about nothing and to shut up and live with it!

I don't think there's any relation between the screen manufacturer in your original machine and its replacement. When I first had (non screen related) issues with my rMBP with an LG screen I went through three replacements and all were Samsungs. I then went for a refund and tried my luck at two local Apple retail stores and all three I've been through from the stores have had LG displays with image retention issues, and one of them also had quite bad colour uniformity.

I was refering to having the screen replaced, not a whole new machine... it sounds as if you had an LG machine, then 3 different Samsung machines. I don't think there are any people who've had just the screen replaced and ended up with a Samsung screen, from an initial LG screen. But I may be wrong.

What was wrong with your 3 Samsungs?

Ah ok. I guess it's possible. There's probably no technical reason that would prevent replacing an LG display with a Samsung display, I think the most likely reason for this is that when people send Apple hardware back some of it is resold in the refurb store, some of it is sent to the Genius Bars to use as replacements, and others are broken down into their constituent parts for Genius Bar repairs, and probably the Genius Bars are just flooded with returned LG displays right now.

EDIT: Oh and my three Samsungs, they had some uniformity issues. They all had a yellow hue either on the left or right hand side. With the benefit of hindsight I should have just kept one of those and been happy knowing that it really is impossible to make a completely uniform display, but it certainly is possible to make an IR-free display.

Many of those people that are saying that it's nothing or to deal with this whole ordeal all are either ones that Apple loves as customers or who knows they may even work for Apple.  I constantly question whether or not some of the people that post on this forum discussion as well as on others if Apple has any kind of influence over or if their own employees are posting on there.  It's a conspiracy theory, but you never know. At this point I wouldn't be surprised by anything.

Usually, these people either have an IR free samsung machine, or are ignorant rMBP LG owners.. Kinda said really. I think we all have the right to complain about this issue since we all payed 2000+ for these machines.. Thank god Macrumors.com gave some renewed attention..

    NEXT MOVE..

    (looking at you apple)

I think that, in light of other comments here, it's not only how long you've had the rMBP, but also how long, in a single day, you've used your machine before running the test.

If it's really an issue of temperature, then a rMBP having run for hours before you test it for image retention would exhibit said retention more drammatically than one having just been powered on, intuitively, right ?

I will test such claim tomorrow, i.e., I will run the test upon booting, then I will run it again after hours of intensive work.

And I'll try with the ambient room temp at the coolest (i.e., right next to my AC), and at the warmest.

I see loads of images of the burn in on a grey background.

Are there any examples of it for example, whilst using a normal programme?

I would like to see how severe it is during normal use - I never use my computer with a complete grey screen.

    Simple, Jon P D,

fire up Safari, and iPhoto, for example. The former has a 'generally' white background, depending if you're reading the news on the web, for instance. The latter has a rather dark GUI.

Read for a few minutes (say, 10-15) from Google News, New York Times, BBC News, anything with a pale/white background, then switch to iPhoto's interface. Change the view from Events to Photos.

If you have an LG screen and it's more than a few days old, you should now have the amazing feature of seeing your Safari search bar info and mulitple windows + text entries from your previous reading experience showing through the dark grey parts of iPhoto!

A new feature, surely, not a defect...

Sadly, if you get a Samsung, you will *not* benefit from this amazing feature of IPS panels, since Samsung makes puny PLS panels, which are not only preposterousy brighter at the same power consumption, they also cost less than IPS to make...

How dare Apple advertise that it sells IPS displays on retina MBPs, when in fact they also sell some using the 'mediocre' PLS displays from Samsung ?!

    /sarcasm

My replacement (#2 of 2 total, including the original) LG panel was installed last Saturday a week ago (08 Sep); it displays IR after 5 minutes of using Safari on the default Mountain Lion background.

Going in for the lottery exchange this Thursday.

I've been following this forum for a few weeks now....kept up since page 80 or so (went back and read every post). I wanted to share my experience I just had a half hour ago at one of the NYC apple stores (don't want to get anyone in trouble, so just leaving it at that). I have a MBP mid-late 2007....the screen, according to the genius i just talked to, has some sort of 'short' in it and the only two options is replace or use an external monitor....That was the only 'short term' solution....which just avoids the problem all together, doesn't fix it.....So this got me into my concerns with the rMBP....

I first asked the genius if 'Ripley' existed and if they could look up the components by serial number....He nodded and said that he hadn't heard of them using Ripley to do that specifically, but it was most likely doable....So it DOES exist, for those of you who have had Apple Store staff tell you otherwise.

So he tells me he has to check w/ his manager if this would be doable....I have a friend who is an Apple employee and was going to get me his massive discount...which I came to find (and just FYI for anyone doing this) there is a legal agreement when they make the purchase that you can't return or refund it...just repair....EVEN IF THE SCREEN IS BROKEN they will make you get it repaired instead of swapping out a new machine.

Besides the point....The manager came over and I told him my dilemma because I'm a motion graphics artist and cannot afford to gamble on a faulty LG screen. I referenced this forum and told him about how the screens were being made by both LG and Samsung....he says this is normal that Apple uses multiple suppliers. Why would they use two screens with different technologies? This is the interesting part...he was EXTREMELY ademant that Apple is legally bound to provide rMBP's with IPS technology screens. He said "That's what they advertise and are legally bound to".....So I tell him that this post references the PLS displays from Samsung and he tells me 'I don't follow things like that on the internet....Unless it's from Apple's site..." blah blah blah. So if Apple's legally bound to be selling IPS screens and yet the Samsung ones really ARE PLS screens, seems like they're breaking their own agreement....

He did tell me, however, that if I were to buy one of the in store models and the genius would look up the serials on Ripley (apparently the geniuses are the ones w/ access to it....probably the top manager as well) that he would be totally fine with that....that while they can pick from a "limited subset of machines", as long as it wasn't a built-to-order one, it's doable.

So now the predicament is does one spend $3k+ on an awesome machine with a Samsung display (but can't use the 25% off employee discount), or, as he also suggested, get a REGULAR MBP and just add an SSD because "It's basically the same performance w/o the screen...."

Bottom line, I'm going to keep following this thread until we figure something out. The 2007 laptop is dying on me....like two years ago dying on me....it's in a zombie state.

If anyone has found some legal documentation of Apple specifying that they will ONLY be using IPS technology, please let us know! Clearly the PLS Samsung displays would be against Apple's own agreement and could lead to this problem being made public and escalated.

Thanks for all of the feedback along the way....hopefully everyone's issues get worked out!

I stopped by the Genius Bar today and showed the image retention on my MBPro.  He asked 'in back' about it - and was told someone else has been by with this issue.

They said an update would be coming out to address the issue...  I'm a little wary about that...

But they sent an 'escalation' to the Apple engineers about it.

If I don't see something to fix it soon - I'll go back.

After reading around a bit I have noticed that in addition to the LG IR issues, that some people who have gotten Samsungs have ended up with random dead pixels, or pixel clusters. My 4th LG screen has IR but its better then the last 3, so I think I am just going to wait. This really seems like something deeper, and I don't want to go out and finally get a Samsung and it end up having a screen with a bunch of dead pixels.

So with regards to heat.  It's possible it does have an effect.  After using my computer all day, but in a nicely airconditioned office, I tried to produce IR with a 3333 level grey, the color I've gotten the most IR when testing.  Put up a checkboard type image and left it there for 15 min., and could barely see it, had to look hard.  Now when I did this at home last Sat when it was 99-100 deg. F I got more visible IR, that went away when switching to light. grey, but persisted if I switched back to dark grey. You could plainly see it though it didn't "bleed through" other images on top of it.  It did not show up in a desktop picture or all black screen..  Anyways you had to try to induce it to see it, and could only see it in dark grey.  So since the trend with most seems to be that the screen seems to deteriorate once the IR appears as if some process is in effect and takes time to appear.  So far, I haven't seen that happeing curretly to my sample.   It hasn't gotten worse and temp. does seem to effect it.  Will definately keeping an eye on this.  So far the screen is quite good and presented no real problems for the photo processing in Aperture and CS5, in fact, especially in Aperture, it is quite a nice working experience.  The other plus of this screen is its much less reflective than the "glossy" screens of the non-retina MBP's.
