Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Stefano, that is a very good result.  If it does not deteriorate from there, I'd say you got an excellent screen.  My MBPr was ordered the day they came out, and delivered a couple of weeks later.  It has an LG display.  If I display a checkerboard pattern for a couple of minutes, the ghost appears on my gray background for about 15 minutes, even if I briefly flash a few random photographic images on the screen during that time to try to wash it out.

It's too bad, because aside from that problem, the display seems to be flawless.  I called today about it, and I would have to send my machine in and be without one for a while to get this one fixed.  I can't afford to be without my machine, so I guess I'll have to live with it.  IMO, Apple should swap these things out.  I'd gladly take a "refurbished" model that matched this one, sans ghosting issues.

Has anyone ordered a brand new rMBP recently? I wan't to know whether it came with a Samsung or an LG panel.

I wonder whether I can tell the Apple sales person that I wan't the Samsung panel, if I order mine by phone.

If anyone has found some legal documentation of Apple specifying that they will ONLY be using IPS technology, please let us know! Clearly the PLS Samsung displays would be against Apple's own agreement and could lead to this problem being made public and escalated.

That's a very interesting point. Especially when you look at the tech specs page on Apple website and it does state:

Retina display : 15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology

Yes I got my replacement unit today and stumbled upon this thread by chance.  My previous unit was an LG diplay and this one is a samsung.  I never had any ghosting problems with my LG display tho.  I returned my unit and got a brand new one (ordered my rMBP on release day BTW) because when I would wake the machine up from sleep (both on 10.7 and 10.8) the screen would wake up, the machine would wake up (like webpages would still reload automatically icons would change if i plugged the power in), but the keyboard and trackpad would be frozen (but the keyboard would light up) and also randomly a screw on the bottom just fell out.  The freezing happened at least daily and could only be fixed by powering it down.

Today, I finally received a Samsung display with my week 37 rMBP!

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM23510226F49HBD

    C02JC5CNDKQ5

    Made 9-10-12

    2.7/16/768 BTO configuration

Serial number theory is that the 5th character may possibly indicate whether Samsung vs LG.

For example, C02JCXXXXXXX (Samsung) vs C02J6XXXXXXX (LG).

    In 5th character position, Letter=Samsung vs. Number=LG.

Can someone confirm their Samsung display rMBP serial number has a letter in the 5th character position?

Alternatively, does anyone have a LG display with a letter in the 5th character position?

My 5th character is a 'D' and I have a Samsung but my last unit also had a letter at the 5th character but it was an LG

My 3 LGs had 5, 7 and 8 (ordered by purchase date).

With that being said, the Serial number is too short to be able to contain component level details. There might be an indirect indication there, like assembly plant A gets LGs vs. plant B that gets Samsungs. But I doubt the supplier fits in there.

Called Apple today. First let me go through P-RAM reset, SMC reset, try different user acount and safe boot to determine it is a hardware failure. I understand procedures... But ofcourse it is a hardware failure.

The first thing they knew to tell is, that this is "normal" for IPS behavior. Which I think it truth till a certain extend. What worries me though is that it is getting worse every day.

I will be called back later today most likely I am getting a replacement.

Last but not least, I asked for a Samsung screen but she told me (obvious) there is no way anyone at Apple can control the manufacture which components to use.

    I keep you informed.

I am not unhappy about Apple's customer service so far and they really try their best. I think if you compare to any other product you would't be helped this good.

follow up. I get a replacement.

Interesting to know I got a casenumber with as case "Issue: Image Persistence /Ghosting" Means Apple does (still) see it as a defect, which it is ofcourse.

I keep you up to date. Customer service has bin very nice and good to me and is first class in my opinion.

You have a very good point masterfish. I figured too, they advertise with IPS, so somehow they are forced to use LG panels. The sad truth is. "IPS" is a commercial good marketing name, that is associated with quality screens. Despite S-PLS (speculation) is superior. Advertising woth S-PLS won't be as effective as advertising with IPS, since the mass never heard about S-PLS. Therfore I think the rMBP will always have mainly LG screens, and only Samsungs to back up. Myself I design electronics for commercial manufactures, and one thing you can be sure of, Marketing above everything.

I have nothing against the LG IPS screen, as long they can fix this ghosting problem. At least in a matter that it doesn't show up after just 5 minutes.

I've been waiting to replace my 2010 15" MBP with a retina to see what comes out of all of this mess.

I don't do art or graphics, well very little.  I do web page programming and embedded programming so I'm often running VMWare Fusion, BBEdit, etc.  So I'm not sure hte ghosting will bother me too much but like all of you I'd rather not spend $3400 on a defect product.

So that leads me to this question... I see that some of you are on 3, 4 or more replacements.  How are you guys getting anything done?  I mean while VMWare fusion can quickly be installed and I can copy over a VM in 10 or 15 minutes it does take me significant time to install all the other apps I need and use.

So what are you guys doing?  Are you installing everything then migrating it?   It would seem like a ton of work is being lost by these replacements.  Not knocking any of you as I'd do the same but I'm really curious how you are all getting along?

SuperDuper by Shirt-Pocket (paid app), or Carbon Copy Cloner (free). Both create bootable clones of the hard drive. With the rMBP's USB 3.0 port, I was able to literally copy about 80-90 GB that is my completely setup system in around 30-minutes. These applications will also do differential backups so once the first clone is complete, keeping that copy up-to-date is very fast and easy.

My work is the same: a lot of backend web programming. I use several VMs along with Coda and Pixelmator when I need to do some graphics. I can't say it's a huge distraction, but it is noticable depending on the background. For instance, my Coda window is almost always burned into the display these days. I do think, however, for the price of these systems the display should function better.

Ah ya... I should have figured SuperDuper.  I use that too.  Did you find that you needed to get a 3.0 USB HD to take advantage of the clone speed?  I find with my older machine doing SuperDuper (512gb SSD) seems to still take quite a while.

I guess the more I think about it and in looking at my current windows on this laptop I RARELY if ever am in a situation where I've had a window on screen then I go to just the background.  I almost always have another window below it.

So that begs the question if if the burn in of a white (for example) window over another white window would be noticable?

I too feel that this is one of those things that really should just work right.

    Hi guys

Could someone please let me know wether I should install the new update from apple with the Samsung display or wait ? I haven't installed the new update fearing that apple might have injected some kind of firmware that would decrease the preformance of the samsung panel .   could someone or some people please confirm if its ok or not ?

    much appricated

Are you are referring to the SMC update for Retina? I installed this update and noticed a very small decrease in brightness on a Samsung panel. Maybe It's just me ;o) but I would suggest if it ain't broke don't fix it! SMC update is mainly intented for people wanting the Power Nap feature, other than that kindof pointless to install.
