Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    You seem really unlucky, only a few people on this thread have had dead pixels whatsoever, and you have 3 screen pixel problems PLUS IMAGE RETENTION.

    I would return it and order online, it seems your store may be just ordering the ones that get returned .

    I think it is not a problem to be lucky or unlucky. With 4 different problems on 4 different MBPr (the very espensive professional laptop) I think it is a general building issue. Probably the LG retina displays are not good and we're the Apple Beta testers.

    The Apple Store Genius says my only option is to send this defective rMBP back before I get a replacement, which could take 1-2 weeks. I can't really be without a computer that long. I don't understand why they can't ship a replacement to the store and just have me swap it out once it arrives. On the phone with AppleCare support now to see if they can do anything else. :-(

    that's exactly what I encountered. But thankfully I have other computers I can use.

    If they are telling you that you need to send in your rMBP before they will send a replacement, make sure they are actually sending a replacement and not just replacing the screen on your existing unit and then sending it back.

    I say that because after I got one advance replacement unit that had the same problem (and also had the LG screen), I was told my only options were to have the screen replaced at the Apple Store, send it to them (not advance replacemet) so they could replace the screen (with no assurances I'd get a good screen), or as a special consideration they would let me return it and get my money back even though I was outside of the 14-day return window (though I had reported the issue while within the 14-day window).

    They also said they would be posting a public Tech Note on the issue in the near future, but they were still figuring out what it was going to say and needed to get approval over the wording before it could be posted.

    Well Dang It...  I have had no issue and even tested for ghosting, then today all of a sudden I noticed Ghosting on my display.  I ran the terminal command and sure enough I have the LG.  Looks like its time for a replacement.  Only had this system a little more then two weeks and already a issue that I have to return it for.  My last few purchases from Apple have not gone so well.  Getting a little frustrated with the quality I have recieved lately.

    Well this is what makes me worry about IR. I haven't got my answer yet. Is it possible to not having an IR problem and have it after a while or not?!

    Well I have mine fora few weeks and never had the issue. I tried a few different tests I found online to check for the ghosting and I was never able to produce it.  Today I had Microsoft Outlook open on my main screen while I doing work on my second monitor I was running off my macbook.  Outlook was open for nearly 30 minutes or so on the main screen.  I needed to RDP into a Server and when I brought up the RDP session for a Windows 2008 host it has a solid blue screen.  I immediately notice the ghosting of my outlook mailbox on the solid blue background.  I have been doing similar tasks daily since I bought this new MBPR and never had this issue.  Now it does it everytime.  I dont know if this is just the first time I noticed, but I did do a lot of testing and was never able to produce the ghosting so I think it just started.  That is about 3 weeks after purchase.  Needless to say I am not very happy.

    Oh my god! Of course you're not happy. I have Samsung screen and no IS but I'm not happy either. I'm worried that I could notice it after a while.

    Thanks for reply.

    can anybody with a samsung panel confirm to have IR?

    to check which manufacture you have, just open up terminal and enter the following command:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    if the display id starts with

    LPXXXX = LG

    LSNXXXX = Samsung

    Hi guys,

    Just thought I'd post my experience thusfar since this thread has been pretty helpful in learning the specifics of the issue.

    I ordered my rMBP back on the release day and had image retention issues. Just got around to following it up today at the local Apple Store a month later, where I was told that as it was a custom model (base model +8gb RAM) they wouldn't be able to give me a replacement on the spot. The genius bar guy filed the fact that he could see the issue against my serial number (I had a test image pre-burned when I arrived ).

    Phoned the online store today and after being put on hold for about 20 minutes, got the all-ok to have a replacement organised. When I said this was my primary machine, they allowed me to keep it until the replacement arrives (not sure if this is a per-case kind of thing or not).

    Interestingly, I could also replicate the issue on all six of the in-store display models (Perth, Western Australia).

    Replacement rMBP is being processed and ships in 5-7 days. Meantime I get to hold on to this one until the new one arrives. I was told my a customer service representative that Apple is aware of the IR problem and the policy is to build and ship new machines, allow the customer to keep the current one for the time being, and once the new one arrives ship the faulty unit back. Apple pays for all shipping as well. Additionally, replacement rMBP orders are bumped to the top of the order queue and get priority.

    I went to the Apple Store last night to confirm the IR I was seeing. They suggested I call AppleCare over the phone because they would be able to replace the unit faster. I got off the phone with AppleCare around 8:30 P.M. and was emailed a return label this morning at 9:17. The new rMBP replacement also shows up in my web orders now.

    My replacement is on the way.

    Can you give me details of what you told AppleCare?

    I actually returned mine and ordered a new one, which is slower than your supposedly 5-7 days.

    I want to make sure I know what to tell AppleCare if this one also has problems!
