Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

The one thing that Apple could do that would make life a lot easier for people that want the Samsung is allow people to specifically request a Samsung display if they are getting a replacement.

That would probably completely mitigate the issue. For those of us experiencing IR, simply putting a Samsung display in the unit would make a world of difference to us. I could see once supply lines become more populated that Apple offers this as a potential solution. But who knows if/when that would happen, it could be days, weeks, or months away.

Guys, my retina Macbook from Week 28 shows signs of IR within a few minutes.

My friend just got his last week, also an LG display. I ran several tests on his machine and could not find a single trace of IR.

Can this really be that only a small poulation of displays are affected? i.e. that includes only the few of us who are visiting this thread and adding to it?

My 3rd rMBP just arrived - 2 days early, I was shocked to see UPS on my drive!

    BTO 2.6/16/512

    Build week 38 (September)

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM235502HRF49HBD

    Samsung display

And for those questioning the 5th letter/number of the serial numbers I have had:

LG - CO2J6... Bad screen IR

Samsung - CO2J9... Great screen but cosmetic issues on machine

Samsung - CO2JD... Hopefully great screen AND appears to be a perfect body!

So I don't think you can tell the screen from the serial number alone. The Ripley system they use will be linked to a huge database which lists the component parts for each serial number. We have no way of knowing that.

I really hope this is it for me now! And it definately suggests there are plenty of Samsungs still being shipped... I've been lucky enough to have 2 out of 3 - if only the 2nd didn't have a little mark on the body I would have been happy with that one. Dam Quality Control.

    Don't give up hope yet!!!!

p.s. I am in the UK and ordered BTO so shipped direct from factory for all 3.

Apple won't do that. They are completely denying the fact that Samsungs do not have persistence. If they admit it's just LG, then it's game over for them.

Nope. It could take a while until it shows up and depends on usage and environment too. We've had people who got a "perfect" LG in July and are just now noticing increasingly worse image persistence.

I know they can't admit to that and specifically give you a Samsung, but to be honest I don't know why they don't just do it without telling the customer! They must be getting a lot of LG returns, so I can imagine they would save money by making sure everyone who returns an LG with IR gets a Samsung replacement. They don't have to tell the customer they are doing that - it was just 'lucky' wasn't it! They are relying on the fact that the majority of LG owners won't notice or take issue with the IR problem - but once someone HAS noticed the issue and wants a replacement, they are obviously going to keep on going until they get the Samsung they deserve. Apple could make this a **** of a lot easier for both ends by making sure that people like Dr Sly (8 LGs now I believe!) just get a Samsung outright, saving multiple shipments and returns of more LGs.

I'm not saying Apple would admit LG's are inferior. They wouldn't do that, it would be too damaging to LG as well as its relationship with Apple. (In fact, I don't know that LG's are inferior.) But they might say something like, "Fine, you people with IR think Samsung displays are better, here, take one." Just like they said, "Signal attentuation is not a problem with the iPhone, but you think a bumper fixes it? Here, take one."

I would say it's a strong possibilty otherwise it would be a substantially move visible issue in the media, etc. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean our concern isn't valid, just not as widespread as it feels.

I just got off the phone with AppleCare - and the rep (after talking with a senior rep) said they just updated a known issue today regarding image retention in document HTI455.  He said to go back to the Apple Store and reference that number - that they have a way to test it and a resolution to the problem.

    Guess I'm making another appointment.

Is that document for internal use only or is it something we can access?

    Thanks.

    I think it's this one:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

It's basically saying set up a screensaver. It's the same as old article of similar topic, this time with Retina MBP added to list of affected products.
