Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I see. In that case it might not have shown up online or it's internal

    I tried this query:

For whomever is interested, yesterday I received my BTO (from apple web site store) 2.6/16/512 MBP15R.

    Ordered:

    - Friday 9/7 about 11pm USA Eastern Time**, the first and only panel lottery ticket I bought.

    Result:

    - LSN154YL01001  (---> looks like it's a Samsung)

    - DLM235400EPF49GBU

    - 5th alphanumeric of MBP15R's serial # is D (in case anybody thinks that matters)

    - chipmunk.nl reports this as production week 37 (September)

    - appleserialnumberinfo.com reports it as production week 38 (September), and the production unit # within that week was 50-something.

I looked but have not been able to find any problems with this MBP15R.  No noticable IR/IP on my dark gray background (I've had it for about a day), though I haven't deliberately hammered it with challenges.  No off-color glows on the screen.  No dead or stuck-on pixels seen.

The panel is not as bright as I imagined from what other people have said -- I have to keep it set for max brightness or just a notch below.  I shifted the color balance temperature down about 1% (e.g., about 50-60 out of something like 5000-6000) to make it a little more natural white instead of slightly blue/flourescent feeling.

Also no creaky sounds, and no scrapes, dents, or smudges.

The only complaint I can come up with is that I'm not keen on the slightly pinkish-purple hue to the apple logo on the backside, but I'll probably cover that with a Windows logo anyway to keep "apple pickers" away.  ;-)

So, I'm very happy to say that I won't have to repeatedly play the panel lottery & make lots of returns & re-buys, at least not yet.  After following this discussion for a couple of months, all 215 pages and 3200 replies so far, I hope you'll forgive me if I don't continue to spend hours each week following this discussion.  ;-)

    Best luck to you!

    Craig

*FWIW, I picked that moment because on a gamble that they'd might have seen a rush of back-to-school/college orders and I wanted to order when their factory production needed to dig deeper into their supply of panels.  And although the web page indicated there wasn't any delay, as I ordered it it said there'd be something like a 2 day delay, so I think implemented my strategy correctly.  That effort probably didn't really make any difference, but I'm happy with how it turned out anyway.

Update:  I dropped my rMBP off at the Apple store on Saturday for a replacement screen install and got the email today (Monday) to pick it up!  It was estimated that it would be complete by Thursday so that's the first plus. Second:  I got a Samsung screen! LSN154YL01001.  My original screen was LP154WT1-SJA1.  So it is possible to get a Samsung from a screen replacement.  My computer is a BTO 2.3/16/256.  I don't know if I got lucky or if over the weekend they decided to start ramping up Samsun replacements.

For anyone that doesn't want to go back and read my other 2 posts, basically I called Apple about a week ago describing the image persistence and after some back and forth I kindly asked to set up a repair, set up an appointment with KOP Apple store since I would be in the area that day, set up a 2nd appointment with the Park City Apple store (didn't have any issues with KOP, I just wasn't going to drive all the way back out to pick up from them) and had the replacement screen ordered on Saturday, computer ready for pick up today (Monday.)

I didn't have any issues at all w/ Apple employees save for the phone support which seemed more like he was trying to get around admitting an issue with the screen itself.  The store Geniuses were exceptional throughout the entire journey.   Good luck to those that are still on the fence or waiting for replacements.  I'm attaching a screen shot of the UPC sticker that was affixed to my new screen as well.  edit: sorry about the photo orientation.

Well done. It would seem things are looking up. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll have some happier campers.

Hello everyone might as well jump in the bandwagon.

I have a LG based screen off a freshly shipped rMBP, I bought mine from BestBuy at a bargain and even had it financed.

Needless to say the machine is perfect, but yesterday after doing the famous checkered test, I discovered I also had the ghost image issue. Now I'm starting to notice the ghosting issue without even trying to replicate the problem.

Now I still have the 14 day money back offer, which I can use but I'm thinking it's no point in getting a new one if chances are it'll be LG again....

I also need to use it a lot as I bought for University,,,I don't know what to do I'm stuck in between and honestly after using I don't want to go back to windows again.

All I hope is they officially acknowledge the issue and fix it so that I can have it replaced or repaired rather than going over and over several different models.

This isn't going to happen.  Apple has already stated that this is "normal".   If you already have screen retention issue and it is already bothering you then you should take it back now before your 14 days are up.  As has been mentioned numerous times here the LG screens tend to get worse over time with regard to image retention.

I got my 8th MBPr yesterday after having like 4-5 LG's in a row. And it's a Samsung. No IR. Screen seems perfect. Didn't check for dead pixels but so far seems good. The lid has 3-4 light scratches though All else is perfect. I guess I will have to keep it since the IR issue is far worse. I got it last monday and it's a week 36... so Samsung is still used. Good luck people!

    Going OT here,,,

But can Apple replace it directly or should I go to to BestBuy?

This is really frustrating as the Apple Store is pretty far and I'd have to take the metro plus bus which easily takes up a 1 hour of commuting...

Not to mention I have a full semester of classes.

After the 14 days, they will only repair it?

I'm sure that's what they will offer after the 14 days are up first. Try to get it swapped within the first 14 days to be on the safe side.

    CHECK THIS OUT!

I found some articles about the difference between the two displays....Not sure if this helps in the case that they are advertising the two screens as IPS displays when, in fact, they are different technologies being falsely presented as the same...

    http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1343998103

"The 15.4-inch panel that comes from LG.Display is called LP154WT1 and is an AH-IPS panel. Later reports have confirmed that Samsung is in the mix as well with a panel called LSN154YL01001. Samsung does not produce IPS panels but produces a variant called PLS."

    http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?subaction=showfull&id=1291980086

"...after Apple’s decision to incorporate IPS technology into iPhone 4, iPod, and iPad...Samsung has developed a new LCD panel technology based on the popular IPS panel technology. Samsung's new IPS variant is called Super PLS (plane to line switching)."

So I think we're clear that in contrast to what employees are telling us consumers, the two displays are NOT both IPS and are NOT the same. Again, the manager I spoke with at a NYC Apple store yesterday reiterated multiple times that the screens were both IPS, Apple says they're both IPS on their site, that is what is promised with the rMBP and that is what they are "LEGALLY BOUND BY".

The scratches are put on there to let the man cloaked in black at the end of the assembly line know that this unit is using a Samsung display.

Yeah... it's like they are saying so you wanted a Samsung screen, right? Then live with scratches!

Yeah, it seems as if they are moving towards Samsung screens. I've notived 4 new MBPr at the Apple store and 2 of them where Samsung ones. Also I can confirm that there's no yellow tint as compared to LG. Also colors look more saturated. Last LG screen was strange. It couldn't show solid colors. Every solid color looked almost sprayed (like sand). Very strange. Samsung seems more white and at least 2 bars brighter. Two weeks ago the specialist and the manager at the store refused to comment on the issue stating that's it's OK. This week the specialist that helped me told me straight up, that IR is not acceptable. He told me like 10 times that he totally understands my issues with LG.

Apple will replace it within 14 days but if the purchase was from Best Buy you have 30 days to return it for a refund or exchange it. 60 days if you are a silver Reward Zone member
