Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Take a survey and I'm sure 99% will prefer a few scratches than a defected screen.

    I know I would

Naturally we all expect the best as we payed a lot of money.

Yeah. I've had 4-5 LGs (stopped counting) all had IR. None hat it on day one. All had it after 7-10 days. I've seen about 6 LGs at the Apple Store and all of them had severe IR. At another store only 1 LG -> IR. So far 100% of LGs I've seen had IR. Some more severe than others, but all visible.

But can Apple replace it directly or should I go to to BestBuy?

This is really frustrating as the Apple Store is pretty far and I'd have to take the metro plus bus which easily takes up a 1 hour of commuting...

Not to mention I have a full semester of classes.

After the 14 days, they will only repair it?

If you bought it from Best Buy, then return it to Best Buy.  IMO, Best Buy is always the best bet,  unless you don't have one, or unless you need a BTO.  You get 30 days, instead of 14, and they are a lot less likely to give you a hard time if you show them the image retention, because they're not in on all the ways in which Apple is trying to skirt around the issue.  Take it home, give it 20 or so days, then return it for another.  Keep going until you get one that you like.  I would avoid the Apple store, unless you've no choice.

Again, Best Buy = 30 days.  45 days if you have their silver reward zone card.  It should say on your receipt when you have to return by.

Apple will replace it within 14 days but if the purchase was from Best Buy you have 30 days to return it for a refund or exchange it. 60 days if you are a silver Reward Zone member

Sweet, but if more people post they're getting Samsung displays, I'll make a move right away.

Yeah, you're right! It's just cosmetic. If it wasn't for the IR issue with LG screens I would have definately returned this one because of the scratches but it's either that or be prepared for something worse Also strange. Last machine I had (#7) had a displaced lid. it was like 1-2 mm off to the right and front. When closed you could feeld the edges were not aligned. Out of 8 machines I had 6 had a squeaky bottom. This one doesn't. Last LG was very different from all I had. IR was there but not as severe as the machines before. But it could show solid colors... they all apread sprayed if I looked closely. I've never seen this before. It almost seemed as if Apple tried a solution to fix IR buy displaying slightly different color tones for nearby pixels.

I wasn't happy with my 2nd replacement which had a perfect samsung screen, but a mark/scratch right by the trackpad. I took a gamble and re-ordered one more time and I now have 2 samsungs sitting on my desk! Though obviously the scratched one is now going back in favour of the 3rd one. If this one had been an LG I would have kept the 2nd one though. Yes I would rather have lived with a small mark than deal with the screen issues for sure, but I still don't think anyone should have to accept scratches/dents on a £2000 laptop!

Don't give up hope folks, looks like their may be an increase in samsungs being produced at the moment, so maybe a good time to give it a try.

    Good luck!

My Bestbuy store originally had no rMBPs, I was lucky enough that the employee told me that they were going to get a shipment in a few hours from my visit, so I waited and then was even luckier that only one had arrived and that it was reserved for me.

I think all the LG displays will take time to flush out of the warehouse of various stores, Apple will most likely have the "freshest" stock available.

Yup.  When I was looking at getting one, they didn't have them.  I think that they do now.  Last time I was in the local BB, I checked just for fun, and they had six of them.

That's why I said get one, and then wait 20 days before getting another.  It gives them a chance to catch up if you get one every 20 or 25 days.  I just think that BB's return policy is way too good to pass up.  Apple may have the freshest stock, but it's just anecdotal that it actually means anything.  I've been following this thread since post #1, and there's been all sorts of posts with people saying that they think that there are finally more Samsungs coming into the supply chain, only to be followed by 20 posts with people saying that they just received LG screens.  It all just seems like a crapshoot.  Might as well give yourself as long as possible to try before exchanging for another.   That's how I dealt with the screen issues on the new iPad.  I went through a ton of those before hitting on one that didn't have screen flaws.  Of course I ended up getting mine at Target, and that's not an option for Macbooks of any kind.

You are right on that, might as well consider it.

The only issue is that there's no way to tell if it's LG or Samsung out of the box...

I doubt any manager will have to patience to allow me to open each box infront of them and then discard it if it's LG and has the IR, eventually they will tell me to get a refund.

I don't know, I hate playing this game of roulette, I don't have that much time.

A part of me says live with it, as I know this issue will only proabably vanish with the future rMBPs. Or if I'm lucky to get the samsung display one.

Just got my rMBP , it's got the LG panel and the ghosts that come with it:((

No return policies im my country so i'll wait hoping they will fix the problem and then replace my screen under warranty.

Really don't think it's fare to sell 2 different products with totaly different quality under the same name:(

Biggest problem with rMBP so far is the retina display:((

Just don't understand how they didn't check the quality before putting the rMBP on the market, if you put one with lg and one with samsung next to each other the difference is obvious. I think they should of used just samsung even if the waiting time would of been 1 month for each unit.

Ok - I think I missed a digit in that number the AppleCare rep gave me...  Ugh...

I went in and they ran a test on my MBPro that had a checkerboard on the screen for 3 minutes and then black for 1 minute.  Now - in the last 10 seconds, my screen dimmed in preparation to sleep the monitor - and I don't know if that had an effect on the test - but we could not see the pattern on the black screen after the minute.

I feel like it is worse than that, in general - but my computer passed their 'test'.  Not sure what to do...
