Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Warning about Best Buy.  They have changed their return policy in the past month. I am a reward zone silver premier member, and I had to have a manager override a return.  I returned an open box Mac Air after finding out that the unit wasn't cleaned like the salesman said it was via their Geek Squad.  I had previously returned a couple of items due to bad sales advise, always with a sales receipt.  They now have a third party evaluating their returns, "The Retail Equation"  Ph# 888-224-1920.  If you return too many items or a high cost item (?) laptop within a pre-determined amount of days, Best Buy will freeze any returns for 90 days!!! That will spoil the 2nd return of a rMBP; involving a managers override, and rolling of the dice?  Their protocal is to have customers call the 888 number, and then I was told they didn't understand why Best Buy placed a freeze on returns. I was lucky that the manager saw this as a bad policy and gave me an override.  But, now because of their new policy, I am very reluctant to buy anything else from Best Buy, they can place a freeze on a return at anytime. Sadly, I think they are a slow sinking ship, and they are trying anything to prevent returns.

I am also waiting to see the out come of these issues with the rMBP.  I am waiting to purchase a rMBP, MBP, and an Air in the very near future.  I will now only purchase through Apple direct, with their Apple Care.

The difference is probably temperature. We've seen how it makes retention more pronounced, somebody (Dr Sly?) posted the readings on that. Apple Store is well AC'd and your machine wasn't running long enough.

Here's my recommendation: Go to Apple store at least half an hour ahead of your appointment. Use the machine to "heat it up". Something heavy on processing.

In fact try this for yourself at the store before making an appointment to make sure you can reproduce it just like what happens at home.

    Sedona,

Than can track your returns "BECAUSE" your a rewards customer.  It allows them to track your purchases and returns.  They cannot do it with someone walking in off the street.  And/or using a different CC for purchases.  IMO, dump the rewards, you gain nothing - they gain everything...

Of the people posting in this thread, how many have significant prior experience with ips monitors?

I know image persistance is a problem on a lot of ips monitors, my question is do you think that it is substantially worse on this model specifically?

I've read a lotof this thread, but it's hard for me to tell who has prior experience

The way these LGs are going, I expect the ghosts to start materializing outside the screen very soon. Make sure to turn off the laptop overnight.

Alright, thanks everyone for making me feel better! lol...I'm no longer dreading the receipt of my latest brand new rMBP in a couple of days. It looks like getting a Samsung screen may be a good thing.

The better screen wins, however. The 300MHz faster CPU and the additional 8GB of RAM do not supersede the importance of a flawless display!

No. They scan your driver's license each time you return anything. Played the game with them to get a Samsung Retina 4 times. I lost it the 4 times and got 90 days freeze on returns

Yes, I have quite a bit of experience with IPS. In fact, I was remarked by how Phil Schiller seemed to almost forget to mention the fact that "the amazing new Retina display had IPS, too, with the great viewing angles". Sort of "By the way". lol...IPS is something I had been waiting for years and years to come to the MacBook lineup and if the only difference between last year's screen and "the new MBP" had been the addition of IPS, I would have almost been equally as excited as I was, and am, about the Retina display.

Before I switched to Macs, I was a BIG fan of IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad's, which used to have the so-called Flexview displays, which was their marketing term for IPS. I still have my T60p with an AFFS (Advanced Fragfield Shielding) S-IPS panel (Super IPS), of which there are only very few in existence. The following year, IPS was dropped from their lineup, as the entire industry turned to cheap TN panels.

Apple is actually the reason that companies like ASUS all of a sudden carry IPS monitors and laptops. This is one aspect where I do not mind the rest of the industry to copy Apple.

In any case, you are NOT supposed to see *ANY* ghosting of ANY kind. No "imagine retention". No color problems. No KIDDING. And if you need to turn it off during the night so as not to experience screen issues, you have a bad unit and it needs to go back where it came from. And pronto.

I almost forgot: Even if you didn't pay for Expedited shipping, you will receive the highest form of getting you your next MBP! Don't ask either. Tell whoever does your case that that's what needs to happen. (politely, no cursing, no abusing the person on the other end of the line. Be assertive is what I mean by that.)

For what it's worth - let me add my (fortunate) result in the Samsung /LG lottery.

I got a Samsung yesterday (on my 2nd order - returned the first LG)! No aparent problems with this screen - cosmetic, or display-wise, and the the screen does seem very bright. Needless to say, no IR. Am a very relieved guy right now.

First order was placed on Aug 21 - BTO 2.6/16/256 - Received a week 34 build with an LG screen. Sent it back on the 6th day, for a full refund.

Second order was placed on Sep 10 - BTO 2.6/16/256 - Received a week 38 (37 according to chipmunk) build with a Samsung!

It would be too quick a conclusion to say that Apple seems to be supplying a majority of Samsung's these days, but at least they are still building them into new machines. For all of you waiting on yours, don't lose hope! Gotta feel for the likes of Dr Sly though, who haven't been as lucky as me.

The iMacs use IPS monitors.  I've used them since 2006 and currently using a mid 2010 model.  Never had IR with any of them.  I do have light IR with my 2 1/2 week old rMBP. It hasn't gotten worse then when it first appeared.
