Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

The Samsung panels are reportedly PLS panels, which is a display technology "based on IPS". Who knows, it may equal IPS in performance or even exceed it. I guess I'll find out in a few hours when yet another rMBP arrives.

One thing you have to admit: Apple doesn't play around when it comes to customer service (unless you let them). 2-4 business days to build turned out to be only 1 day and the shipping time is the fastest I have EVER seen. Shanghai to Los Angeles (by way of Memphis) in ONE DAY! The ETA was just TWO days and sure enough, it looks like they're going to deliver a day early yet again! Incredible. Hopefully, this MBP will have a GREAT screen and nothing else wrong with it.

It's interesting to see that lately most people report getting a Samsung display, especially from week 37 and 38. Is there anybody who has gotten a rMPB with an LG display, made on those weeks?

try appleserialnumberinfo.com - I think it will show as week 38.  All the week 38 laptops I have read about have had Samsung displays.

AJ,  I suggest taking a couple pictures at home when you notice the IR.   I've been burned in the past for not being able to replicate an issue while in the store so I made sure to have some kind of proof this time.  Sure enough, while in the store I didn't have IR and I even used the computer for a half hour before my appt. and no luck, but having the pictures I was able to show the genius who agreed that that was an issue.

can be that somehow the LG factory was off that week ;-) and laptops from week 39 will have LGs again, but I hope not.

I'm a bit concerned about mine, which is arriving here tomorrow. Mine is week 36 according to Chipmunk...

Dropped mine off yesterday and confronted them about the whole LG vs Samsung thing and they knew all about it...They assured me (and then showed me the part) that the new screen was indeed built by samsung. I pick it up today so we shall see

I just finished reading a review of a Samsung 27" 2560x1440 PLS monitor, which concludes that PLS outperformed IPS panels in brightness, black levels, and viewing angles, albeit not by much. For what it's worth, it sounds as though PLS panels are certainly not worse than IPS ones, if you believe that review to be accurate.

I'm stunned at the fact that Apple has sent me another MBP in record time! 1 day! From Shanghai to Memphis to L.A. Shipping date is yesterday and it's about to be thrown on the truck for delivery, before 10:30am no less!!! Wow!

Needless to say I will post my findings and all the other specs you guys are interested in later on today. Wouldn't it be SUCH an awesome thing if that darn rMBP could have a perfect screen with no other problems either??? Even though I'm preparing myself for the worst case scenario, I will still be heartbroken if I have to return this one as well!

Best Buy does track returns by scanning your license or other form of ID every time you return anything.  They've been doing this for a couple of years now.  It's not a new policy.  But I've never had a problem.  I bought and returned seven iPads in a 2 month period, and they didn't stop me from returning any of them.  I bought two MBAs from them a couple of months ago, and returned one of them because of a dead pixel.  No problem.  Of course the rMBP is a lot more expensive than an iPad, and $1000 more expensive than the MBA that I returned.

My understanding is that they will not actually deny you a return.  Instead, they take the return, and then let you know that you are blocked from returning anything else during the following 90 days.  I don't think that they can actually deny you a return before letting you know that you are blocked.  YMMV though.  I certainly wouldn't want to see anyone get stuck with a crap rMBP.

But even if the magic number is 4 of these things before you're blocked, if you buy and return one every 25 days, that's 100 days.  I would think that if Apple is really going to work all of this out, they'd definitely have it worked out in the next 3+ months.  I think that it beats the whole ordering, waiting on shipping, receiving the products, being disappointed, return shipping, and reordering thing.

As far as Apple Store vs. Best Buy, well it's just a case of "pick your poison".  Best Buy's return policy is pretty crappy, and has lost them a lot of customers.  But I've seen all sorts of stories in this thread about how Apple Store customers have been mistreated, about how Apple has gone out of their way to minimize and/or deny the issue, and how the "geniuses" are just plain clueless.  Any retail mega corp has bad policies and mistreats their customers in the name of making a profit.  It's all part of the cost of doing business.

Just got mine (week 38 on appleserialnumberinfo) and I'm glad it's a Samsung.

The rMBP itself isn't without flaws, though: it has a small dent on the bottom and a scratch on the 'N' button. I'll call Apple Care about these issues . . .

Now I'm going to check the display for mura, dead/stuck pixels, etc.
