Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

just went to the apple store. they now have a test where they display a chessboard image (black and white) and leave it for 3minites. then a balck screen comes up and if the re is nothing apparent on the black screen, they say the machine is fine....

i showed them the pictures i took,  but they werent convinced.

very disappointed with apple... hoping for a replacement or a fix for everyone with an LG ddisplay!

im tiered of calling and going all the way to an apple store....

what bothers me the most is that its like a lotery. we all pay the same price, and its pure luck whether u get a good screen or not.

Hi everyone - first time poster here, i'm posting a message here as i was going to purchase one of these earlier in the week then i seen the article on Mac Rumors about the issues, i ended up here and the rest was history...

It seems like a lot of the BTO ones are coming out with Samsungs so maybe it's best to order one they have to build but that could just wishful thinking i guess..

Also i feel like a bit of an idiot but what is all this talk about week numbers and apple serial numbers, if you order one how do you check these sorts of the details?

    Thanks

That's good news (mostly). What build number is it in that week?

After more than 3,200 replies, over more than 200 pages, it still amazes me that some people are trying to draw patterns to assess the probability of getting a Samsung display from:

    - production week

    - built (BTO or stock)

    - if it's a full replacement or repair

    - from Apple Store, education store, Best Buy

    - serial numbers with letters or numbers here and there

    - "last few commenters got Samsung, so I might get one"...

Folks, this is no better than numerology... If you really believe in this rubbish, you will not be very happy campers in the rMBP lottery.

Face it, all such claims have been disproved many times over, so stop it with all that rubbish. You either get a Samsung, a LG, or a AUO display. Likelihoods ? They 'appear' to be skewed towards LG displays, with the image retention issue.

Of course, having just said that, the assessment is already heavily biased, because anyone with a properly functioning rMBP + Samsung display is *not* going to find out about this thread and *not* going to post on here. It's like a hospital, you seldom find people who are not sick at the hospital, right...

So for the few of us who have been reading/writing about this from day 1, tell the newbies how it is. It is NOT POSSIBLE to predict whether you are going to get a Samsung or LG display.

Lets just hope that apple releases a solution, because right now they have a bunch of unhappy customers. Nothing can be done now. Apple HAS AN OFFICIAL TEST. Your IR has to be pretty bad in order for them to act. i.e. 3months+ usage...

I wonder what the situation would be like if Steve Jobs was around...

Just because you've been burnt, doesn't mean everyone else has to pipe down in your presence. It's perfectly feasible Apple have switched to Samsung displays while the Lg issue is investigated.

Slightly off topic, but wanted to report on the samsung (3rd rMBP) I got yesterday...

All seems great with the screen, but the charger kinda blew up after a couple of hours of use ... loud popping sound, a weird smell and even some black residue on one corner! I was quite alarmed! And it wasn't a power surge, since it was plugged into a special adapter socket with surge protection - my tv was plugged in too and on at the time with no issues. When I unplugged it the white brick was insanely hot though.

Luckily the computer is fine, and I was able to swap the charger with the one from my 2nd rMBP order, which is still waiting to go back. But still, I am rather alarmed by all these issues with Apple at the moment... if it's not one thing it seems to be another...!

There was a Chinese reporter who went undercover @ Foxconn and said the conditions were horrible and many workers were rebelling by taking out their frustration on the products made there. Interesting article not sure how well it translates though...

So I am waiting for Samsung rMBPs to start showing up on Ebay for double the price

You have zero evidence to support your claim. Quit it with the attitude. You don't know what you're talking about. I merely presented facts, and you come back with... nothing?

Better be silent, than not to contribute to this already long thread.

I'm no going to argue, people seem happy enough to reply to provide the information. I trawled through all of this, many other websites and I'm interested in the subject at hand. No harm done.
