Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I just purchased a MBP Retina with the LG screen.

Should I return it before my 14 days?

I heard that screen issues can happen after 14 days.

    Thanks

Don't be silly Dr Sly! The guy on the assembly line can predict which display is going to be installed.

Seriously though people, it's all about supply. Whichever panel is available when the machine is being assembled is the one it gets. There's no magic formula or pixie dust.

    frocco,

please test it once in a while (every day, 2 days, 3 days) until close to your end period for returns. It is really worth not only testing it to see if indeed it has an image retention issue or not, and to see how it develops over time too.

My most recent rMBP developed very mild IR on day 3 (almost unnoticeable), then a bit more on days 5-onward.

My previous rMBP with three different displays (I had two repairs) were terrible, they exhibited IR on day 1.

What is the test you are speaking of?

I came in late to this thread.

I've got a rMBP just 2 weeks ago. A Samsung! Perfect. Though I came across this thread and was shocked. Can it be true, that so many customers get a flawed product. So, went to the Apple Store today. They had some rMBP's on display. I checked, and found out, all of them being LG's. I could reproduce IR on every single one of them. And not only that...the screen brightness was singnificantly lower than on my Samsung screen. On my MacBook I'm always am on max. 75%. Other than that it is just too bright and would blind me.

What does Apple do there? Producing two qualities of displays and hoping, people just take it? I don't understand, what is going on here.

Even though, my thing is really stunning, I'm p*****! What will be it, when I'm getting the next Apple-thing?

Actually yea, it's called six sigma. Apple has their own methods for manufacturing too. This defect should not have slipped through the cracks. Definitely not for a company like Apple -- this is their entire song and dance. Ever see their videos? Keynotes? They are so impressed with themselves over build quality and this is the exact opposite of everything they preach. That's what has me so incredibly shocked. I'm even more shocked that they haven't issued a recall by now as well.

So while it's not possible to predict which screen you'll get...The bad screens should have never been in production in the first place...So it is possible to predict that you will get a good one regardless the make on it.

In fact, I'll go so far to say that we may be whitnessing Apple's peak/decline. If they can't rectify this issue and the iPhone 5 doesn't end up going so well (because they missed on several opportunities and released a device with hardware that really existed when they released the iPhone 4s) then this could be a turning point for Apple. They MUST rectify the issue with the rMBP's and they must have a good reception with the iPhone 5. In fact, I imagine part of why they haven't addressed the IR issue with the rMBP is because they were focusing hard on the new iOS their new maps (which I also think will be a miss - at first, it'll take too long for them to get it up to par) and the iPhone 5. I really hope now that after the iPhone 5 is released they can seriously put some more effort into their laptop line here. Maybe I'm wrong, but this feels like an extremely dangerous time for Apple. If not a turning point, certainly a big hit for the company (which they can afford of course). To be frank, I just switched from a PC and I have a lot of issues with the rMBP. The other day HDMI out wasn't working, I had to restart the machine. Sometimes when you unplug the power adapter and wake the computer up from sleep, the screen doesn't turn on (try it - unplug before waking up then hit a key). So I'm not impressed here. The premium price is fine IF they deliver and Apple simply is not delivering right now...Not at all...Not with anything. Something happened to them. Something bad. End rant.

Actually, my-user..., I agree with everything you said.

It's just that I meant that 'we' cannot predict what panel we'll get. What Apple does with its supply chain is, of course, embarrassing enough...

That's not what I was even talking about in the post you quoted. Yes, obviously this issue should not have slipped through. I was being facetious when I made the comment to Dr Sly.

Exactly what I was saying when I agreed with Dr Sly who made a similar comment.

Stopped reading at this point. Really? Missed it with the iPhone 5? They sold TWO MILLION in 24-hours. What other company has done that?

So folks, brand new rMBP from today:

    - it's another LG (week 36)

    - it looks a bit pinkish like my current rMBP

    - I will test for image retention shortly, and after a load (make it a bit warmer)

    - I am returning my current/previous rMBP tomorrow (LG, week 34, IR), since it will be day 13

    - cloning the new one overnight, I need a machine to work on in the meantime, after all...

    - If this one develops IR, will return in a week or two of course.

Bravo, Apple, let the refurb games begin ! So many opened packages, so much time and money wasted...

Oh blah, we live in the same city. This means majority of the rMBPs are LG ones over here....

My retention issue has gotten more visible. But I'm hesitant to make constant trips back and forth for if it's LG as let's face it, LG screwed up big time.

So? That doesn't mean it's a good product. We all bought flawed retina MBPs as well.

My point is if they continue to ship and sell (the more they sell the WORSE actually) bad products...Or products that don't live up to their old standards... Then buyer confidence will go down.

That doesn't mean iPhone 5 will not sell like hot cakes...That means iPhone 6 will not sell as well as it could or should.

Let's put that another way. If tomorrow they came out with a retina Macbook Air. Without first addressing the IR problem. How likely would you be to buy it?
