Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Let's put that another way. If tomorrow they came out with a retina Macbook Air. Without first addressing the IR problem. How likely would you be to buy it?

Okay. I don't disagree. I just think it premature to make statements like that.

Hmmm, I'll just give it a shot and call Apple. From where I live Pointe Claire Apple store seems to be the nearest.

    I'll update any progress soon.

Yea, perhaps...again my opinion of course, but I think it in the realm of possibility. I mean you know the banks were too big to fail too =) My point/rant was purely in hopes that Apple would consider the possibility when choosing to give us things like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

...Instead of a simple, honest, "We're sorry but we have a solution." Or "We're working on a solution." ...No one would fault them for having a defect. They got some bad screens from another vendor. You know, it happens. Especially with new technology. The world knows that, but what I can (and what people I think will) fault them for is trying to pretend like it isn't an issue and just leaving many of us with lemons. That's something a shady company does and our only recourse as consumers is the BBB? LOL. Yea...Like that'll help.

Calling Apple won't solve anything, plus they can't tell you whether it's a Samsung or a LG rMBP before you buy one and open one...

So it *is* like a lottery! Except you waste a lot of time and money, and they end up with a lot of opened boxes (refurb ahoy!).

Of course, one has to wonder what happens once you return a rMBP with a LG display which exhibits IR... Repackage and sell in another Apple Store?

    I just saw that too,

That is sarcasm at it's worst.

I know plus they just labeled it as a natural occurence in the display rather than a defect. So hearing that over the phone would really make me ****** off, even more than I am now.

I didn't buy from Apple directly so a no questions asked refund isn't possible for me. I'd hate to part with it so might as well live with it.

Apologies? Never gonna happen. Not from Steve Jobs (never ever happened), not from Tim Cook, not from Mitt Romney ;-)

This is a 'corporate culture' issue.

Anyways, they pretty much told you/us with those two recent 'tech notes' that it's not an issue, it's a 'feature' of IPS panels. Which is as close to a lie as using rhetorics is, of course, since 1- while it is an issue with curren AH-IPS panels from LG, 2- many other IPS panels do not exhibit image retention.

My Apple Cinema Display is IPS, not a single trace of image retention appears on it, it's two years old, and I leave it on with Caffeine (screen saver blocker) for minutes to hours at a time. No ghosting.

So 'some' IPS might have IR issues? Yes. Inherent to IPS technology? Effin' no. That's rubbish.

I want a PLS from Samsung anyways, bottom line. They are superior in many ways (brightness, energy efficiency, lower production costs ! ), and I am going to get one, some time.

I will return my previous 4K $ CAD machine tomorrow and maybe ask for a new one right away. Doesn't really matter, I have another new LG rMBP /sarcasm

So folks, brand new rMBP from today:

    - it's another LG (week 36)

    - it looks a bit pinkish like my current rMBP

    - I will test for image retention shortly, and after a load (make it a bit warmer)

    - I am returning my current/previous rMBP tomorrow (LG, week 34, IR), since it will be day 13

    - cloning the new one overnight, I need a machine to work on in the meantime, after all...

    - If this one develops IR, will return in a week or two of course.

Bravo, Apple, let the refurb games begin ! So many opened packages, so much time and money wasted...

Same story here. My fourth one just arrived today. LG, week 38. Tested for image retention, and it still has it. Spotted it the same day.

Cloning my current one, returning it, and ordering #5 now.

Edit: It's BTO (ram upgrade only) and week 38, so there goes 2 of the theories being talked about on the last few pages.

Sorry to hear that. What build number? They must be loading batches in at a time, if my manufacturing engineering experience still rings true.

I am on my 5th.  Week 37.  Waiting for what I think will be week 38 or week 39 ready to be shipped shortly.  All have been LG with image retention so far.

So are you guys just ordering from apple, a new machine then returning the LG machine so at any one time you have 2 charges from apple on your card?

Yea, this is pretty pathetic that we're literally swapping out so many machines. Where do they all go? Wouldn't it just be cheaper for Apple at this point to fix the problem? I sure hope these aren't all going to refurb... Heh, evil evil.
