Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I'm pretty sure that they can't legally rebox them and sell them as new.  I mean you are paying for a new product.  So it's into the refurb chain they go.  I've always wondered about that.  These are all returned with the IR as the reason.  Does Apple consider this to even be a flaw?  Maybe they ignore it, and sell them as refurbs without any further repairs...

i'm starting to lose count now this has gone on for so long. Well over two months of nonsense now. I think i'm on the 5th replacement or is it my 6th coming.... Still waiting for it to ship, but i made it clear to the ER dealing with me, any faults its going straight back- their repsonse - no, we wont change anymore for you. Only a refund (which is no use to me at all) you can go to a store and just buy one from there til you get one that "meets your expectations".

After two months of this ****, they really think im going to go around from store to store to get one that isnt defective?! Madness. It's wasted enough of my time already. The IR is a defect, it's why i contacted them, and they're who i expect to deal with the issue until it's resolved for me. The official line is still "being looked into" and they wouldnt tell me anymore than that. But given the industry i am in, i wont be accpeintg any of their crap till i get the top end, fault free product i have bought into - as it is advertised - "The best laptop we've ever made". About time they proved it to me!

My 5th 2.6/16/512 should arrive soon, so hopefully my next post will be a positive one.

This isn't going anywhere to the solution at all...

I'll check mine ASAP, but too lazy for now Just by reading all posts here make me too lazy to check....

Disappointed with this company as I am really loyal customers.

I can't think more of what to say.

Here my voice to Apple's officer reading this. "I demand Apple Inc. to make official announcement and whatsoever to at least keep their customers with them"

Act like we do have some value to you please we purchase with expectation of your highest level of precision in manufacturing and all QC products is a must! Hope you do something real soon.

All those billions and STILL Apple refuses to do the RIGHT THING.

Yup, this is as shameful as anything any other company has ever done to their loyal customers.

The whole transparent weasel move of creating a sneaky pointless test, (which I predicted would happen) in order to blow people off, is worse than some of the shameful things I've seen some companies do over the years.

The whole "this is normal for ips" is a weasel move also. If it were normal then all ips screens, including ips screen put out by you Apple, would look as bad as these LG rMBP's. Stop treating your loyal customers like stupid punks Apple. They're loyal to a fault but you shouldn't be taking advantage of this.

This from the richest company in the world? Shocking.

The really sad thing is that this isn't the only issue on rMBP at this time.

I'm also very mad about the battery life; in the specifications and on that big event they said 7 hours, on my LG(yes i got the IR issue) rMBP i get only 4 hours from just surfing the web:(( Screwed 2 times, once with manufacturing the device and second with the software(seems like it's a ML problem and the update still didn't fix anything)

I got this rMBP just a few days ago.

Maybe they will try to fix all these problems after the iPhone 5 buzz is over

    So I'm returning both:

    - the LG week 34 (my second rMBP, pinkish, slight IR on day 3, more IR on day 5+, age 12 days), and

    - the LG week 36 (third rMBP, yellowish aka jaundiced, slight IR on day 1 ! age not even 1 day)...

Returning the first one tomorrow (Thursday) because the 14 days period ends Friday, and that's iPhone 5 madness day...

Might return the third one later, since I do need a computer. I will try to buy a new one tomorrow on the spot, after having returned the second one. I should really, really test it in-store, instead of testing all that stuff at home :-(

I want a Samsung dammit ! I've seen four so far, and they were amazing. Just demos, alas.

I think it's a shame about this whole thing really. I hope I get a samsung panel.

It also ***** because, in theory, the lg ah-ips panels should be better. I mean they should give you more accurate vibrant colors. But it looks like with the extreme ir they're showing, it's not worth it

I have easily gotten 7-hours of life on my rMBP. I know 10.8.0 introduced some issues with battery life, 10.8.1 made it better and I heard through various rumour blogs, etc. that 10.8.2 fixes the battery issue completely.

You should make sure you're on 10.8.2. If you still have issues, charge it to 100%, let it run down to 0%, then recharge it completely. If that doesn't fix it, you need to take the unit back; something could be wrong.

I just noticed some Image retention on my brand new macbook pro retina. I powered it off and back on and the ghosting was not permanent. Possibly heat related as someone said earlier.  It's only a week old. Should I return it to the store for a full exchange and hope for a samsung model?

I also disabled the automatic brightness control and that seems to help.

This is my first Macbook and so far I love the thing. But the screen is a pretty important part of the laptop. I cannot afford to ship the laptop off as I need it for school.

Hopefully I can just get a replacement.

    sigh.
