Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Bottom line: If you're not completely satisfied, take it back. Theses computers are a lot of money and no one should have to be less than satisfied with them.

Yeah, I'm actually kind of ****** off right now.  As a broke college student 2500 bucks is a lot of money spent on this thing.

I would hope that Apple goes out of their way to make this right.

I'll be heading to the applestore first thing in the morning demanding a replacement.

Alright, so I got my Retina MBP BTO this morning and the other one is already back at the store. I have a Samsung panel and I agree with anthony6555 that it is a shame that the AH-IPS panel from LG IS BETTER than the Samsung PLS, or is it!?? I realize that this is a subjective question, but please read on...

I didn't have any problems with the LG IPS panel and I was actually hoping for another LG display, but apparently, Samsung is what you get these days, because of whatever inconsistency the LG panels are suffering from.

Having said that, the Samsung actually does get as bright as the LG screen that I had or maybe just a hair less. Doesn't matter to me, as it is plenty bright. I'd still prefer a (fully working) LG IPS display... I THINK!?

Therefore, I would like to ask those of you who HAD an LG display and who NOW HAVE one from Samsung: Am I imagining this or do the Samsung screens have deeper blacks, better black levels, and/or better contrast ratio???

I want to say that I THINK I'm noticing slightly better blacks. Some photos made for this hi-res screen seem to look even better than on the LG that I had. I still think the super bright white of IPS rules all displays out there and LG always had a good reputation. I'm just tired of this back and forth, so I chose to keep the one that arrived today. The Samsung display is pretty stunning and if I had never experienced the LG IPS display, I would not be in this forum complaining. I am definitely interested in hearing from you guys about the possibly better black levels with the Samsung screen.

I have a week 35 MBPr made by Quanta with a LG screen and it has a very noticeable burn-in. I really need this computer or else I'd try to return it for another one but then if I get another LG screen I'm back to square one.

Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged the problem? What will they do?

My guess is that there will be an update to try to hide this problem because I can't see them exchanging every LCD that has the problem. Maybe they'll just exchange the ones that clients complain.

MacMan, Be happy you have a Sammy. As you can see many of the posters here would die to get a Sammy. Enjoy your laptop you finally have a good one! Besides IR I could't found any design flaws so far in the rMBP

First time posting here in this thread.

I've been following the discussion from somewhere around page 80 through to the current and I myself have just this moment received a 2nd replacement.

Like many others on here, all rMBPs I've received have all had LG screens, including the one I've just received. I'm currently testing the newly unboxed one for IR but all previous rMBPs have all had the IR issue. For reference, the spec is CTO 2.6/16/512 and the screen type is LP154WT1-SJA1 with a serial number beginning DCN235

Apple customer service have been excellent in my experience so far, however, they cannot guarantee that a Saumsung screen will be built into any replacement they send me. This isn't through want of trying and Apple customer service have tried in vain to make sure I get a Samsung but they just can't guarantee it as it's out of their control. They have said that they can warrant a 3rd replacement if this one is no good but they want to see pictures of the problem so it can be approved from higher up the management chain.

Having just looked up the serial number of this 2nd replacement, it's a week 38 and number 475 to be built that week. It was built in China according to the info list.

I almost believed the 5th character in the serial number theory until it turned out that some people, including myself, have all had LG screens whether the 5th character is a number or a letter. Again, for reference, the first 2 rMBPs I received had a number but the one I've just received has a letter. I got my hopes up a little when I saw this but alas it's another LG screen so that theory is completely busted. I will say though that when I first turned the computer on, the screen did look much more white with a slight pink hue which looks far better than any rMBP I've received so far. This too got my hopes up that I may have just won the screen lottery but a quick key bashing on terminal well and truly put an end to that.

This one will most likely be going back too along with pictures so I can get a 3rd replacement. Seems like LG still have the lion's share of the screen supplies I'm afraid.

So what is the return process like?

Is it possible to have the store order the replacement, then exchange it at the store? Id rather not be without a computer for weeks. I just had to ship back my other laptop to have the power port fixed.

    le sigh.

So, my new (5th) rMBP arrived and it's a Samsung Finally some luck, however it's not perfect in terms of cosmetics (had dirt on aluminium, even some tiny scratch) and I don't like the trackpad work (a bit too deep), compared to other I had, but those are small things, that even can be probably adjusted.

I noticed also that this little black trim under the screen panel seems to be a bit too loose/flexible. When i touch it I can feel some movement, like it was not fully attached. Anybody also noticed that?

I've been dealing with the online store as it was bought through the education channel and it's a CTO.

Their process is to organise a courier to take the old one back and send you a replacement in the meantime. To ensure I'm not without a computer I make sure the courier doesn't take the old one back before the new one arrives. This also means I can compare both machines before sending one back to Apple.

It's incredibly frustrating that a few more people seem to be getting Samsung screens now than before but still I get lumbered with another LG. To rub salt in the wound, the last Apple rep I spoke to on the phone was 'confident' that this replacement I just received would be free of any issues. I took that to mean that somehow he would ensure that I got a Samsung screen replacement as he did say he would try to ensure that would happen but obviously it didn't and his 'confidence' was very mis-placed.

Sounds like a pain in the butt.

I really hope that maybe I will get lucky and get a samsung right off the bat.

Definitely looks like week 38 hasn't changed then, just a few lucky people.  Mine is very close build number to yours, I will update later today once I've got my hands on it.  I will be interested to see my experience over the next couple of months if it turns out to be LG.
