Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Anyone with LG screen that has NOT turned bad after more than a month of usage? I guess they wouldn't be reading this forum if everything is ok...

    Drphalanges,

from what I have read (and I have been reading around the web on a daily basis from July and onward), "none of the LG displays reported did not develop image retention"... (notice the double negative here)

So, in principle, if there are LG displays which are IR free or will not develop IR (the former is not good evidence, the latter is a conjectue), we haven't really heard about 'em...

On the other hand, Samsung PLS screens, wilst entirely vulnerable to many afflictions such as mura, banding, light leakage, or dead pixels (which affect *all* display anyways), *do not develop image retention at all*...

The argument that all LG displays on rMBPs will develop image retention might be true by virtue (shoud I say vice) of being a 'different' kind of IPS tech than before, i.e., they are apparently AH-IPS, whilst there are plenty of IPS variations out there.

But the fact remains that I have other IPS panels at home (Apple Cinema Display anyone?) and they *never had image retention*. A number of other commenters here had similar experiences.

    Dr Sly,

My first rMBA had a perfect Samsung display. And with perfect I mean littereally perfect! No backligh bleed. (not even the slightest bit) the best black's I've ever seen. Very vivid and and big contrast. Then after 12 days suddenly dead pixels start to appear at the upper left corner.

Second problem was, the middle screws (near the air inlets underneath) where to long, and the bottomplate was sticking out, made the whole laptop flex. So unfortunately it had to go back

    Well,

I just returned from the Apple store here in Tulsa.

I got a new MBPr and it looks to be a Sammy... No dead pixels or light bleed.. crossing my fingers that I'm finished with this ordeal.

I'm really hoping this Samsung display will not have any future problems resulting in craziness to get another IR free screen.

    First Impressions:

With both LG and Samsung screens calibrated I cannot tell difference at all between them. Maybe a bar brighter on the Sammy. I think this is a good thing because I really loved my LG screen, Samsung quality with PLS is there if not better for those wondering. If I were to blind test it the only way I could probably tell the diff btwn the two is by doing the IR test....

Which I did on both and LG failed while Sammy had no IR

And that is with a kuzy case on my Sammy and no case on the LG

Have to say, if I got a second, maybe third one, and it still didnt meet my requirements  -I'd return it get a refund and buy something else. If its not supposed to be, its not supposed to be. Get your money and buy something that will make you happy.

They are an awesome laptop, and I love mine (Sammy build) but even reading these pages makes me edgy (Samsung develop screen dead pixels crap after a few months etc etc). Just maybe try an Air or another brand even. How else will Apple know to change what they are doing. I mean if your getting to a 5th like Ive read some people have.. Not good.

Have to say its big money for these things (for an average person at least).. mine was  $2800 but some people spend up to $4k! Get the right thing that your after, its some serious coin dropped on these metal pieces of joy!

Maybe check it in store once you paid and just return it straight away. Is this an option?

It's an option if you buy a standard configuration rMBP. Many buy BTOs (build to order) and they are shipped from China.

Ok, well then yeah I would stick with my original comment, if your up to your 3rd laptop or beyond, and your getting new ones shipped from China each time, maybe its time for a switch, or not a BTO so you can change up straight away.

Well I just returned my second rMBP with LG and image retention to the Apple Store.

Good news, if not a bit strange:

I spoke to the cashier while I was returning the rMBP and she mentioned that someone had been in the store the day before and asked for a Samsung equipped rMBP after a number of returns.

Apparently, he managed to have the staff scan the barcodes of the rMBPs in the store and they found him a Samsung !

So I quickly went downstairs and asked a manager on the floor, and he and another employee told me that they could check it out.

Turns out it was too complicated to do on the spot (iPhone craziness tomorrow...), but the manager took my info and will call me next week to get me a Samsung rMBP !

I salute those three employees, very honest and straighforward about the image retention issue, the acknowledgement of Samsung and LG panels not appealing to everyone the same way (a nice way to put it, sounds more appropriate than to say LG naysayers are delusional, for instance), and I look forward to a call next week.

In the meantime, I have a day 2 rMBP with an LG display and some faint IR...
