Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

This is no good. I would call Apple again and ask for a publick relations person and explain your dissatisfaction.

I understand they want to attempt first to repair it, but loosing your computer for 3 weeks, and then getting wrong repairments is just wrong I am sorry man...

Well, just an update It's been 48 hours since I got the new MBPr with the samsung screen.

I have noticed absolutely no flaws in it.

The only difference that I have noticed compared to the LG is the veiwing angles.

On the samsung I do notice a bit of fade when looking at it from hard angles.

    Not even an issue.

Also the manager at the apple store offered me a 25 dollar itunes giftcard for my troubles.

I feel like crying really hard.I have been waiting for this notebook since 2 years cause everybody out there were buzzing that the new MacBook would be ground breaking.i kept on accumulating money for this very thing and since I m a student and live in a nation where there aren't any apple stores,I thought of buying myself one when I went to the My dad.nd when I came back I got to know about this mammoth discussion forum with many dissatisfied souls like me,who paid as much as I did.Money is something extremely hard to earn, one gets to know its value when oneself earns it and 2000 dollars odd aren't a small amount.Plzzzzzzz apple I beg u,plzzzz fix my display somehow.I can't even get a refund or return my notebook since there aren't any apple stores here plus I m out of my 14 day NQA return policy as well.I m going into depression and exasperation as days are passing.Plzzzzzz fix it apple plsssssss.I have trusted ur corporation since long and I still vest my faith in you.Pleasssss please ;((((.cant stop shedding tears.

As dramatic as it sounds, I noticed today (back working on my Macbook Air 11") that the 11" MBA display is basicly better then any of the rMBP's I have seen.

Of course (and obvious) the rMBP looks better and sharper, simply due the fact it has more pixels and is Retina. But then we talk bout pixels and not bout the quality of the Pixels.

My MBA with (AU display) has no dead pixels, a very even backlight and no IR. Very equally distributed whites. Non of the complaints I've seen in the rMBP's. Addmitted, the vieuwing angels are much better on an IPS pr PLS screen.

I found my AU displayed MBA to be pretty dull compared to my Samsung based MBA.  I returned the AU to end up with a hazzy and washed out LG...but thats another thread

Went in yesterday to exchange the screen for a Samsung.

    Nope.

IR test 'within spec'. Won't exchange yet, so I have to wait for the problem to get worse before we'll go through the lottery again.

Seriously considering returning it via the credit card company. Other than the screen, the machine is brilliant. But on a computer costing 3 grand, IR should not be an issue. As in, 'it should not be present at all'.

Here's what I typed in the survey reply form / feedback page a minute ago.

    ---

I came in to note image retention on my LG screen, for a Retina MacBook Pro. This is the second screen; it was replaced from the original almost 2 weeks ago. There is still image retention on my screen, and based on what I have seen online, with the previous screen, and even with the display models in both the Vancouver Pacific Mall and Toronto Eaton Centre Apple stores, this problem will only get worse.

When I made the first appointment 2 weeks ago I specifically requested installation of a Samsung screen. I received another LG.

When I made the second appointment for yesterday's visit, again, I specifically requested a Samsung screen. I find it difficult to believe your staff does not have the inventory control system in place to find out which replacement screens are supplied to customers, and I find it stunning that Apple would have the outright cheek to suggest that I should just live with IR on a $3000 computer, when there are examples online of persistent customers requesting and receiving Samsung replacement displays that do not exhibit image retention.

I will keep pursuing a Samsung replacement screen for this Retina Mac, or I will request a refund, if it comes to that. I am very disappointed that Apple has gone to the trouble of generating SOP documents, a separate IR test, and extensive staff debriefing for this issue when the resolution -- supplying a specific screen source -- would result in less goodwill lost, less time wasted, and happier customers.

Not impressed at all with the company's actions in this regard.

    Thanks

    northtwilight

I've had a change of heart having slept on the issue. My 2.6/16/256 Samsung which arrived yesterday was dented and I was going to get it repaired.  I have now decided to get it replaced - I don't think anyone should have to put up with a dented laptop on arrival.

Very disappointing.  I now have to play the game again for another perfect display etc.

I would consider asking them about what the repair is.. It might be a replacement of just a housing and that's fine.  These retinas are not really fixable.  So you might be better off hanging onto the screen

Secondly, I bet someone here would buy it from you - the secondary Samsung Apple market starts with you!

    northtwilight,

I had the exact same experiance at the apple store with my retina LG display. I took the laptop in 3 weeks ago and they replaced the screen no questions asked. At that point the genius bar didn't have the checkboard test and they saw the issue with their actual eyeballs and agreed that it needed replaced. Of course, it was replaced with a LG sceen. After 2-3 weeks the issue came back just as bad as it was before. I took it back into the apple store 2 days ago and now with the checker board test shows it is "within spec". My question would be "within spec" to what? Within spec to LG or Samsung. I have not read one post where the Samsung screens have any IR issue.

On the test that they run, they use a very dark gray/almost black background (web safe=#1F1F1F). You CANNOT see the IR issue on a dark gray or black ground. The color is too saturated and the image is not apparent. If you view the issue on a lighter gray background (say web safe = #666666) it is EXTREMELY visiable. I wonder why they chose the dark gray/black background for their test? With this current test, all IR issues with be "within spec". Absolutly 100% ridiculous. I truly do not see how apple can get away with this. This needs to be deemed a recall issue and all LG monitors need to be replaced, hands down.

Has anyone failed the "within spec" checkerboard test at the genius bar?

The other crazy part about this is the fact that I ran the terminal command monitor check on the retina floor models at the local apple store. Both were Samsung. Coincidence? Not sure. Anyone else check their local apple store?

The local apple store has offered to accept my retina as a return after the 14 days. Question is, do I order another and hope for a Samsung? Or, do I return and go back to my old Mac Book Pro.

As customers of Apple, we truely do not need to accept this and should stand together to fight the issue. How do we do this?

Is unacceptable to be two different quality displays for the same product, and such an expensive one that is also advertised for its display.

It's like 50% from the customers get the product they payed for and the rest get screwed. And the official response is that "it's normal".

I trully wonder if they'll continue putting LG displays in the next years and keep saying that it's normal.

Interesting that apple just removed the post that mentioned "lit1gation". Worried?
