Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    @ tivoboy,

Your hand has been forced by apple the only half way inteligent thing for you to do in your situation is absolutely return it. You know they'll tell you it's normal if you wait so respect yourself as they won't show you any with that nonsense test they're doing now.

After having decided to forget about the whole thing of buying a rMBP I'm now considering going in October during my week off to buy one, check it for the samsung display, if it's LG I return it right away. No thinking about it, no waiting for what I know will come. I'll return it that day or the next. I may or may not ask to see another but I'll probably run for the hills as something smells fishy lately with Apple and I'll take it as my warning to not become a first time Apple customer.

OK, I've been taking a closer look at my rMBP with it's new Samsung screen.

First, it does seem a bit brighter than the LG, but not by much.

Second, it seems like text is a bit crisper.

Third, the viewing angle is not as good as the LG, but that must be a PLS versus IPS thing. Either way, I could care less about that as long as I don't have any IR.

I'm just running a 60 minute test for IR. I'll let you know if I see any, but I doubt I will.

No dead pixels, not mura, and no light bleed that I can see...so far.

    No IR.

Ugh. So tonight my replacement rMBP started really showing IR. I had seen it a bit over the past week or so, but now it's really pretty glaring. Still not as bad as the one it replaced, but I'm sure it's progressing in that direction. Just in the nick of time; Monday my 14 day window on this one runs out. I'm really not sure if I should replace it, hoping for a Samsung screen with no other problems... or what? I really can't believe this is Apple... I've been such a big fan since switching six years ago (I know a lot of people on this forum have been Apple users for decades). I hate to see them going down this road.

By the way, I'm not sure how to contact people on this support thread, but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for you to contact me. So, if "Dr. Sly" and/or "Dave Z" could drop me a line, that would be great. I'd like to discuss something with you both.

    Hello Canuck,

I'm pretty easy to find on the web: google 'Sylvain cognitive science', I'm the first few results...

Sorry for the delay in replying - phoned the credit card company, they will accept the computer if it comes to it, which I am determined not to do. This thing is a brilliant computer otherwise, they should make it right. So - I will just take it back again once the IR damage is severe enough.

At the rate it's going, it'll be another couple of weeks. My Safari now has burned a solid grey-ish bar across the top of the Mountain Lion galaxy background. I also warned the guy - what happens if it's beyond this in terms of damage? Do you take it back then? At which point he said, yes, they would.

That URL for the display test 24 hours later does not even seem to work anymore. Are you kidding me?

Unbelievable. This is totally souring me on Apple products.

Guys, have to say, if you are within your 14 days, and your screen is showing ANY IR issues, take it back for a swap or refund. At first In felt bad for Apple, but seriously they make a lot of money (See HIGH PROFTS) and they should give us the right thing. Just look at the list of **** I and everyone else here has bought, we deserve what we are paying for.

I was lucky this time (for once) and got the Samsung, but If I got the LG, I would be refunding and swapping till I got one.

Apple is however in a bad position, as Im sure they dont want to publicly come out and say that their court room enemy, Samsung, is making a better screen than the other guy.

But at $2.5 - 4K.. they need to come out and get this fixed. We are now up to 230 pages of people complaining, petitions and everything else.

Apple, just do the right thing by people and their hard earned money, cause you will be the company that fades away.. not now, but later when a legitimate competitor comes out, people will walk away without the emotional attachment that Apple has been good at building all these years.

but #### what do i know.. Apple is the best.

So after a month and several weeks I attempted the IR test and to my surprise my LG screen displayed IR in a few minutes. I than requested a repair and received another LG that had pinkish tinge issues on a white background and on the following day I demanded another repair. I was in high hopes when I inputted the command in terminal and was excited to see I got a Samsung, however, later in the day after several screen tests I find out I have 2 spots with backlight bleeding on the top edge of my screen. As of now I'm contemplating whether it is really worth it to request another repair but most likely I will since it is quite visible in a bright light condition and is disturbing when watching films with black borders. I have gone through 7 exchanges and 2 repairs and I can conclude this model completely hates me, regardless of screen manufacturer...

From what i read around here, seing how hard it is to get a rMBP with Samsung, at least 3 in 4 rMBP have LG displays, and all have ir

I think this is why Apple won't do a recall; to many rMBP to repair, abour 75% from all sold, to many replacement displays to get from samsung

Can you notice it in normal use? If you can, and it bothers you enough, just return it and get something else.

Getting a samsung is tricky enough
