Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I called apple this morning, I have been told that I must go to the apple store to see a genius. They can do nothing on the phone?

If you're within 14 days from the date they shipped your MPBr or from when you purchased it at an Apple store, you can return or refund with no questions asked. I had to remind the Applecare tech over the phone before he stopped trying to get me to troubleshoot the problem, and I was transfered to customer care right away to set up an exchange.

THX, unfortunately, it's over the 14 days, painful :-(

I will go to Apple store this afternoon, hope can find a solution there.

Yep, same here.  I am over the 14 days as well.  I guess I will find out here in less than 3 hours what they can do for me.

Use the above 2 posts as warnings, RETURN rMBP WITH LG DISPLAYS IMMEDIATELY.

I'm glad I found this thread!  I just ordered a 2.6 / 16 / 512 configuration about a week ago so I haven't gotten it yet.  If it doesn't have a Samsung display I am going to immediately set up a replacement (or 3) until I get one that does.  From all I've read here that's the prudent thing to do.

    Hey guys... just a report.

I've received my MBPr earlier today and I don't see any issue at all with the screen. Whites are white, the contrast isn't an issue and there doesn't seem to be any image retention putting a webpage or something with a bright white background like an email open on the desktop with a solid grey background. I only left it there for ~10 minutes at a time so far however, but it seems OK to me.

Custom 2.6/16/512 and it happens to have an LG screen. I'll be keeping a very close eye on it but so far I don't notice a single flaw and I'm VERY picky. I'll be sure to find one soon if there is one. The clarity and colour balance on this thing is awesome btw. It's annoying going back to my Thunderbolt display in a way - because the colours on it seem a bit 'cold' or blueish compared to the Retina screen.

considering the fact taht this thread and the few others like it are not over flowing with thousands of posts I wouldn't jump out and say ALL LG screens are bad. there is likely a higher fail rate with a specific set of issues but if ALL LG screens were bad this thread would be far longer and with far more people in it. think about how many rmbp are selling. they can't even keep em instock .... it's a whole lot more the the amount of people posting in here.

that said. my rmbp arrives tomorrow. first thing I will do is run the terminal command to see what display I have (hoping for a samsung) but if it's LG I will keep a close eye on it but not jump to conclusions either.

    you may be right.

but lets assume that its 50/50 between samsung screens and LG screens.

and then 50/50 amongst those LG screen owners with half of them not reading about this or not trying to find a problem with the LG screen.

I wouldn't have noticed the IR problem if I didnt test it with leaving my window open for an hour on a grey background.

Again, others have said they have done the IR test in apple shops and all LG screens had the IR problem when tested.

I wouldn't rule out the likely possibility that all LG screens are bad because the problem isn't always an "in your face" problem and it can take a little while to discover it (and there's some anecdotal evidence that it might not start occuring until after a certain amount of usage). For example, if you have a busy wallpaper, it can be much more difficult to notice. And if you have your screensaver/engergy saver settings so that your screen goes dark fairly quickliy, then you might not notice it, But "not noticing the problem" is not the same as "not having the problem".

Based on people that have noticed the problem, they all appear to be having problems with LG screens. And of the people that have noticed the problem and received replacements, all of the LG replacements have also had the problem. That's pretty strong evidence that there is a problem with ALL LG screens...or at least all of those that have been produced from the first runs up to the runs that produced the most recent set of replacements.

Well, I don't know that I'm not going to exchange this one. I do need it to use as well at this point so I'm not exactly wanting to return it if I don't have to. I'm just keeping a close eye on it - and I hate to tell you, but I'm a web developer and have gone through countless LCD panels and I'm telling you: the whites are white on this screen and I have two screens to compare it with.

A dell u2410, and an Apple Thunderbolt display. All IPS panels, and this retina display is actually the best out-of-the-box display of the 3 of them. Not yellow at all. So, perhaps I just got lucky and got a really good one but I'm for sure watching it like a hawk within the 14 day direct exchange period and I will see to it that I have another one ordered and sent out before I exchange this one.

p.s - Apple "hates" me already since I've been through 3 Cinema displays and 3 iPhone 4s, so trust me. I'm picky... I was actually dreading receiving this laptop and not being able to use it right away because of finding another QC issue.

so general consensus is that they do let you hold onto your current rmbp while they ship you a new one though right? I just don't want anymore down time as I have spent enough time just waiting for my first one to get here. hopefully it's not an LG.... but if it is I sure as **** don't wanna have to send mine back, be without my computer for at least another week... then have to reinstall everything. that would really tick me off.
