Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

DO NOT PLAY THE BUY/RETURN 14-DAY LOTTERY HOPING YOU'LL GET A SAMSUNG DISPLAY

It seems, and is almost confirmed, that apple only stocks and ships samsung displays ONLY for repair.

    ...

On what did you base your statement? I got a Samsung display with a BTO order and so did several others...

I think what "metrama" was trying to say is that you could play the LG/Samsung lottery, and you may get a Samsung display, but it's not a sure thing. However, it "is almost confirmed" that if Apple agrees to replace your rMBP's LG display, you will get a Samsung display for sure, because that's all Apple is currently stocking for display replacements due to the IR issue. Again, this is almost confirmed, but not 100% yet. I'm really starting to believe it though, especially after my experience yesterday and that of "northtwilight" (above).

    Yes "Canuck1970".

Heck, I wish it was official, but as far as I'm aware, apple hasn't "officially" announced or confirmed anything, henced "it is almost confirmed". As far as the test goes, mine apparantly passed, but the associate clearly saw the ghosting from one of my photoshop presentations so he went ahead and ordered one anyways, and repaired it.

I say "event" because that's what one of the apple associates reffered to as. (His little submission form on his goofy looking  iPod touch)

Makes sense too... if they're running a TEST designed for this issue, and have an option to order/replace the display, it would only be logical to replace it with one that is NOT of the same manufacturer.

    Off topic: kinda:

Realized the RAM is not upgradable on my 8gb base model... definitely want 16gb's, and since this rMBP was a gift, i didn't have much of a choice, but dang am I a happy dog. However, I found out my employer has an EPP program with apple offering 17% discount, I'm just wondering how well my return will go (in store) and then I have to order it online... probably gonna have to go through the whole screen replacement adventure as I'm sure it will be shipped with a trouble-causing LG panel... but gonna save $200 at least from a price tag that was paid for me

    but ah man, apple... (sigh)

For $200? Naw, it's just not worth it to gamble and end up with an LG display again. Cut your losses and enjoy your rMBP man.

By the way, what country are you located in?

hey man u can't discourage me like that lol, i already wiped the drive and packaged it. i can't be stuck with 8gb doing design work, video and music. and that's $200 saving with the 16GB upgrade. so pretty much im adding the 16gb option and still getting my rMBP free

    im in US/ MASSACHUSETTS

It's unbelievable the way that you guys are being treated.  I've been following the release of the new iPhone over on Macrumors.  There are many that are complaining that their brand new phones have scratches and chips coming right out of the box.  Seems like a manufacturing defect to me.  They're calling to complain, and Apple is sending them new phones overnight, and giving them other things like lightning dock adapters and chargers for their troubles.  You guys spend at least 2199 on a computer, and all you get from Apple is mixed signals and a bunch of other BS.

I guess that the iPhone has a lot more visibility, and Apple is afraid of negative press.  Too bad they can't get some negative press about this.

I was just about to get a rMBP and I'm glad I came across this thread. I might still try one from the Apple store but unless its a Samsung display, it is going right back.

Yeah, I'm holding off for a couple of reasons.  Though I do have IR, it has not really gotten worse in a week, and I have to set the screen up to force it to be noticible.  I've especially tested it with Aperture which is my main concern as it has a dark grey background, but I didn't see it happening there.  Only when I turned my whole screen dark gray and put something on it for a few mintues.  Like Safari even shows.  Can't see it on a desktop picture or light grey.  The other reason is, I don't want to go through a bunch of constant fixes and playing a lottery game to get a screen that is perfect in the meantie obsessing and driving myself and everyone else crazy.   I will wait until the issue is under control and in the meantime enjoy this really awesome computer.

There were two replacement display part numbers and now there's only one. So, it does appear, in Canada at least, that if you can convince Apple to approve the screen replacement under warranty, you will likely get a Samsung. That's what I think anyway.

When I had my first display repair, the Apple Store called me when the new display arrived, so that I could bring in my rMBP. When I was there, they told me only ONE part arrived and that they were sorry, but until the SECOND part had arrived, they couldn't fix my Mac.

So, as it seems, now BOTH parts are shipped TOGETHER and they don't have to order TWO parts anymore, but only ONE.

This means they IN FACT changed the display repair procedure, but unfortunately it doesn't mean FOR SURE you won't get another LG replacement screen.

I really hope they'll only ship good Samsungs, but it isn't confirmed yet.

I demonstrated in the store using iTunes and a desktop image. I had iTunes on the screen for about 10/15 minutes while I synced up a new iPhone that they had just replaced for me. When I flicked to the desktop you could still read text from iTunes on the screen.

Subsequently I got a phone call telling me they had run the test and there was no problem, despite the text of the job sheet reading (on and they couldn't find anything wrong with the USB ports running their tests either):-

    Problem Description/Diagnosis

Issue: When there's is an image left on the display for more then 5 minutes there's ghosting on display. Also customer is having issues with USB devices, disconnecting and reconnecting like the iphone. When customer uses USB speakers the music speeds up and slows down, and there is a distortion.

Steps to Reproduce: Visual. Verified ghosting issues at bar when customer left iTunes up on display, you could see ghosting on display. When running MRI it froze when using USB to Ethernet adaptor.

Proposed Resolution: Replace display for ghosting issues. Triage and resolve issues with USB ports.

Cosmetic Condition: Scratch to Bottomcase at left side.

    Known Liquid Damage: No

    Check-in Required: Yes

Estimated Turn Around Time: We'll call you in 3 - 5 days

    Mac OS Version: 10.7.4

    Hard Drive Size: 251 GB

    Memory Size: 16 GB

    iLife Version: n/a

Ah shoot.  I guess I'll just return it.  Today is the end of my 14 days.   While I don't have MUCH IR, it is very slight at this point (and could of course get worse), what continues to bug me (and it's the only thing really other than the unknown of IR presenting itself and then having a difficult time getting it resolve) the only thing that continues to bug me is the somewhat LOW BRIGHTNESS of the LG screen.  I don't like a screen too bright, but I shouldn't have to keep it at 87% (2 clicks from high) just to have normal reading brightness in a DIM room.  I can't imagine having to run it at FULL brightness all the time, just to see in a normal work environment?  And with the slight screen glare, one is better off with more brightness.

I guess I'll just wait a few months and order when they get thing right.
