Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

It could very well be that an LG display arrived and then the repair shop received an order to NOT install it, but wait for the Samsung display to arrive. That's probably why they told you what they did.

Unfortunately this was on my first display repair, which resulted in a second faulty LG. =(

Well, that blows my theory all to h**l.

You know, I just got a Samsung display last Friday, which I am happy with, but I still feel bummed out. I feel as though I've been betrayed by a friend, by someone I trust. I'm sure that most of you understand what I mean. Apple was more than just a company that you bought gadgets from, but now...

Yes, I thought the same thing when I fired up my rMBP with the new Samsung display for the first time, but I didn't see the LG and Samsung side-by-side to confirm it. It does seem like a slightly better display, and no IR.

you are very lucky, finally a Samsung screen. I was lucky to the first time. I regret sending it back for a few dead pixels and a missalignled loose bottomplate..... I gambled when I should't... Seeing it from another way. All we should and may expect is 100% quality. Premium products.

I have to admit I really didn't notice any difference at all between my 3 LGs and my actual Samsung besides IR. This could be because I didn't have them side-by-side, but colors, brightness and contrast seemed equally good to me.

As far as the LG/Samsung concern, it's still random if you'll get one or the other. There have been week 38 LGs and Samsungs, so nothing is set in stone there.

It should be the same for week 39, even though I really hope Apple sorts this problem out one and for all!

Don't regret it. Noone should settle for a not-so-faulty-but-faulty-nonetheless display!

As far as keeping it I will use my 14 days.  I am hoping the image retention shows up to make the answer obvious what I will do.. but I am worried if I do not return it even without the image retention what will happen if it shows up later.

Don't worry it will show up, but you could probably see it now, just need to warm your computer up a bit. Watch a video minimized on ustream.com for 5 minutes, then change to dark grey background, you should see faint IR on day 1.

On day 5 with my Samsung display and I can say that I like it better than my old LG. Beautiful screen, I am very happy, just still worried what would happen if anything goes wrong with this screen.

I am a bit concerned and frustrated that I have not yet been contacted by the executive office, despite having sent a message last Wednesday morning...  I was sincerely hoping that they would help me resolve this because I'm not sure I have much faith in the genius bar at the local Apple Store.

There is another 'Apple authorized' shop in my city - should I consider contacting them?  Maybe if I don't have any luck with my genius bar appointment at 2:45 today?

I'm still waiting on dispatch notification on my replacement.  I'm happily working away on a samsung rMBP at the moment and there's no denying the screen is fantastic.

At first I thought I just had dents in the bottom and was questioning returning it.  However, since Thursday I've also noticed a slight concave warp in the unibody construction and one of the fans is making an intermittent grinding noise!

I'm expecting a week 39 or week 40 and to be hoenst this has put it in perspective - right now I'm just hoping I get one with a perfect construction.

    Go to the non-Apple store.

hmm thats a very good point, ive been getting quite anxious about the whole lg or samsung issue however it isnt a permanent image burn and yes I would hope the machine was in excellent physical condition before even thinking about anything else. At that price point it will have to last me five years.

    Hi,

Here's someone who knows how to verify the display, if it's Samsung or LG, with the serial number or without open the box. I'm getting my rMBP next week trough Best Buy, and I don't want to keep it if there is a LG display. I just want to check it at the moment right when it touches my hands.

    Thanks!

just to report my second LG display is showing now IR/ghosting after 5 days. i will maybe replace the unit one more time if they extend my warranty for the time i wait (month) or after the thirt i will go for a full refound. this is not funny for a machine that costs so much money.
