Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

so general consensus is that they do let you hold onto your current rmbp while they ship you a new one though right? I just don't want anymore down time as I have spent enough time just waiting for my first one to get here. hopefully it's not an LG.... but if it is I sure as **** don't wanna have to send mine back, be without my computer for at least another week... then have to reinstall everything. that would really tick me off.

Yes, I would say it is more likely now that they know the problem.

All you have to do is call 1800APLCARE and tell them that you need this computer and tell them to send a replacement and when you will get a time frame to send your defective one back.

It's probably not what some of you want to hear but I ordered mine (2.6, 512, 16) the day after they were announced, got it pretty quick.  Had zero issues up until I installed Mountain Lion on it last Thursday.  Now I have the ghosting and image retention.  Sometimes its minor, sometimes its really bad.  It's dissapointing because it was perfect for awhile and then all of a sudden the issue popped up.  I have an LG display too, so if you have one knock on wood and cross your fingers because your days might be numbered too.

I plan on going to the Apple store tommorrow and seeing if I can work something out since I'll be on vacation next week and hopefully they can correspond the repairs to when I'm gone.  It's not an option for me to not have this computer for any amount of time as its my primary business machine.

Sigh, I'm sorry to hear that.

This just makes me determined to get a Samsung screen.

I will return 100 computers if I must.

But I'm sure Apple will stop me before the 10th one and just send me a Samsung one.

I'm with you Jerbz.  I don't care how long it takes, I'll return every single one until I get a Samsung screen.  Apple can keep my 3k dollars but I'm darn sure going to get a non-faulty screen.  Of course we are all assuming the Samsung's won't experience the same problem at some point.  It's a little disconcerting to me that some are not seeing issues for a while.  I sure hope the Samsung screen models don't start developing this issue several months from now.

Better keep eyes on the screen regardless brand. I got my rMBP having the IR issue out of box. Then replacing for 2nd rMBP which comes without any problem until one month later. The IR issue happened again.

Went to the Genius Bar, they offered two options: one is waiting for a stock machine as replacement; another is returning the total amount of money via Apple GIFT cards.

Guys i have rMBP LG screen and i don't have any isses with it. crazy thuoght, maybe some of us has SHARB instead of LG. I have been for two days watching closley every single pixe and with no flawess whatsoever. I might do the test wrong if it's not that noticable!! so can anyone please post a youtube explane what is the best way to test your screen to find out about the IR. I'm returing mine, not cuz it's LG but i wanna upgrade to 512 after the new configuration.

And i'm still histitate what should i ger 2.3 or 2.6 i don't care about the speed i have read all about it but 90$ is not worth to think about but my concern is the battery. Is it true it runs longer with 2.3 up to 9 hours according to engaget

So I have a rMBP (with an LG screen). Well, IR didn't show up until after the 14-day period, and I called AppleCare, the Apple Online Store, and went to the local Apple Store. They are all refusing to replace the machine, and they will only do a repair. I got the stock 2.6/8/512 model, and after spending ~3k, I find it horrible that I need to get it repaired in less than a month after getting it. I'm pretty upset, does anyone have any ideas on getting it replaced?

Probably will be a lot more hesitant to purchase expensive Apple products if they refuse to replace defective units.

Again, please no one else accept anymore LG screens.

Send apple a message. This is getting ridiculous.

If you want to accept the LG screen because you can't wait for another computer, well, your loss.

Guys, I am shocked. My friend called me, he just received his rMBP and said that there is something wrong with the display. I went there and found a quite noticable pink tint, a dead pixel on the lower left corner of the screen. When I did some tests with white/black straps followed by a dark grey background, I found that the screen also had image retention. I was more than sure that it was an LG screen, but to my surprise, it was Samsung Already arranged a replacement with Apple. I don't know what to do. Mine will be arriving on friday. I was thinking to send back if it would be LG display... but seing that Samsung has that problem too, I just don;t know what to do...

Also, another guy @ macrumors forum confirmed having samsung display with image retention (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1416687&page=3). Really, Apple must do something urgently!

How did you arrange the replacement? did you call 1800APLCARE?

    What did you tell them?

It's worth keeping in mind that not all Samsung displays will be flawless.  They will produce a small % of bad panels just like any other manufacturer so I wouldn't make too much of one case or even a handful.  We'll see how it plays out going forward but all the evidence to this point seems to indicate the Samsungs are a safer bet.

Yep, I called apple care, and got redirected from one rep to another, till l Igot connected with their one of their seniors. I told him the problem, also told him that I have all the rights to return the item without explanation and get my money back. I told him that all I need is a working macbook, and that for almost $3k I am not going to be settled down with issues and problems. So he said they'll arrange a replacement, if that'll fit me, to which I agreed. Now waiting for the replacement to arrive in a week. Hope this one will be normal. And also I keep my fingers crossed for my order. ****, I'd be so disappointed to be forced to make another replacement call.

I specifically requested a replacement each time, and each time, they said they can only do a repair. It's ********, to be honest. I even said I'd be willing to wait a few weeks for the units to arrive at the Apple Store, because they said they didn't know when they would get them. They are going to call me when the screens arrive to repair it. But honestly, I don't want it repaired, I want it replaced. Is that being too stubborn? I don't know.

Well, if you call them before your 14 days run out, they'll almost certainly will send you a replacement, otherwise you can just return and get your money back. As to things happening after the 14 day period, to be honest I don't know what is the Apple's policy on that. But the idea that a new laptop is going to be repaired is just disgusting.

Vindictum is right. You're definitely outside that 14 day range.
