Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

When I ordered my machine, I also read the articles about the issues with retention on certian rMBP.. You can bet there were always be issues with 1st gen machines, but knowing apple then.. they solve them some time down the road. When my machine was new, within the first 14 days the problem didn't show up, it was after a 1.5 months that noticed as I saw the icons from my desktop burned into the grey screen..

I wasnt aware there was a problem until after I had ordered, I looked at tons of reviews and not one of them from the leading websites had mentioned anything about image retention issues, when I did read about it after I thought it was an isolated few as there are always teething problems with 1st release products.

My rMBP developed massive IR then I scheduled a repair. The replacement display arrived and THEN took 2 Weeks to do the replacement in the Apple Retail Store. Last week I got the rMBP back again and guess what... ANOTHER LG.

Couldn't produce IR at the apple store but NOW after a few days... IR is there.

Now I'm afraid of doing the repair march of waitinng-another-2-weeks again. Dissapointing.

Is there not a program or movie file we can run when you first get the rmbp that will reduce IR and other methods to reduce the chance of it appearing such as using a slideshow desktop background.

I recall when I first got a plasma tv screen many years ago some websites stated it was best to run it on a 50 percent brightness setting for the first 100 or so hours before cranking it up and this would prolong the panel display. Other websites have stated that image retention is a problem on new displays and will reduce with use, does this not apply here or is the image retention so bad the screens are unusable?

Im not sure I would want to actually, knowingly try and create IR if it can possibly be avoided, or can't it?

So it looks like Apple offers Samsung screns for 2.7GHz/16GB so far, but wonderign which week they will stop doing it.

They may think that if user bought the top product then may give them a headache in the court.

Anyway, I am very happy to have a Samsung one, from week 38.

    ok thanks.

I first ordered a 2.6/8/512 but I am returning it for 2.6/16/512, which is assembled right now.

I would have liked to check the first config as I just received it today. But as I am returning it, I am not feeling like opening the box just to check this....

    All,

    I have gone through FOUR - BTO - 2.7/16/512 - build week 31, 33, 35, 36 - all LG w/IR.  IR developed anywhere from day 2 through 10.

All returned for full refund in 14 Day return period. Yes, my credit card company probably hates me for all these purchases and returns.

Unfortunately, EDU $100 gift card promo is over, so now I don't even get that!

Waiting for 5th, ordered yesterday on apple.com, that should be entering assembly hopefully today/tomorrow. Delivery 10-1 to 10-3.

If 5th unit is LG then I think I will try genius bar route to get a non-IR Samsung.

I ordered a 2.3/16/256 - week 33 EDU apple.com, for my daughter, and it was a Samsung on first try! No issues on it whatsoever after over a month.

The time consuming part of this is process is making a time machine backup to time capsule, then restoring it to new unit. The time capsule internal storage is VERY slow, and 100 GB take about 2 hours. The bummer is that after the transfer it pops an error message that not all of the settings transferred and so you must start the process over.

And another note, why in the world would the programmers allow the MBPr to go to sleep during a restore? It made no sense to me that my unit that was plugged into power, was going to sleep during a full restore!

Good luck everyone, I have read every post of the 243 pages on this board to date, and believe that Apple should step up and resolve this issue we all are experiencing.

IR is not part of any specification, and if so, should have been DISCLOSED to public prior as the RETINA display was the KEY feature of the new MBPr, allowing the consumer to make the decision if they wanted to buy a $3500+ laptop with IR/ghosting/burn-in.

BTW - I do like my iPhone 5, which I paid full retail for on launch day, and is carrier lockedd! At least ATT gives a 30 day return with only a $35 restocking fee. Hope they release a factory unlocked iPhone 5 within 30 days in the US!

Mine has just shipped, will be arriving next week.  Week 39, about 150 builds after yours.  Main difference is the build - i've got a 2.6/16/256 coming.

Will update when I receive it.
