Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I think that these days only 2.7GHz/16GB BTO may got it.

This is not true.  There has been plenty of people with this config in the past that has had LG displays.  NOBODY has found ANY pattern to what machine gets an LG and which a Samsung.

so last screens are Samsung....sounds great.

    is there a way

This is also not true.  Mine was just produced last week and arrived with an LG.

The week of Sep. 23rd (this week) is week 39.  Mine also said week 39 according to appleserialnumberinfo.com but I received it yesterday so obviously it could not have been produced what we would consider this week.  http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi shows week 38 for production week which would be correct.

So I got a more sympathetic person at the Genius Bar today...

I simply showed him the pictures I dad of the failed test among other things - and he said it was good enough for him.  He order a replacement #661-7171.  Samsung I hope??

Please do update us when you find out. Some of us have a theory that part #661-7171 is a Samsung-only part. S**t! I forgot to check my work order when I got to work today. I will do it tomorrow and let you know what screen part number is on it. I now have a Samsung screen.

Good news! I just checked my work order and the part number for my replacement display (a Samsung) is 661-7171. I really think we're onto something, so if you bring yours in for repair, request that they ONLY use this part number.

Sorry about the anti-Apple rant, but Apple is ridiculous.

This issue occured to my laptop again today, second display in ten days, and Apple refused to repaired it!!!

I went to the Apple Store today because image retention occurs on the newly installed LG-display, 4 days after I got my laptop back from repair (same burn-in issue)

I completely lost my temper when the technician at Apple Store described this as a "feature" of the technology to me today.

A feature???? To help graphic professional see distorted version of their images instead of clear ones to inspire creativity????

To make it worse, they REFUSED to offer another repair on the basis that they now have a website "teaching us" how to avoid image retention - mainly, "enable screen saver function."

HOW THE **** am I suppose to work on my laptop when the only way to avoid seeing a silhouette of contents imprinted on my screen all the time is to allow the screen to go into screen saver mode once in every 15 minutes?

Enable screen saver? Apple, not all your customers are as clueless about technology as you may think. Some of us know that your Apple Geniuses are really just technician forced to smile all the time, and image retention, ghosting, image burn-in, or whatever you call it, is a PROBLEM not a FEATURE.
Calling it a "natural occurrence" is not going to make it ok

There's a 244 pages thread on Apple Support Communities about this issue; Apple, if you really care about your customers, DEAL WITH THE ISSUE.
Don't just sugar coat your customer service by making all your employees at Apple Stores to smile unnaturally all the time, and when real problems occur, they simply become part of the corporate machine and quote the corporate lines to angry customers.

I wasted three hours of my time negotiating with the managers at Apple Store, who only reluctantly agreed to another repair after I threaten to escalate this.

I was told that if they can't fix it this time, they won't agree to another repair.

    We will see about that

    I just got my BTO.

    It is the LG display.

    Should I return it?

It seems that LG's will develope this issue over time.

    I am tired of this.

Please don't take this question wrong, but I would like to understand what you guys are doing to get the IR, brightness, screen resolution, etc?  I purchased the top model (2.7 ghz / 16 GB / 768 GB with LG screen) and have been using for a week at auto brightness @ 16 x 10 resolution, and haven't noticed any images staying on screen after closing the applications...

Thanks for your answer ... in this so bad situation I appreciate to read everyday this thread and see how everybody is handling the situation.

Today I had a call from the service center telling me "well since 12 days we ordered the new display and today we called apple to check the status of this order and they told us that there are not enough stock for the retina and you have to wait" ...From a fun view I can imagine that with all our probelm the stock is coming down but anyway I think that they are not putting my french workshop on a good priority for delivery

I'm calling right now an apple customer representative to see what they say to me and I'll update you all.

It wasn't until my 7th machine (i.e. 6 returns) that I got one with a Samsung LCD. So there doesn't seem to be a problem with returning over and over.

My first was a 2.7/16GB/768GB and it was week 30 (all checked with http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com)

After that I ordered 2.7/16GB/512GB because I decided a 768GB was overkill when most of my data is on NASes.

    Had a machines from week 33, week 34, week 37, week 38 and 2 week 39s.

Every one (until 7) had an LG display. On the first one I did not notice IR until after a week. Did notice the yellow-tint and lousy brightness immediately. I called AppleCare about it within a week of delivery, and they wanted to me to take it to an Apple Store and give it to them for an indeterminate amount of time to get it repaired ( ! ) Yes, with a brand new machine and they wanted to "repair" it, not replace it!

After talking to Apple, I found this thread and ran the terminal command ( ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 ) discovering I had an LG display.

So I returned it under the No-Questions-Asked returns policy, and ordered another by myself. have not bothered speaking to AppleCare since.

All were pretty average, besides my fifth one, which was an LG, but it did have good brightness, and wasn't "too" yellow. It showed IR on day one - could not see when first turned on, but visible after the machine warmed up.

My belief is that big part of the problems with the Retina MBP is that the machine vents up and on to the display, exacerbating the problems with LGs AP-IPS technology. Just the worst design for a panel that doesn't like heat!

I didn't find returning and replacing the machine that much of a problem. I scheduled return pickups for the same day as the next machine was due. I work from home, and the delivery guy always came around 9am. The night before a would back the "old" one via Time Machine to my NAS (fast, since it was an incremental) and restore to the new one the next morning (about 30 mins). Before boxing up the old machine I would boot Parted Magic from USB to write zeros to the drive to completely remove my data.

After machine 5, I ordered 6 and 7 the same day because I wanted to be done with this. Both arrived the same day, only the 7th machine had a Samsung display, so I have one machine left to return. Being able to see both an LG and Samsung side by side the it is obvious that the LG display is inferior - less bright on maximum brightness, and a yellow tint (my wife also agreed when she compared them).  And machine 6 with the LG shows IR within 5 minutes of a still image on day one.

This all seems very wasteful, but I tried AppleCare first, and they were no help. There might be a flood of "refurbished" MacBook Pro Retinas for sale soon!

While there may be "good" LGs out there, after 6 duds all from different weeks of production, I don't think there can be many!

I did not notice anything until about 10 days after I started using the machine (normal brightness, standard default resolution).  I even specifically looked for the issue when I first got it and almost everything looked great with no image retention.  The one exception was that I could not get the screen as bright as I wanted (I kept trying to increase the brightness ever once in a while even though it was at full brightness).  After about 10 days I thought I was seeing lines from edges of windows that were previously on the screen.  It didn't really bother me as it wasn't really noticeable.  After a few more days though it got progressively worse and I did not have to specifically look for it.  It was interferring with my ability to use the computer because I could actually see text from windows that were previously there.

I use Xcode to try and develop apps for Mac and this is extremely annoying.

You WILL eventually get it with an LG display..  It is only a matter of time.
