Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

My belief is that big part of the problems with the Retina MBP is that the machine vents up and on to the display, exacerbating the problems with LGs AP-IPS technology. Just the worst design for a panel that doesn't like heat!

This relates to what I mentioned a few pages ago.  The easiest way to check for image retention on an LG display is to have the Calendar app in the middle of the Dock at the bottom of the screen and using daringfireball.net as the background window that you place behind the dock.  After a while hide the dock and check if you can see the date where the calendar app was while having that web page as the background.

You should do this when the back side bottom of the display is at least slighty warm to the touch (closing the display most of the way helps).  Make sure the display display won't sleep and screen saver is off.    Normal use should warm the back side bottom of the display enough.

The dock works well for this test since like you say the heat from the computer will warm the screen the most there.  The image retention directly correlates with temps and appears to cause permanent damage over time.

Hi, can you confirm the build number on your week 39 samsung screen?  As per Appleserialnumberinfo?

    Thanks

Are you sure it will cause permanent damage over time? That means in a year or so from now we get many mad rMBP users with permanent burned in screens.

Please don't take this question wrong, but I would like to understand what you guys are doing to get the IR, brightness, screen resolution, etc?  I purchased the top model (2.7 ghz / 16 GB / 768 GB with LG screen) and have been using for a week at auto brightness @ 16 x 10 resolution, and haven't noticed any images staying on screen after closing the applications...

Some machines have it on day one. There were also plenty who bought it in July and then started noticing increasingly worse IR by September.

More use, more IR. Heat seems to make IR more pronounced. Do something CPU intensive for a while and then test it. Brightness doesn't impact IR but could impact visibility of it. I think it's more visible on a brighter settings.

The test? Use a gray background (the darkest default solid gray that comes with OSX). Leave Safari up for a while. Minimize it. Check whether there is a ghost.

Either way, it's only a matter of time on LG. Your options are to do nothing and wait until it develops severe enough IR so Apple would replace the display or return it within your 14 days and hope for a Samsung.

Both machines I received from week 39 were in the 200s, 31 numbers apart. They would have been built the same day (they left Shanghai the same day).

The build number will tell you nothing about your machine if it is in the post. There would be multiple production lines, and it seems that both LG and Samsung parts are being used each day and each week (has been confirmed by many people, multiple times in the course of this thread).

You won't know until you get yours.

    Hmmm ... I got a <Edited By Host> on my last post.

They left my advice to do a credit card charge back, which I would think would be a more extreme course of action. Others "stuck" with a dodgy LG-screened machine have called AppleCare, asked to talk to Level 2 support and eventually found someone who would agree to replace their machine (read about this some 100 pages ago).

This is why you may not see any image retention to begin with no matter how hard you try, even doing CPU intensive work that heats the machine up.  But then later you can easily see it without doing anything CPU intensive.

It's a logical conclusion and explains why it takes less time the more days pass by.

This seems crazy that I have to do this but I've reverted to ordering two "lottery tickets" at a time (one yesterday, one today from Apple online store).  Returned the LG I received yesterday with IR today.

It's worth noting that I placed a couple calls to the rep I spoke with originally with Apple's Executive Relations team. I left voicemails both times, using the extension he provided and the case number. Never received a call back. I think at this point the most logical explanation for recent events is that I've somehow slipped into a bizarro alternate reality, where Apple's products are shoddy and where they treat their customers with disdain.

    Worst alternate reality ever.

Cannot believe I paid over $3,500 for a laptop to edit photo and videos with and am having image retention issues. It also really bothers me that the LG and Samsung panels differ in quality so widely and I got stuck with the inferior LG panel.

Apple needs to publicly address this issue and offer replacements to anyone who notices this fault and deems it unaccepptable. I'm a professional photographer and this is completely unacceptable.
