Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Yes, as someone mentioned earlier, Apple thinks it's OK to shaft their customers with a stupid test that's designed to give Apple the result they want, but it's NOT OK to use the word "s-u-c-k-s" under ANY circumstances.

For instance, "my vacuum ***** dirt up off the floor" is just plain wrong!!!

Well, if they do decide to silence me, they're going to have to do the same to a LOT of people on this thread, especially over the last several days. I mean, I'm not even posting links or anything, so if they do suspend me or ban me, it will show their true colors even more. Apple needs to get a grip on reality and realize what a **** storm they're creating here, and it's only going to get worse. Over 2000 workers rioted for hours at Foxconn this week, which does not bode well for quality control, if the mood there is that bad.

    Heya folks,

just tested my two year-old Apple Cinema Display 27" (before the 'Thunderbolt' Display) for image retention.

    No image retention.

It is an IPS panel, FYI.

Therefore, the argument that all IPS panels produce this phenomenon is invalid.

Simple logic (as in, first order predicate calculus in symbolic logic):

    - universal claim that IPS panels produce IR,

    - existential claim that one panel doesn't produce it

    - therefore, universal claim is wrong.

Now, if 'some' IPS displays produce it, then there must be 1- a reason why some do and some don't, and 2- an acceptable threshold as to when IR is tolerable and when it is not tolerable.

Apple says that " 1- iR is 'normal', and 2- your screen is within spec?"

First premise is irrefutably false, and second premise is completely subjective, vague, arbitrary, and worse, unknown to customers as to what criteria are used.

The fact that there are multiple implementations of the IPS tech, such as SIPS, AHIPS, or even a hypothetical KFC-IPS (which is probably what I had, since it makes me sick), is rather irrelevant to the debate. Apple's tech specs for the rMBP make no mention at all of which IPS tech is used, who the vendors are, and where is the "results may vary" advisory to potential customers ? Oh I see, nowhere it is mentioned, because there's nothing more embarrassing than admitting that not two displays look alike on their unified, uniform, magical and revolutionary devices. Same story as what happened with NTSC television sets, look it up. Europeans and Asians were laughing at NTSC, with their superior PAL-SECAM...

Not to mention the PLS tech we all want, and which comes as the outcome of a lottery system. As predicatable as the forecasts of the so-called 'analysts' for Apple's stock.

Finally, I must close by mentioning that my iPhone 5 has a horrible, horrible yellow tinted display. Compared to my iPad 3 and my MacBook Air, it's gross. I will likely return it in a week or so, on day 14. I am not sure the 'yellow' will go away, after all... And no way to calibrate.

This was my 5th iPhone, my second iPad, my 19th Apple computer (not counting replacements), since 2005, when I got my perfect looking iBook G4... Apple, what happened ?

I most certainly hope that my newly installed Samsung module is flawless as it should be.

This is the third one after all; I am getting a bit tired of going back to Apple Store and been treated like a clueless person by the Genius technician.

Just for a point of reference, here is my LCD info

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM235304HCF49HBS

I tried the regular LCD test via The Lagom LCD monitor test pages

For some reasons, I don't think my new display passes the white saturation test

I cannot distinguish box 254 from the background at all; 253 is already pushing the limits(barely visible)

My gemma correction setting is 2.2 as it should be for this test

Could anyone try this to see if this is a "natural occurrence" of the technology?

HOW are you all going to the Apple store and having them fix your screens? They refused at my local Apple store. What kinda company has Apple become? This makes no sense at all.

I posted my experience on page 244; in sum, they refused at first, but after three hours of negotiation they agreed to a repair on the precondition that this would be the last time.

first they refused, told me to call apple care if I'd like to escalate this

so I did, and was told by apple care that they only handle software issues, not hardware

when it comes to hardware, the manager at the local apple store is the top of the hierarchy who gets to call the shots.

so they asked me to go back to apple store to negotiate with the manager

at first the manager just came out with the technician who dealt with me in the previous repair, and told me that he was going to affirm what the technician had said to me, mainly, they cannot fix this because it is a natural occurrence in IPS display technology, and that my laptop passes their new bogus display test.

but he changed his mind after I demanded him to put his name on a case file and give me a copy so I could escalate it to someone higher than him.

he agreed to a repair on the condition that this would be the last time, which is a completely unacceptable and ridiculous thing to say

here in Australia, consumers are entitled to repair, and in the event of repair not been able to resolve the issue, we could request for refund.

This is applicable even after the products' warranty expires, so for Apple Store to tell me that they wouldn't fix it two months after I bought this $3000AUD+ laptop amounts to blatantly lying to customers.

I've been very impressed with Apple's customer service up til this point.

Now I couldn't be more abhor. Wasted three hours of my busy morning in Apple Store dealing with people who treat me like a clueless tech-caveman is not high on the list of my priority.

good thing that they managed to changed the LCD overnight.

and the attitude of the managers, apart from one particular technician, had been very friendly and helpful.

United States. This was in the Palo Alto, California Apple retail store.
