Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Therefore, the argument that all IPS panels produce this phenomenon is invalid.

I had an iMac for years, which has an IPS panel (if I'm not mistaken, someone please correct me otherwise), and not once did I observe any IR. My rMBP on the otherhand, allows me to view iTunes even after hiding it. I'm not even exagerating when I say I can create IR in three minutes with appleinsider.com.

My Samsung television, on the other hand, has an amazing picture. The reality is that Samsung makes good LCD panels. Heck, they make good phones, too (patent infringement aside). I just happen to like OS X and Apple's ecosystem better than the alternatives.

Ok my fourth screen is screwed up now also. Takes 15 minutes under normal operating set up, with not much CPU or GPU engaged, but if any heat is coming out its almost a joke how fast it happens. Heres what I am going to do.

Open up the console and run the following command three times

    open -n /Applications/Chess.app/

This should open up three chess game apps. Now in each app run a new game with computer vs computer at 256 seconds per turn. Start a new game when checkmate happens. This should take up 3 of the 4 cores.

Next open up itunes and start the visulizer I think that thing still uses some GPU power.

Wait for some heat, then have them run their test. And tell them you actually use the computer to its fullest and this isn't that far off from what your runnign it under, which for anyone running photoshop in any real fashion, or a CAD system, or well anything profesional you aren't lying.

Btw I just did the above and caused the IR in less then 2 minutes. CHECKMATE! If thats with in their specs then Apple isn't worthy of my business anymore, or anyone I know. What a joke.

I just tried this on my new Samsung module (1 day old), let it run for ten minutes.

Nothing, no image retention. Hopefully this will hold.....

How do you determine if your display suffers from light leak?

    thanks

mine looks a lot like yours, the four corners of the screen has a bit of light leaks

but it is a lot less than the kind of light leaks reported by some users,

I wonder if your screen constitutes "light leak" to Apple

You can click the picture that I posted, and you can see the four corners are light leak on the black backgroud.

I tried to examine my 2011 macbook pro 13', and found that it also has a very small degree of "brighter corners", just like my macbook pro with retina display

they are not nearly as bad as the photo I attached here

I wonder if this is also considered as a "normal occurrence" to Apple..

Hey, this is my first post on the apple support forums, and I'm experiencing a problem with my rMBP. The screen is an LG; before I made an account here, I scoured the interwebz looking for a solution to a problem I just noticed today. It gets so bad after about one minute that I can read text perfectly until it fades several minutes later. Other than venting, I do have an actual question:

Does apple actually replace the display if there is a screen burn and you send it back to them?

I ask this because I called support twice today (the first time the guy was a real ***** and told me it was normal and a few other insults), and the second time a very nice woman was sympathetic to my problem and filed a repair and shipped a box to me (it should arrive tomorrow, but it looks like they forgot my dorm number...).

If I'm going to pay $2,999.99 for a laptop... it better be f****** perfect.

    Thanks

Edit: Oh, it's a Mid 2012 (not sure what week... Mid August) 2.6/16/500

When and where did you buy yours? Online or in-store?

I originally purchased a base model in store, was an LG panel, had the IR issue, had it replaced by apple with a Samsung one. Then I decided I really need the 16GB RAM, returned my base model and ordered online. Really hope I don't have to go through the repair again. Even though it won't be that bad, they order the screen, once it's in they call me I drop off my MacBook and its ready next day :)

    Hi,

Sorry for a slight OT, but I noticed today that my new rMBP is emitting some strange high pitched noise, especially when doing heavy files operations like spotlight indexing or startup of the computer. It's louder and more prominent when I connect the AC adapter. It sounds like some power interference, a bit like some broken chargers do or Iphone 4s when transmitting 3G data.

It's not very loud but I can hear it clearly, when sitting in a silent room, even without closing my ear to the Macbook.

Has anybody noticed that or can advise something? Is that normal with those machines or some issue that has to be fixed? I really don't want to return it, as it is perfect otherwise...and with a Samsung screen (5th machine!!)

    Thanks in advance for feedback.
