Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I noticed the problem thanks to iPhoto as well.

I checked the laptop the first thing I bought it, but at the time nothing seemed to be wrong.

two months later I noticed this when I was editing photographs... I thought it was some sort of transparent background effect at first... then I realised it is the hidden feature of the macbook pro with retina display

Hey, this is my first post on the apple support forums, and I'm experiencing a problem with my rMBP. The screen is an LG; before I made an account here, I scoured the interwebz looking for a solution to a problem I just noticed today. It gets so bad after about one minute that I can read text perfectly until it fades several minutes later. Other than venting, I do have an actual question:

Does apple actually replace the display if there is a screen burn and you send it back to them?

If they are sending you a box to return your machine in for a display repair then they will replace the entire screen.  There is a chance you will get a Samsung display.

How long have you had your machine?

Did you buy it directly from Apple?

I thought I would quickly update re my Samsung screen (received 1 week ago). I'm not checking obssessively (as I did with my LG!) but I don't appear to have any IR, dead pixels, light bleeding - touch wood! Infact I am very happy with this machine. The only slight niggle is my left shift key is very loose compared to all the others. I can definately live with that over the other problems I had before, but just out of interest can something be done about a loose key?

Really ***** that this LG issue is still ongoing. I really hope that everyone gets a good machine without having to go through multiple replacements. I re-ordered myself and I'm still waiting for the refund from the previous machine to go through, so 2 lots of £2100 out of my bank at the moment - ouch!

    Good luck!

    Over and out.

They replace the whole top part of the laptop (clamshell), as the LED backlit IPS LCD is literally glued into the aluminum clamshell.

There is no way to disassemble the top clamshell for repairs, hence the insane cost for the repairs (looks like it's 700 $ + for the part, plus 30-40 $ for labor, in Canadian $, which is the same as USD nowadays).

Has anyone receiving a Samsung screen run into issues with it being yellow? I finally got a Samsung screen but it is visibly dimmer/yellower than the in-store display Samsung at full brightness..

The Samsung displays I have seen were all beautifully white-blueish, colder than the yellow tinted LG displays I had.

On a slightly different note, if there are any other Students who have purchased a rMBP you qualify for 3 years basic parts and service free in the UK see here:

At least that will help with screen issues as I didnt take out AppleCare I was going to do it later in the year, glad I didnt now as the only difference is phone support.

Yeah, the image retention problem shows up really good on the grey forms in Apple's own apps (i.e. iPhoto, iMovie, AirPort Utility, etc). This IS a REAL-WORLD problem Apple, and if that silly test that the "geniuses" perfom in the Apple Store would use the same color grey as many of your own apps (not the almost black grey that you're currently using), everybody would "fail" the test.

Again, if you buy a retina macbook pro from a retail store and it has image retention and you don't catch it in the 14 day window. You are (likely) screwed. They WILL NOT fix it if you bring it back to the physical retail store.

So I encourage everyone to run the terminal command and check to ensure that your panel is Samsung and not LG if you just purchased one of these machines. If it is LG, return it IMMEDIATELY. Keep returning until you get the Samsung panel.

I'm now stuck with an LG screen that has image retention. I purchased my laptop about a month or month and a half ago. It only just recently started showing image retention and it has worsened over the past week or two. It takes less than a few minutes to appear (it used to take longer) and it's stronger (it used to be more faint). I imagine at some point it will get to the point that it makes the computer unusable (it is unusable  as is in my opinion - I'm now doing all photo editing on an old machine in the meantime because the brighter parts of photos get stuck and I can't accurately adjust photos).

Apple WILL sell you a lemon and not take it back or fix it, REGARDLESS if you purchased AppleCare or not.

    Buyer beware.

This entire experience happened at a US retail store.

I emailed one of the LCD testing places about the retina MacBook Pro issue and this is an excerpt of what they said:

Ghosting and Image Retention should be effects that are only barely noticeable with test patterns - consumers should not notice it under *normal* use. We very seldom see any significant Ghosting and Image Retention on any LCDs, except occasionally on prototypes that we test for manufacturers. Ghosting and Image Retention is a production problem and is not normal.

Hey, thanks for replying. At least there's a chance, I suppose. And I had to buy my rMBP directly from Apple because of the RAM, but it was well over 30 days ago. (I think the help center said I had 36 days left on my 'complimentary' phone service, so that means 54 days..)

Can (more like will) they still help me?

The irony is, I am sure many with me would gladly pay a bit extra to get the Samsung screen. I would
