Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I quote from you " The senior technician stated he was aware of the problem, and that the faulty screens are no longer being made in production." Would it be truth? No bad (LG) screens anymore?

I got my screen replaced today with the part number 661-7171 ended to be Samsung panel. Will that be then the part number to refer to when asking for replacement.

I have to say that at the end seems that there is a consistent way of getting Samsung panels by asking for panel replacement rather than going for a brand new unit like many are trying to do, although is a question of choice.

My fisrt impresion about the Sammy is that lacks the vivid colors and withes that I had with LG, the angles are not as good as well, but it does not have -for the moment- any of the defects that some owners are having like dead/stuck pixels, light bleeding and so on...

At the end of the day I have a mixture of fellings... I feel that is not over yet, that I expect that a new issue will popup later... but time will tell. For the moment I will try to calibrate the colors and get acustom to the angles.

Are more of you with Sammys experiencing new problems?

I too noticed that the viewing angle was not near as good as the LG. Fortunately though, that doesn't matter to me, because I'm the only one using it and I'm always staring at it straight on.

Great to hear! Let us know (A) if you get a Samsung display (I'm 99% sure you will) and (B) if the replacement part number on the work order is 661-7171 (as all of us with Samsung screen replacements have received).

    P.S.

Considering the article you wrote, you are likely the squeakiest wheel here.

I made a Genius Bar appointment for Monday 9/24 at 10:15 A.M.  I arrived and checked in and was asked to sit at a table and wait a few minutes for my laptop to be examined.  I had my desktop set up with the solid charcoal background.  I opened a JPG file with a black & white checkerboard pattern and zoomed in for the pattern to fill most of the screen.

A couple of minutes later, the representative approached and asked about my problem.  When I minimized the checkerboard image, he said, "Wow!  That shouldn't happen!".

He arranged for overnight shipment to a repair center in Houston.  He indicated that when the display was replaced it would be returned to me overnight.  He said the entire process should be completed within seven days.

I received the repaired unit this morning, 9/26 and verified that a Samsung display was installed.  The Apple Repair Summary states the replacement screen's part number is 620-5813.

Despite Apple's schizophrenic blatherings of late from "it's a problem, but we're working on it" to "there is no problem, you're looking at it wrong," I really want to believe them on this one. Maybe that's just Stockholm Syndrome setting in, though...

They told you the faulty screen were no longer in production.. Well I just received mine 2 days ago which was produced last week and it had image retention.  Unless of course he means they are no longer in production as of this week.. we shall see since I ordered 2 this week.

Weird, that's a totally new part number.

Ordered up a fully loaded MBPr 2.7/16/768 on Sept 16th to celebrate a promotion at work, just arrived, and its a samsung screen. Build week 39.

I have to admit, I was a very worried man after reading all these posts so i'm extremely relieved!

Either I got lucky or the top end version is being shipped with samsung screens (I suspect it is luck though!). Still, good to know samsungs are still being shipped. No problems so far, although the track pad isnt the most responsive, but it's probably just me getting used to it given this is my first Mac.

In general though, it is brilliant, so much better than PCs.

(One quick question though - am I right in thinking that in mountain lion the dock is much less reflective? I personally quite liked the previous version i'd seen in the shop which reflected the apps/they were almost mirror like, whereas on my new pro, it is much more opaque).

You are right! Although, I work with images on clear backgrounds (the logo of my company) and when tilting my head or moving my eyes from one side to another, I have the weird impression that i gets darker on the left side of the screen... je je, all related to the viewing angle, nothing that can not be corrected by tilting my head... that's seems to be a good answer from Apple, because is working under specifications when you tilt your head!! je je je

BTW, I have ordered the Sypder4 Color Calibration... I want to get the colors as accurate as possible.

    Cheers!

If Apple has indeed recognized and solved this production issue, I wish they'd acknowledge it.  I've called several different Apple numbers - Applecare, Sales, Retail Store - and none of them will even admit knowing about the issue.

Yeah, it's very unlike Apple to be so inconsistent. The fact that all of us are getting different stories would suggest that Apple's "official" position has not yet been determined and people in middle management are doing the best they can to figure out the "right" course of action. (For all the good that's doing.)
