Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

how many replacements, refunds, repairs, multiple orders and pages on this thread will it take to solve the problem???

Remember the disaster of antenna-gate? First they denied it by telling us "you're holding it wrong", then after it made the national news and every soul heard about it they said "You're imagining, but here's bumper as consolation".

Then they fixed the problem that apparently never existed in next revision of the product, iPhone 4s.

In this case they have an easier fix, namely ditching LG for Samsung. However, it's a limited product release of tens of thousands compared to iPhones selling million on launch day. Unless there's enough noise Apple will just shrug it off until next release.

Yeah, it's very unlike Apple to be so inconsistent. The fact that all of us are getting different stories would suggest that Apple's "official" position has not yet been determined and people in middle management are doing the best they can to figure out the "right" course of action. (For all the good that's doing.)

I believe the technical term for that is a "cluster-f**k".

You know, I wonder how many people initially found out about the image retention problem from this thread (like me) and other web sources before they even noticed it on their own machines? I'll bet you at least half of us.

If, in the beginning, Apple had simply told affected customers something like...

"Shhhhh. We know. There's a problem. Please bring your rMBP down to your local Apple store and we'll quickly replace the screen for you and have you back on your way. We'll throw in a $100 gift card for your troubles too. Don't tell your friends, OK"

...things likely wouldn't have gotten so bad, and it would have bought them some more time to figure things out.

    They really botched this...big time.

My fisrt impresion about the Sammy is that lacks the vivid colors and withes that I had with LG, the angles are not as good as well, but it does not have -for the moment- any of the defects that some owners are having like dead/stuck pixels, light bleeding and so on...

Are more of you with Sammys experiencing new problems?

Yes, I have some noticeable light bleed

I am in two minds about requesting a replacement. Screen bleeding is more tolerable than image retention at this moment; but it is a problem nevertheless.

I was going to ask for a replacement LCD in a few months when, hopefully, Apple fixed the issue with its quality control.

But I am a little concerned that they would refused to replace the unit by then.

I find it utterly ridiculous and unacceptable that I have to choose between image retention and backlight bleeding

when Apple charged me $3000up for my laptop

Here's an image of screen bleeding of my Samsung LCD, taken in day one (today is day 2)

Another update on my laptop after a long time: Just to clarify, because my last post is pretty old; it's my first and only order that I recieved on the 31st of August (BTO, week 35).

I guess I got a good LG display (by comparison) because the image persistence showed up about two weeks after that; and it hasn't increased much, and it's almost a month after. It's still extremely minor and doesn't distract me with my work.

I still can't see it on the Blue Pond wallpaper (an Apple one). I can see the menubar faintly if I open Mission Control; but honestly, who stares at the background in Mission Control? You just switch windows quickly and that's that.

Sometimes, if I'm working in Word (which stays static for quite a long time when I'm writing essays for school) and then switch to a grey background I can see the outline of the window, and it's definitely gotten worse. Icons in the toolbars are visible as well.

However, the ghosting is still not noticeable if I don't use a grey background, and the only reason I know about this issue is because I saw this thread a couple months earlier prior to buying my laptop.

Also, I didn't understand the complaining early on in this thread about the warmth of the whites on LG screens. Here's a photo of the amazing color depth and contrast this display has; it's unedited and I haven't boosted the contrast. I've always been really impressed by it.DSC04643.JPG

LOL... T_T I was hoping it would just give you an idea of how good the colors are, not an exact representation of the color gamut of my display. And hey, don't hate on Dell.

Will they comply to my request? or will they just go "Oh i'm dumb and can't tell or find out what part you are going to get"?

    Apologies for an irrelevant question.

How do you use Word on the macbook pro with retina display?

It is not optimised for the retina display yet, and doesn't look like its going to be in a while.

I have been using Page for word processing, which is awful.
I'd appreciate it if you could shed some light on this matter

The recent office 14.2.4 update solves the problem... well it's meant to. Follow the terminal commands here and then will work fine:

I just did it yesterday (had to use the 'sudo touch' command) and now it's optimized for the retina

I know for a fact that they can see the part number they're ordering, so do ask them for it. Will part # 661-7171 be a Samsung display? Well, every person on this thread who's had their screen replaced with this part number has received a Samsung display. That's about all I can tell you.

    Good luck!

Well, let's just say that I'm not in Toronto and the company who did the repair doesn't have a location in Toronto. Sorry.
