Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I'm also interested in buying a new mbpr, can anyone else confirm this???

side note -  I visited an apple store in london ontario, i took a look at 8 of the mbpr on display, I entered the terminal command to check if its a samsung or lg model, 5 of the 8 where samsung!, who knows maybe they are shipping only samsung now.

Mine just shipped directly from China so we shall see if they are all Samsung displays.  I have another that should be shipped tomorrow as well for extra confirmation.  Should arrive Monday or Tuesday.  Stay tuned.

No one has confirmed this. Apple lie the whole time. Not so sure what we can believe from them.

Just to be clear, I didn't say that it was true (Apple shipping only Samsung displays), but that I hoped it was true. As for Apple compensating us for our troubles with free software, that was just a suggestion of mine, one that I hope Apple will listen to.

Anyone with LG screen that has NOT turned bad after more than a month of usage? I guess they wouldn't be reading this forum if everything is ok...

My rMBP LG is a month old and I have had no problems. My screen has been calibrated with a spyder4pro and the colors and contrast are great. Maybe the only difference between the LG and Apple cinema is the LG has a minimal pink hue, I use photoshop everyday and final cut, all good so far.

I read these discussions every day and I must admit i feel like my rMBP is a time bomb.

    Hi Rush,

Where abouts are you located anyway?

    I just want to throw this out there;

I called applecare yesterday, I said "I would like to buy a mbpr but I hear some of them are shipping with faulty displays, if i get a faulty unit can i get it exchanged",

first she gave me a generic response that "yes all macs come with 1 year warranty and if something is wrong with the display they will replace it." I asked her if she is aware of any problems with the mbpr, she said "I havent heard of anything, I deal mostly with software related problems"

    ok fair enough but..

thats not the answer I was looking for so I further explained that the mbpr ship with either a samsung model or lg model display, and that the lg is faulty in that is has image retention, I asked if I get an LG model can I have it swapped for Samsung.

Now she is telling me that they cant gaurantee that I get a non faulty display, and "there is no way of telling if the unit has any IMAGE GHOSTING, because its in the box" and they cant check it.

I didnt mention the term image ghosting, that tells me she does know about the issue but isnt admitting it.

maybe im wrong but something irked me when she said that..

further more I believe apple is fixing this issue quietly, they are perfectionists after all, they just dont want to admit it because then they will have to mass recall.

anyway we will know soon enough..

I took delivery on rMBP yesterday, 2.6/16/512 with a build date is week 39, number 461. It has an LG screen.

I was looking forward to a Samsung screen as many week 39s had one.I am running a dozen movies looping in an iTunes playlist to exercise (or exorcise) the LG screen. This is my third rMBP since July and I am getting tired of schlepping machines back to Apple.

No IR so far with my test but I will run the daylights out of the screen and the chip to test this box for stability. If it shows developing IR right back to Appple it goes. Is there an hope that Apple/LG might have solved some of the screen issues? I am noting that some have reported that all new rMBPs will now be Samsung screens.

I don't want to have the very last rMPB with that new beta feature iPictureInPicture....

As I mentioned a few pages ago mine was also a week 39 that I received on Monday and was an LG and also had IR.  Having the display closed most of the way so the screen heats up more makes it easier to see the IR before it becomes more prominent.

Edit: It was build #604 of that week.

I will be taking mine in to have the screen replaced today - got the call yesterday that it is in stock.

I am fairly confident that it will be a Samsung - but I'll let you all know.

How long does it usually take to do the actual work?

I wouldn't care if it took them half the day...I'd be happy that they were doing it. I was sent away when I went into the store. They would not fix my machine. Calling up AppleCare here in a moment.

GOD, can they make it any harder to find their number??? Any more forms to go through describing a problem that doesn't quite fit? Any other hoops? Grrr I HATE this company. It's WORSE than any PC manufacturer. No I take that back, they are the equivelant of those shady PC manufracturers. That just send you to 50 dead-ends before you get something of value.

My screen replacement took under 4 hours for the replacement and extensive testing to make sure everything was good. Basically, I dropped it off at 9:30am and picked it up at noon.

I don't really care either - glad they are doing it...  Just curious as to how long I should be without my computer.

Office 2011 for Mac is now opimized for Retina. See the articles below. I have installed it and it does work but I had to run the terminal commands in the second article. Regardless, the IR issue is still rediculous and I am still fighting to get this resolved. I will continue to update:

    Hello everyone!

I am a potential buyer of the rMBP but am very worried about all I've been reading in this thread and on Apple's unbelivable behavior.

Could some of you guys advise me on whether it is likely that i get a faulty LG display? Is there anything I can do at the store to make sure i get a samsung display? I'm in chicago, if that helps...

Moreover, do you think it is a must to purchase the Apple Care program?

    Many thanks in advance!
