Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

What was your process up to the call that it's in stock? I have that Genius Bar replacement appointment tomorrow but can't leave the computer with them for days. Called to see if it's in stock and they said I have be there in person to find out. Thanks in advance!

Am I right in guessing you are UK based?  Doesn't spell good news for a couple of others (myself included) expecting week 39 builds tomorrow or Monday.

Well, first of all, I didn't go through a "genius" at an Apple store. I found a local authorized Apple re-seller who's repairman was certified to replace Retina displays on rMBP laptops. Then, after he "persuaded" Apple to give the go-ahead on my display replacement, he bent the rules a bit for me and ordered the replacement display before I dropped my machine off. Usually, they won't even order it unless you drop your rMBP off with them first. In my case, he ordered it on a Wednesday, received it on a Thursday, and repaired my rMBP on the Friday. They were really top-notch about it. I'd mention their name, because the service was soooooo much better than what I've read here about the Apple stores, but I'm kind of worried about getting them in trouble with Apple.

As I mentioned a few pages ago mine was also a week 39 that I received on Monday and was an LG and also had IR.  Having the display closed most of the way so the screen heats up more makes it easier to see the IR before it becomes more prominent.

Edit: It was build #604 of that week.

I'm expecting my rmbp on Monday or Tuesday next week its a week 39 build number 141

The wait is killing me I ordered it on 16th Sep, its currently been sitting in a wharehouse on the mainland as deliveries with Ups chosen method dont deliver to my area everyday.

Thanks Canuck. Best to probably not mention as it's unlikely I they're in my proximity. Appreciate it.

GOD, can they make it any harder to find their number??? Any more forms to go through describing a problem that doesn't quite fit? Any other hoops? Grrr I HATE this company. It's WORSE than any PC manufacturer. No I take that back, they are the equivelant of those shady PC manufracturers. That just send you to 50 dead-ends before you get something of value.

I actually find the support process seamless, especially with their voicepass feature that identifies who is calling.

Start your case at expresslane.apple.com then just select to call them. If you have your number registered with your product for voicepass, you just get put through to the right person and they already have the case you started from their web site.

Once you get a working screen, definitely purchase AppleCare for the rMBP. Since so many parts are glued together, it can get expensive as whole sections of the computer have to be replaced even if only one component is broken.

I say, "after," because you don't want to give them more money until they fix your problem. You should be able to get support for an existing issue even if resolving it takes you beyond your warranty period.

And remember you have up to a year before you need to purchase it.  You don't have to purchase it right away.

Called AppleCare. The guy said there is nothing he can do. Must go to the Genius Bar to get it checked out. He can't even order part to fix or replace.

The store person told him that I should get a brand new replacement because ALL NEW RETINA MACBOOK PROS WILL NOW HAVE SAMSUNG SCREENS.  NO LG SCREENS FROM NOW FORWARD!!!  Was I ever relieved!

Seems odd, to be honest. Odd that an Apple Store person would have knowledge of supplier information. Odd that Samsung could ramp up their production to the point where LG could be completely abandoned. Odd because people here are getting BTO units with LG displays even as we converse.

I'm not saying it's not true. I am saying I have my doubts. Time will tell though.

Yeah, that would be bad. I put two reminders in my calendar. The first two-months in advance; the second, one-month in advance. Just to be safe. Though AppleCare for this product is expensive!

I think this is the second recent instance that we hear about this. First one had no mention of specific vendor being excluded but just that the defective screens are not in production anymore.

At the same time the skeptic in me thinks we'll have to wait for actual confirmation. If over the next two weeks all the new orders happen to be Samsung then it's pretty safe to conclude that Apple has actually made a move to fix the problem.

There's credit card extended warranty too but that usually goes no more than one extra year and is certainly slightly less convenient than AppleCare since you pay and then are reimbursed for the repair fees.

If you plan to not keep the laptop for more than two years then maybe AppleCare is not a necessity considering the price. Then again, I would prefer buying a used machine that has AppleCare left rather than one without.
