Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Yeah, I like to get AppleCare only for high-ticket items. Plus, I try to sell my system before AppleCare runs out as it gives the buyer a bit more piece of mind (also increases the resale value a fair bit).

If true, this news about switching exclusively to Samsung displays is indeed exciting!  While I, too, would like to have some confirmation, I don't think it's that far-fetched...  Hasn't it already been semi-confirmed, based on empirical evidence gathered from this thread, that repairs are pulling from Samsung displays only?  That seems to suggest a conscience choice on Apple's part...  Hopefully that choice filters down to main production as well.

After having gone through three rMBP's (all with some issue...), I decided to ask for a full refund.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this Samsung news proves true, so I can order one yet again!

Pretty much the same story with mine.  Got minor IR only with dark grey desktop and particularly the 3333 grey.  Doesn't show up in launch pad, doesn't show up on apple photo desktop and most importantly doesn't show through the dark grey of Aperture.  Only when the desktop is grey.  The degree of IR hasn't changed from when I first noticed, but then its only been a little under a month.  No reason to take it back at this time.  Will continue to monitor and if it gets bad or signficantly worse, will notify.  I use the computer all day at work and at nite as well.

I kept my last system for 5 years and I plan to do the same with this one, which is an even more advanced machine. I can't see myself selling it in two and half years or something, but you never know. If this one starts giving me trouble, I'll get it repaired and then maybe try and dump it before the 3 year mark.

My 14 day period has ended. I bought mines from Bestbuy and just learned to live with the IR "feature"

Being a student I had to finance it, so those refunds and buybacks would have killed me in between all the procedures, it's a shame how Apple dealt with this situation.

Overall the machine is great, all of us bought it because of it, but this so called IR "feature" really killed the mood with it and shows how powerless as consumers we are by only being able to refund the defected product and waste countless hours for it.

Anyways to all the fighters out there, good luck!

    Peace out.

Don't give up "amazinABZ". Hopefully, by Christmas break when you have more time (if your school shuts down for this holiday) and this has all sorted itself out (I'm confident it will), you will be able to walk into an authorized Apple dealer and have your screen replaced with a new Samsung display. We'll keep fighting until that happens.

Well Apple, I hope you announce something within the next week as my PC alternative has just gone on sale. My first choice was the rMBP with a working screen (for almost double the price). I also wanted to try a company that I was told would treat me better than any other tech company I've ever dealt with. However, based on this thread I doubt that's true and from what a couple of people have written about the stores blowing them off about their screens, I stand the chance of being treated worse than I've ever been treated.

Apple, the LG's are broken, whether its a design or production problem doesn't matter to your customers. No, "test" will convince anyone otherwise. No mumbo jumbo by your employees will convince them either.

You either have eithics or you don't Apple. If you don't you'll continue the way you have for the last couple of months concerning these screens. If you do and this was just a little fumble then you'll do the right thing by your customers and in my case, first time customers.

Do the right thing Apple, it's not like you can't afford to be ethical, if that's what you'll base your decision on.

If you bought from Best Buy, you get 30 days, not 14.  You still have time to return it.  It sounds like that would be the best option.  Return it now, rebuy when they've sorted through all of this.

Week 38. Since we still had LGs in week 39 this is one of the lucky Samsungs.

Weeks 40-42 would be key though.

ALL NEW RETINA MACBOOK PROS WILL NOW HAVE SAMSUNG SCREENS.  NO LG SCREENS FROM NOW FORWARD!!!

    ...

I can corroborate this.  I was explicity told on the phone that the defective LG screens are no longer being used on the production lines.

About me: I am waiting for delivery of my 5th rMBP (October 1).  My first rMBP (ordered June 11) had a beautiful Samsung display, but had a damaged bottom casing.  Unaware of the whole Samsung/LG ordeal, I ordered a replacement rMBP without a second thought.  The next three computers had LG screens with very apparent IR (and so I have been silently following this thread since page 100 or thereabouts).

As for the telephone conversation in question, it was a standard AppleCare call.  The first-level rep had me try things like resetting the PRAM (yeah right!) and setting the screen saver to 1 minute.  Then he told me that IR was just a 'feature' of IPS displays.  However, when I told him that my first rMBP had a Samsung display (and therefore I knew what a rMBP screen should look like), he immediately transferred me to his supervisor.  The senior rep was very candid about the whole deal, and he assured me that the next rMBP I received would not have a defective LG display since they were no longer being used in production.  Fingers crossed!

Was it "defective LG" or "LG" being discontinued? The former is not good as that's what I heard from Apple (sans LG part) for my first and second replacement. That is, I was just "unlucky" to get a defective unit.
