Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

just talked to the genius bar.

told him straight up the 'test' is not fair, does not reflect on how i use my computer.

he insisted on running the test. after the test, to be honest, i didnt see the checkboard (my rMBP passed, of course)... but the guy actually said that he is seeing the checkboard pattern.

he is giving me a full refund / exchange.

during this process, he was reading many memo's on the computer... seems like apple is finally realizing this problem.. and letting us FAIL the testing?

my machine also passed the 14 day period FYI.

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE

oh, i only asked for a screen replacement but he insisted to swap the whole machine since its not fair for me to have such issue when I only have had it for less than 3 weeks.

thank u so much for your help Canuck1970!!

i even went to an authorized dealer before going to the apple store, thinking the result at the genius bar will prob be negative.

the guys at the authorized dealer were very friendly and was going to fight for a repair for me. i was going to drop my rMBP off on monday for diagnosis there.

so part of the problem is solved.. now, how to get a samsung rMBP?

i need to return my rMBP on monday... so will get a new unit then. Should I start the lottery now?  Buy until I get a Samsung? seems a lot of work. WIll they let me return + buy on the same spot?

Thank you guys for the response you gave me previously. So I gather that Apple Care is strongly recommended and that I can wait a bit after I buy the rMBP to purchase it.

Now, from what I understand there seems to be a shift towards the Samsung displays, in that many people that ordered recently have got one. I know it is just anecdotical evidence but I might be willing to take the gamble if a full refund is possible.

In theory, could I buy the rMBP online, pick it up at the store, test it to see if it has a Samsung, and return it if not? Do I need to give any basis for the total refund? I mean it seems really idiotic to reject a refund on the basis of customer non-satisfaction within the 14days, but with all that I have been reading so far,  Apple looks like some sort of evil company...

Any other issues for the rMBP that I should be aware?

Many thanks to everyone, this thread is doing an excellent job in bringing Apple's conduct to light!

Others have mentioned that certain departments at Apple are saying they are no longer using LG displays on the production line.  If this is true you should find out within the next 2 weeks if this is so.  Several people have orders coming in so we can verify this.

Well i went back to my safari history and manage to find the link that they perform the phony test with /gray extention. I know i can't access it with my home nextwork, but there is a thumbnail of. so i screen shot that, use the color sample tool, and what i got is R:31, G:31, B:31. Which is pretty much almost black. Thanks UltraMax.

I tested my monitor with a 31 RGB setting and could make out a faint amount of IR. My Coda window has been open for a while now.

Not really a fair test though. It would be difficult for the human eye to recognize anything on a pattern so dark. I'm guessing this test was not put together using any peer-reviewed, scientific method (I chuckled a little on the inside typing that).

I'll try a checkered pattern later today.

My previous LG would have failed that test, but in my opinion, the darkest grey that they should be using is the background in iPhoto or the Airport Utility. That's real life.

The first from week 40 with a Samsung here. Fingers crossed that somehow it is truth, and only Samsung screens will be used from now on...
