Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I am following this thread from the begining and I almost read all posts from the first page. Here is my little story about this IR problem. I bought the basic configration rMBP from a reseller on the 24th of August. From the first day I noticed IR and it is obviously an LG display. As all of you know it gets worse after a while, so I didn't wait too long to test more. On the 28th of August I returned back to the shop and asked a replacement with an upgrade of 2.6 / 16 / 256. A friendly guy in the shop accepted me to send it back to Apple for a replacement. Imagaine, it is sent one month before and still I don't receive back the replacement. And today I went to the shop and explained to some other guy about the issue and asked him to check on the system if there is news on my replacement. Finally he told me that they receive an e-mail stating that Apple refused the replacement and he tried to explain me that famous procedure that Apple posted on their knowledge base to avoid such IR problem. And told me I have to still wait a week or two to receive back the orgingal rMBP that I bought. I politely said him I don't receive back this defect rMBP and asked him to refund me back. He said we will see the refund thing together with the shop manager when they receive back the defect PC. My question is --- Do you guys think that I am out of 14 day return policy to get a refund? I use though this PC for only 3 days.

^^ seems real abnormal. Refused a replacement for 16gb? I say the reseller is fishing something... Doesn't sound like apple to me. Apple has their own flaws and what not, but I doubt they would refuse a return... Especially if you're upgrading. Heck, even a return without a reason is fine. Maybe deal directly with apple next time?

Whoever believes this might as well stop posting on this thread, ok, it's just not constructive.

That's incredibly rude.  I was merely passing along my conversation with a senior AppleCare rep on the phone, as it may be of interest to other people reading the forum.  I was explicitly told that they had ceased using the LG screens on the production lines.

Oh, and by the way, today I received rMBP #5 (2.6 GHz, 16 Gb RAM, 512 Gb SSD).  It has a Samsung screen.

I've been following this thread for a while now, and I just wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone on here! I just picked up my base model rMBP at an Apple store. I had a ton of anxiety about the whole screen issue, but decided to make the purchase anyway. Ran the terminal command and...It's a Samsung!

It was built Week 37 - LSN154YL01001. Very very slight light bleed in the corner, but no dead pixels and, of course, no IR.

The absolute best of luck to everyone! I'm sorry some of you have to go through all this absurd trouble, but keep searching! Samsung screens are out there.

    ran my serial:

Model:- MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) (CTO)
    Codename:- No codename assigned.
Build Country:- This unit was built in China
Build Year:- This unit was built in the second half of 2012.
    Build Week- Week 40 (September)
Production Nr.:- This unit was number 771 to be built that week

i ordered this unit on September 23, 2012 and it shipped on the 26, recieved it today on the 28th.

my original base model was purchased from a local apple store where i quickly learned that the panel was a junk LG. of course the apple people replaced it with a samsung one (lost about 5 days waiting) and then i decided to upgrade to 16gb ram and went through the online store. though not officially confirmed, it looks like apple only deals with the samsung guys now. not bad... quite honestly reading all the bash on them and how they dont care etc, i think otherwise. ive been PC user (and still am) for years, but looking how this company has grown and the line of products they offer, its amazing. even with all the hype over the iphone, they manage to get everything straight within a timely matter. no need to wait for a 2nd generation rMBP like so many suggested

alright back to work on my rMBP

Ok , no luck, no sympathy, afther their test passed, just a cold "Apple follows its own specs, not the user's specs"

The test is as follows:  checkerboard matrix for 3:00 minutes, and they are not asked to look for IR on a very dark background until 1:00 minutes after the test is over.

To me, this is totally not representative of the use mode of ANY computer. Just typing this is taking me longer than 3:00 minutes. When I minimize this window, I will See IR on my non-uniform PHOTO I use as a background.

I am a photographer. This screen is presented as " IPS technology gives you a wide, 178-degree view of everything on the screen, so you’ll see the difference at practically any angle. And you’re going to love what you see."

I do not love seeing IR on my photos, I love even less been treated like I am making things up,

what is wrong Apple? You used to have the best customer support and most loyal customers!

you may have saved some $$ by not replacing my screen, but by treating with no sympathy whatsoever, you lost so much more! my appreciation! and many more purchases to come.

So I was lucky enough to receive a Samsung display my first try, but I was curious to see a LG display in action. Went to the apple store today and tested three screens using terminal and found them to be LG displays. After putting on a dark gray background IR was apparent within minuets. It was not surprising, but I was still in disbelief at what I was seeing.

Truly sorry to all you users who are having to deal with this, its a shame that Apple has not owned up to the problem. We all have spent the same amount of money on our specific machine, we all should get the same product, and seeing that an LG screen is defective, we should all have Samsung display.

Hope you guys get everything resolved and Apple wakes up to this problem.

Hey guys, been following this thread since about page 50 and just wanted to share my story. My first attempt was mid august when the Samsung screens were in very low supply and i got a BTO with a faulty screen. i didnt even bother to test it out as i opened it, entered the unix command and drove down to the apple store to return it. Unfortunatley, had a bit of trouble dealing with the apple employees even though i had opened it that morning. they gave me trouble due to the fact it "passed the test". I probably shouldn't have brought the image retention problem up but i felt like it would be good for everynone else considering it was just one more case of the same thing. Today i went to a different apple store and thoroughly explained to an employee my situation and the difference between samsung and LG screens. He was very very helpful and told me i could open two and run the test to see if they were samsungs. Unfortunately, again, they were both LG's and i got my money back. The whole process only took about 15-20 minutes and he seemed to have no problems with me opening two boxes. both were base models from week 37 and dim/yellow LG's.

IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ THAT TEXT PLEASE AT LEAST READ THIS!!!!

my main question is, i would like to know if anyone has recieved a week 40 from an apple store. Or when someone does please post here.

    Hey Canuck,

    Just want your opinion

Would it be fine if I could ask for a downgrade with the same specs I had for my rMBP:

    Classic Macbook Pro

    256 gig SSD HD

    8 gig RAM

Do you think it would be a fair trade?

Considering the screen as a parameter which I'd like to sacrifice.

    Thanks

I'm a photographer. My rMBP has a slight IR, hasn't gotten worse in 2 weeks, Only see it on all drk gray background.  Doesn't show in Aperture or photoshop and hasn't affected one photo I've processed.  Are you actually seeing the IR in your photos or do you just think you do?  i know different screens are exhibiting different degrees of IR.  If yours is so bad that you can see it in a photo in an editing program, it seems that Apple would have to replace that screen.
