Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Well, retina macbook's architecture won't allow it to be not as "tightly" built. But even if something goes wrong, you are free to take it to them and complain.

Vindictum is right. Replacing the screen would require them to reglue the screen back onto the computer. rMBP has been rated one of the toughest machines to repair in Apple's production history.

If you consider that a verbal attack you have very thin skin but I should have realized that when you got so defensive earlier.  No worries, I'll move on.    Back on topic...

I have to agree.  A repair is probably not a great path.  I obviously do not have a ton of experience with Apple repairs but the one time I did have the screen replaced due to it being slightly warped and not fitting into the frame correctly my laptop definitely ended up with other screen related issues which were not part of the original problem.  I was patient and took it back to them a couple times but they simply decided to give me a brand new one.  I'd be very nervous having this type of screen replaced/repaired, etc.

I wish that there was some way to find out what the problem was, whether it's software or hardware, and what Apple is even doing about it.  And if there's even anything that can be done.  I returned my second MBA today.  I just didn't like the screen.  My wife's MBA has a great display.  Nice and bright and clear.  Mine was exactly the opposite.  No matter how I calibrated it (Spyder 4 Pro), it was always sort of dim and compared to hers.  The screen was not nearly as bright, and everything was less sharp.  Funny thing is that hers is originally mine.  I decided that I wanted mine BTO, so I gave her that one and got a BTO.  Now I'm Macless.  I was thinking about getting an rMBP, but now I'm just going to wait it out until these problems go away.  The thing that I find most disturbing is that many people seem to have things start going wrong after the return period.  I've seen a number of people come on and say that everything's good, just to turn around and say that they're starting to notice issues.

It would be nice if Apple would give some indication of what's wrong and what is being done to solve it.  But that would require a level of transparency that Apple never demonstrates.

Well I am outside the 14 day window but they have agreed to give me a new computer.  Only problem is that the model I bought they did not have in stock today.  The manager gave me her business card and she is going to hold me one out of next shipment that comes in.  She also had them update my case I opened showing they agreed to replace it.  I recieved a call from a manager tonight in apple support telling me that the store would be contacting me in the morning.  They informed me to keep my laptop I have and use it till the store has one on hand for me.  Just hope that the one they give me has the Samsung display or they have addressed the issues with the LGs.

And part of the reason I think they agreed to just give me a new one is because the techs there had never repaired a retina display model and were not even sure if they could.  He was going into his talk about how it was out of 14 days but when he found out it was the new retina version and I pulled it out and showed in the burn-in he went straight to the manager.

I am just glad they are working with me.  I am fine with the 14 day policy if one of my memory modules went bad or my SSD drive died.  I understand those things happen, but to sell me something with a manufacturing defect.  No way I was taking a refurb.

Is there anyone here with a newly bought rMBP with Mountain Lion on it? I want to buy one, but I don't want to come across that display made by LG. I'm from Europe and it's harder here with Apple Care than in US.

I want to buy the rMBP from canada, with a 2.3Ghz or 2.6Ghz processor, and take it home. I would also like to get the model with a Samsung Retina display, not the LG, as i mentioned above. I'm hoping that Apple has solved the issues with the panel and these newer stocks to be well, if not perfect.

What are the chances to get a samsung panel with one of those two processors ?

    Thank you guys!

It's a lottery. You won't know what has been shipped untill you have the serial number. As to LG displays, they are not as bad as some people say. Check the Anandtech's review. It had the LG and told it's the best display ever put on a laptop. Plus Samsung has problems too. So instead of picking a brand, you'd better hope that your display comes faultless regardless of the brand.

P.S. I;d like to copy a post from http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1416687&page=4 "Reading through these forums trying to get information on the rMBP as a potential buyer is like Googling "chest pains" and reading you should call an ambulance immediately because you're having a heart attack!"

Just got my replacement. Its an LG screen. Ran a quick test an no IR as of yet, but, this display seems to me a lot duller than the last one i had (with the IR). Whats the best way i can test it to see if its fine? Its on full brightness at the moment and it doesnt seem as good as the last...

my personal advice is to return it and ask for either a replacement or a refund and order another one with a samsung screen.

people have said that samsung screens look a lot better and have better contrast, thats why you found it to be duller than the last one. There are more inconsistencies in screens produced by LG than Samsung.

Open Mail app full screen and prepare a gray background. Leave it for 30 minutes. Then check if is there anything left on screen.

Or you can do it with safari and while you are surfing web. After 30 minutes go to gray screen. People have said the address bar is the place that remains on the screen.

    Good luck

Yes, I typically open the mail app with the preview set on the email you get from posting on this thread. the contrast in the email between the white and the grey is perfect for testing for IR. That's also the way that I found out my screen had an IR problem.

Well, I was one of the first to order mine, base model with 16GB ram upgrade...got it after 4 weeks, terrible IR.

Immediately brought it to my local apple store, they said they had never heard of the problem. After a little resistance and basically having to prove that I know what I'm talking about, they decided to help. They actually pulled through for me and a week later they gave me an upgraded replacement model. I was extremely pleased with their service.

Brought it home, LG screen and (again) terrible IR.

Brought it back yesterday, felt bad for management since they upgraded me for free, but bottom line was the product is still faulty. The genius then told me that apple found out it was a firmware issue and they are planning an official bulletin soon to let people know that they need to update their firmware in order for the screens to work properly.

I smelled a little BS there and asked him, why firmware? He told me that some screens are unable to handle the high refresh rate so the firmware update would allow for slower refresh rates. So I said, some screens aren't able to refresh as well as others? to which he said yes, and I replied with, so the screens are still faulty, the firmware update will just not allow us to use a good refresh rate? and he said hesitantly, yes.

I don't know, is it just me or is that just a cheap fix on apple's part? I've been a long time apple user, i mean LONG time, and I've always supported apple when people try to tear it down. But I KNOW apple has the money to fix this right; why are they fiddling with firmware BS?

If I'm being ignorant please correct me, I'm all about learning. But I've been following this thread and felt like I should give my 2 cents, and possible some clues on what we can expect in the near future.

Sounds like it might be BS to me.  I mean if the LG screens can't handle as high a refresh rate as Samsung, why are some people having no problems until four or five weeks go by?  I suppose that it's possible that some people might just take that long to notice.  But it also seems that for some people, it get worse over time.  I doubt that refresh rate capabilities would begin to fail over a four week period.  It just doesn't make sense.

But even if that is the case and they were going to fix it by slowing the refresh rate, it still means that the LG panels aren't as good as the Samsung panels, and if I do eventually get one, I am going to try and make sure that I get a Samsung panel.

I think that one thing that we shouldn't expect is that they'll discontinue the use of LG panels.  I'd imagine that they have a lot of money involved in this, and they can't just toss them.  So if this thing with the refresh rate is true, we'll end up with two different types of rMBAs.  One with a faster refresh rate, and one with a slower one.  And the 99.999% of the buying public that doesn't visit these forums will never know the difference.
