Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Just received my week 39 build #523. It has an LG screen and pretty obvious IR, even at temperatures around 15°C.

Week 39 was still playing the lottery.  You may or may not get a Samsung with that week.  Week #40 is what everyone is waiting to verify if they are all Samsung since some people at Apple claim they are no longer using LG screens.  The few week #40 machines posted here have all been Samsung.

Boy I guess I am blessed! I took my rMBP to the Apple store yesterday because I had a dead pixel in the center (Just a little to the right) of the screen.

After speaking with Apple on the phone first they said they would replace it... I had pretty bad Image Retention issues also... but when I mentioned it to the Tech on the phone I was told "That's normal with these type of displays, it should go away after a minute or two"

Thank the Lord they were willing to replace my screen due to the pixel.... because now I have a Samsung Display.....  and honestly having used my rMBP almost every day since purchase... I immediately noticed the screen as being brighter than my old one.

I am one happy camper now.... and all thanks to a dead pixel!

See the Lord really does work in mysterious ways. LOL

What I really appreciate of Apple is, that they never make difficulties of dead Pixels. Even for one dead pixels you get a replacement or a new screen. Kuddos to Apple for that. Don't think many manufactures do that

tree_frog, I said "beileves", I never said you shouldn't report anecdotal evidence.

Do remark that as soon as you mentioned this post, a few other posters freaked out and are now convinced that this might be the case.

That's what I meant... People will believe anything, even the most irrational and unsubstantiated anecdotes.

There is nothing 'normal' about image retention on IPS displays. I have two other IPS displays at home, and one is 2.5 years old.

Not a single trace of IR, even after 30 minutes of the chessboard.

My third LG rMBP is exhibiting IR after 5 minutes +, of course, being the rubbish that it is. I just had my Calendar app on it for a few minutes and then switched to iPhoto and voilà, I can now see both my pictures *and* my calendar.

    What an exciting 'feature'...

    Hey Canuck,

    Just want your opinion

Would it be fine if I could ask for a downgrade with the same specs I had for my rMBP:

    Classic Macbook Pro

    256 gig SSD HD

    8 gig RAM

Do you think it would be a fair trade?

Considering the screen as a parameter which I'd like to sacrifice.

    Thanks

I don't think Apple would agree to something like that. I think you'd need to get a refund first and then buy the other one. You can ask though. It never hurts to ask. From what I've seen though, if you simply upgrade the RAM and the hard drive on a standard Macbook Pro to the same as an entry-level rMBP, you're actually paying more than you would for the rMBP...and you're not getting the..er...amazing(?) screen.

@tmathuram They will allow you to upgrade I did it in store so I could exchange in stoor instead of shipping it out. But I doubt they would let you do a downgrade.

Also if the week 40 really are the end to the LG screens its a scandal within its self that they stopped using the LG screens but wont recall the ones that are already out there.

Also they must be having general Qulity Control issues, my new one is fine but the the case edges are sharp.... like my coworker touched it and went "Ouch why is that so sharp." They will get dull with time of course its just wierd as....

Also it wierds me out that they aren't fine with one dead pixel but they don't have issue with the IR seems insane to me. I don't get how any IR on a new screen could be considered less of an issue then one dead pixel...... or even light bleed, which they don't seem to be ok with either....

EDIT: Do they really have to censor words you can say on radio and day time TV or even a cartoon aimed at early teens?

I will be taking mine in to have the screen replaced today - got the call yesterday that it is in stock.

I am fairly confident that it will be a Samsung - but I'll let you all know.

How long does it usually take to do the actual work?

Got the repair back - it's a Sammy!

    Hi everyone,

Just before starting excuse my English.

I got my Macbook Retina 45 days ago, which costs me $3400. Once I opened the box I started an investigation to make sure that my Mac has no ghosting issue. Everything was great, hoever after 44 days the ghosting issue showed up!!!

I called Apple tech support and they bokked me with an Apple agent at Apple store, Halifax, NS, Canada. The agent offered to replace the screen ONLY. According to the agent "it is the screen or the logic controller", "I will change the screen and will see".

Guys I am not sure if it is the screen or the controller, can anybody tell???

I am totally disappointed with Apple's policy. Why would they change the screen of a 45 days machine, that costs $3400?????!!!!!!! Why????

I am a loyal customer to Apple but what is going on? First the Ipod scroll, then the Iphone4 antena, then the Macbbok Retina ghosting and now the new Maps application!!!!

    Your English is good!

First off if it was the logic board (ie motherboard to everyone but apple) he could have tested that by clearing Video Memory, its not a very hard process and he should know how to do it.

Second it is the screen and nothing else. Apple is using two differnt type of screens, an LG Screen and a Samsung Screen. The LG has so far been the problem. Open up /Application/Unitlies/Terminal and run the following

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

If the second returned line starts with LP you have an LG.

If its LSN you have a Samsung.

Sense you have IR I am guessing you have an LG.

Basicly its good that they are just replacing the screen sense its an issue islolated to the screen.

Edit: Sorry typed to fast and left out some words lol.

    Thanks RoverTX!

    My screen's manufacture is LG

But why it showed up sfter 44 days of usage?? So can we say, even if the screen works very well at the begining, one day it might develop the ghosting issue?

Hi, quick question, if my 4th replacement is 10 days old, can I still apply for return and full refund? My original computer was ordered in July...
