Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Man, are u serious??? 4th replacement!!!

Did they replace the whole Mac or just the screen?

Macs. Im currently on my 5th rMBP...its finally samsung, but I have some issues with it and Genius Bar would not even have a look without leaving machine for a couple of days, so I think about just returning.

My second one is coming on Tuesday. On Chipmunk.nl i see with my new S/N week 39 and on http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php i see week 40. What is the right one now?

Chipmunk is actually correct but nearly everyone has been using the week # from appleserialnumberinfo which is a week later then it should be.  Week 40 of the gregorian calendar year does not actually start until tomorrow.

Everyone is hoping the machines arriving next week are Samsung since allegedly Apple has stopped using LG in production.  So far the few week "40" machines have been samsung.

    Hello guys,

Its been 2 weeks since Im using my rMBP. Today i was switching resolutions for more desk space and when switching I usually see blue screen for a second before showing the desktop, when that happend I saw ghost images of all my background applications. I was shocked as it didnt happen on my external moniter, investigating on this issue bought me here.

Do you guys think its a problem with the display? should I take my rMBP back for inspection?

Thanks everyone for reading my post

Just to answer your question @Tadziak

Yes, if it has been 14 days or less since you 'purchased' this rMBP (even if you have returned 4 or 5 or 10 other rMBPs that you got fully refunded before this one), then you can still 'return' this new one (within the 14 days) and get a full refund.

If you are near an Apple Store, go there, do not mention IR or screen issue, just say that you regret the purchase and would like to return it.  Say that the computer "just isn't what you want."

If you call Apple Online store, tell them you just want to return it for a refund, that you regret making the purchase, if they ask, you can mention the screen, but repeat that you're within your 14 days and you just want to return it.

(They have a code for returns called, "Customer Remorse" ...)

    Good luck!

chipmunk provides the correct production week #. But most people are siting appleserialnumberinfo production week # which is actually 1 week off (into the future).   There were two separate individuals who posted earlier this week that were told by people at Apple that they are no longer using LG displays for production.  A few have gotten week "40" machines already and were Samsung but it would be best to wait until many more people get their machines and report what they got before anything more assertive can be said.

A reputable author, who has also posted on this thread, was told by Apple that the defective displays (I have to assume they mean LG displays) are not longer being used in production. So, if that's true, and I beleive it is, then BTO rMBP should come with Samsung displays.

If you'd like to read the article, simply do a web search for "Apple’s Burned-In Customer Service: The MacBook Pro Retina Screen Image Retention Problem" (use the quotes).

    Good luck!

The only thing I would exercise caution with is that common build-to-order options (e.g. upgraded RAM) are likely produced as a standard practice; therefore, it may be prudent to wait at least a couple weeks till we get more reports.

Of course, if one needs a computer now, then there's nothing else to do but order.
