Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Sad to say I am once again disappointed.  Upon proper inspection, there is infact a reasonably deep scratch next to the right hand USB port.  I know this has nothing to do with IR, so i will open another topic about build quality.  This is now my second machine damaged on arrival.

I am now on hold waiting to speak to AppleCare.

Hello, Im sorry to hear that . Infact I got mine with a dent on bottom cover. Since its on Unibody I suspect they will replace entire machine for you fingers crossed. Else it will be a pain for technical people to take apart batteries and logicbaord and everything to replace it on new Unibody

You'll be getting a new machine. They only replace displays. Hopefully you'll get a Samsung display though.

They said they would replace bottom case and display. So its the same machine with new parts. Im happy as long as they dont mess it up and maintain it properly without scratching or denting , cuz it really puts me off when something like that happens

IR, dented, scratched, light bleed, improper colours, yellow look, not bright enough, etc etc. Great idea getting the work done in China.

I read that it would cost Apple an extra 5% to get the work done in North America, and of course get the quality back to where it used to be. 5%, I'm pretty sure most apple users who already over pay, would pay that 5% and you'd see a lot less of these kind of threads. I'm sure there's more of these threads to come btw Apple.

If you won't handle the quality control, your customers will, with their wallets.

I heard this too over the weekend and don't really think it is accurate at all.  The differential between labor costs is nowhere near 5%, and the GAIN in lack of shipping, reduce IP loss/costs etc. can't make up for it enough.  I DO believe we are moving in the direction of closing the gap, but the price differential on an item like this has to be closer to 50% than 5%.

And the qualty issue here is one of a component, which would most likely continue to be made OoC, so this type of problem would most likely persist.

No, I think he's right. I watched a report on CNN and they said it would cost something like $25 more per iPhone to have it made in the U.S. (not totally sure on the numbers, but it's in the right ball park). However, cost is not the only issue. The other thing that China has that the U.S. doesn't is manufacturing engineers. There are just not enough manufacturing engineers in North America to produce the volume of devices that Apple requires. So, you can thank the education system for that.

Well, at 25$ more that's already 15% more to produce.  But indeed, would only be 4% of the un-subsidized price or 12.5% of the sub'd price.

I'd still really like to see the research on it though

Really? That's cool. Personally, I'd much prefer that myself, because you know you'll still have an otherwise good machine. Plus, I trust the repair guys' attention to detail a lot more than the workers who built it in the first place, so you should be in good hands.

Which model you ordered? BTO or the basic one?

Because I plan to reorder one.

    Thanks!

I ordered mine from Online Store Basic one but with 16GB RAM. I took this decision because 2.3Ghz and 2.6Ghz wouldnt make much difference to me, In gaming performance is mostly dependent on GPU since both models have same I thought it would be wise to go with base model with higest amount of RAM

I've done further checking on the two week "40" Samsung (according to appleserialnumberinfo) machines I received and as far as I can tell they are in perfect condition.  Did some screen tests and found zero dead pixels and there is zero blemishes on the machines itself.  This is how everyone should have gotten their machines when they were launched months ago.

All models I had ordered were  2.3 GHz 16GB/256GB

I have ordered a total of 4, the two I had gotten before this were same configuration and had LG screens with IR.  One was week 39 and the earliest one a few weeks before that.

You should sell your other good Samsung rMBP to someone on this thread. I think that "Golf1410" (I think that's his name) guy would buy it.

    I see! Thanks!

I believe that your orders may built by week 39 or 40, that's nice!

I worry about if I just order one without any upgrade, I may get LG screen....

This is specifically for people ou there on discussion forum.Actually i had some question's regarding my rmbp.I had a chat with the ER guy and he told me the same thing as some of u have already heard that we have sold a million of these machine's and discussion forum has random people with their own issues collectively raising their voice.I know that's absolutely crap and these machine's with Lg display's are plagued with issues but now that i have one with an LG Display and i have had this machine for 3 months now,IR is prominent and i cant even get it repalced since we dont have apple stores in our country.I m out of the 14 day warranty period and i bought mine from Apple store Grand Central. The screen except for the IR is awesome but then since i have come across this forum i just cant stop crying cause i spent 2000 dollars which i had earned for over 2 years to get this marvel of engineering. My brain's are just not working and i am too upset to write anything even.I m student and have been an Apple admirer for long.I thought they would fix it via a software update but Dr Sly was absolutely correct when he told me that this very issue was a hardware problem.Couldn't use my mac with a free happy mindset ever since i got to know about this. What should i do????.Please....

Aren't you glad you took the red pill?
(Ignore that if you didn't get it)

    Anyway...

Where do you live? Can you take your rMBP into an authorized Apple repair shop (i.e. NOT the Apple Store)? If so, do that.

Yep, I had my screen replaced and received a Samsung display. It's been working great.

So was the part number on your work order reciept 661-7171? Sorry if I missed the reply in the discussion (its a big one :-)
