Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Hi, can you send an email to Tim Cook himself? Try your best to contact him and send a link to this forum. Tell him about our sadness. Please keep us updated about contacting Tim Cook........ I miss you Steve Jobs

Contact apple tech support and make sure to tell them that you can't reach Apple store for replacement. They will find a solution, such as sending the machine to the nearest Apple store in a different country. Make sure also to tell them that all LG replacements were failed. Tell them that the majority of customers who replaced their screens with LG failed for 2, 3, and sometimes 4 times.

    Don't give up.....

The IR does NOT fade away with time. In fact, in many cases it seems to get worse.

So, call the repair shops in your area and find one that is certified to replace Retina displays on the new Macbook Pro. This is important. They can't JUST be an authorized Apple repair centre. They must be specifically certified to replace Retina displays as well.

Once you've found a good Retina-certified repair shop, take your laptop into them, show them the image retention issue, and then ask them to replace the screen, under warranty, with part # 661-7171. Don't take "no" for an answer. Be ready to show them this ASC forum thread and any other web pages complaining about the IR issue.

    Good luck!

I hate when Apple's customer service points at "millions of Retina sold".

Apple sold 4million Macs (desktop and laptop) in Q3.

I don't know what the ratio is but let's say 50-50. Out of the resulting 2 million, top of the line Apple laptops ($2000+) usually count for a third of the sales so roughly 600k.

That 600k includes Retina and non-Retina. Considering Retina commands a higher price, the 1/3 rule of thumb probably is still valid but let's be nice ot Apple and go for 50-50 again.

That's an upper limit of 150k Retina Macbook Pros for Q3. The rMBP launched mid-quarter but assuming pace of sales hasn't slowed down all the way to Oct1 it is impossible for rMBP sales to have crossed the 300k mark at best estimates, let alone the "millions" the customer service people claim.

PS: All of this is irrelevant to the quality but just pointing out that even their excuses are mostly lies.

The image retention issue is awful, but your location is not making it any easier for you. I have no idea what you should do. Does anybody ELSE have some ideas?

I haven't seen the ad to which you refer.  But they probably mean all "retina" displays, like on iPhones, iPods, and iPads.  It's all marketing magic.  It's smoke and mirrors.

Those of you who have been offered a partial refund, how much did they offer you?

Has anyone gotten a LG screen in week 40 or is it safe to say that the LG have stopped being used. Of course this would just be factual, but I am getting ready to buy my macbookpro retina and I am just hoping I won't need to play the lottery in order to get my new computer :S

Not ads. I'm referring to what Apple customer reps told Apple2209, gam3r and others.
