Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I think we need to make a video of this and put it on Youtube. Terminal and using it could be confusing to non-techie users.

Like any service provider the back and forth with the customer is 2 way.   Getting testy, saying too much or making up stuff to get a repair doesn't work.   If you describe your situation cleanly, say how it effects your ability to use the computer shouldn't be a issue.

Where this breaks down and gets people upset, is where you have someone repeatively order a laptop, only to return because it has a problem several times.   I can't think of any real life situation where the product would be pursued that desperately.  There are some instances mentioned here in this thread, but after a couple of failed experiences I would walk away.

    I agree, but...

I think that the reason people have stuck it out this long is because (A) the machine's design is great and, when it has the Samsung screen, it really is amazing (B) we know that this is an LG-specifc manufacturing/design defect and that the Samsung screens do NOT have the issue, and (C) other than time (which IS money, I know), it doesn't cost anything to play the lottery or keep bugging Apple about this.

So, knowing that if you keep at it, you will get your dream machine, is what keeps people going.

That's your choice and you're free to do so. I also gave up after three tries to see how the issue develops. But if I were to keep trying, I would have returned within 14 days and that's my recommendation to everyone else too. The risk of getting stuck with a defective $2600 product is non-negligible. If you're within 14 days you're in control, outside of that Apple is the boss.

I agree. Return, return, return, jackpot! If that's what it takes. I really think that things are starting to improve though.

Ahem...Dr. Sly, is there something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?

Isn't there an app for that floating around that doesn't require the terminal?

Yeah, I think someone wrote a script. Google'd script retina lg samsung detect and got this in the results:

Somebody already made a video. Couldn't find the script though. I'm sure it's somewhere in this thread.

One armed bandits have never been generous in my experience.  But some think their luck will eventually improve with experience.

I understand the allure of this laptop, just a shame some go through such misery/hassle to get one.

Thank you, I was able to obtain the information. The screen is LP. I just bought this a few days ago. It seems to be working fine however I do not want to run the risk of problems occuring in the future.

    1. Have there been problems associated with the Samsung?

    2. Would you recommend I return it to the store and request another one?

    3. If so, I don't know that they will open several computers until they find one with a Samsung DIsplay.

Just ordered mine today, couldnt go on without a machine to work on anymore!

I asked my retailer about availability of BTO machines and just recently some 2.6/16/512/UK came up on his wholesale provider from UK and i have made the order!

On Wednesday it should be at the shop and by tomorrow they said they would be able to send me the serial number!

Crossing my finger cause if i get in problems even out of the box i am headed to a service point (consumer rights in Europe with Apple products suck, in case of a dead pixel imagine that there is nothing they can do)

    4000USD lighter and very anxious!

    Guys,

I've been following this thread for a while.  Just ordered a BTO 2.6, 16GB, 512GB last week hoping I would get the Samsung display.  Yep!  It looks great.  It is a week 39. Sounds like they are using only Samsung on new builds

Normal problems that you MIGHT get with any notebook but nothing compared to LG problems

    2. Would you recommend I return it to the store and request another one?

Are you kidding? if you've read even one page of this thread you'd know the answer would be YES, return it.

    3. If so, I don't know that they will open several computers until they find one with a Samsung DIsplay.

They will not open any boxes. Return and get your money back or you can try to get them to exchange it telling them that you have an LG and you KNOW it defective despite their claims that it's a feature.

Personally, I would return it and get my money back and either go to a different store, order online or wait. Regardless, don't wait beyond 14 days.
