Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

It's hard to say for certain. Reports are coming in that LG has been ditched. So far we've had half a dozen week 40s, all Samsung. It's all positive so far. However, it could be just a Samsung batch or temporary hold on LG.

If it keeps happening over the next two weeks, that would be enough to convince me. YMMV.

My sis's got a new retina macbook pro in Korea recently (a few weeks ago). I bought a retina macbook pro when it was released in the States. She's got a Samsung one; I've got a LG one. Yesterday, we met and tried to compare these two laptops in many ways.

Well, clearly, mine has shown the burn-in problem (strangely I noticed this issue, since I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion). My sis' laptop didn't show the burn-in problem. In terms of tone, both latops look fine. But in terms of white point (color), Samsung panel looks yellowish (looks like D55-60), my LG panel looks clear white (around D65---seems better calibrated). I agree the Samsung one is better for burn-in. But the LG one seems better for color at this stage.

Bought the rMBP at the end of August. Had an LG screen with terrible IR problems. Unfortunately I got to an Apple Store after the 14-day no-questions-asked exchange window.

At first, the Genius tried to tell me the screen test falls "within spec". After some persuasion, he admitted to the problem, and offered to have the screen replaced. Since I was outside of the 14-day window, I decided to go for it.

As others have noted, I too can confirm that item number 661-7171 corresponds to a SAMSUNG (LSN...) screen. After 3 days the screen was replaced, and so far after 3 days of use I see no sign of IR problems. The screen is beautiful, and I can't see any change in quality compared to the LG one. I also don't have any yellow tinting problems as reported by others.

My advice - If you have the LG screen with IR issues and can't get a completely new machine, opt for the screen to be replaced, it worked out great for me.

    Hope this helps someone.

I am dealing with Apple's call centre team right now on the terrible Screen Ghosting issue.

Main points are noted as follow:

    Purchased: Aug 2012 in Singapore

    Issue discovered: Mid Sep

Symptom: First observed problem when the Safari search box "ghosted" even after the broswer was closed.

Screen model: "LP" (as indicated in the terminal command query)

Call centre contacted (Singapore/Asia Pacific): 26 Sep 2012

Apple's initial reply: This is the first case they have heard of.

Apple's latest's reply: The technical team is actually aware of the issue. However, this is expected of an IPS display.

My response: This is not acceptable.  Apple is telling me to accept an inferior product.  Why so when I had not experienced the same problem with my 5 year old iMac?

    Apple's proposal: "Repair"

My response: I want a refund.  However, I would have to observe due process and allow apple an opportunity to make good the promise by way of "repair".  Should the "repair" fail to reticfy the issue, I will push for a full refund based on the Singapore's Lemon Law.

The entire experience was frustrating. Will keep this forum posted on the outcome.

so after following this discussion for weeks its my turn to say something:

    Production week: 28 (July)

    CPU speed: 2.6GHz/2.7GHz

Family name: Become a pro user to see this information. (sorry)

    Screen size: 15 inch

    Screen resolution: 2880x1800 pixels

    Colour: Aluminium

    Capacity: 16GB

with a LG Screen, noticed Ghosting after reading this and makeing a test on a gray background.

called apple and went to the apple provider to fix it. after they told me i have to wait for a new screen cause apple is out of displays at the moment....i waited and waited...

today after 3 weeks its enough, i called apple again, they put my order on a high priority and if in 2 days nothing will arrive i get a new machine ( hopefully because my macbook got another hardware problem with the ssd...)

so much problems with this machine its unbelivable...

I will let u know in a couple of days if its gonna be a happy end or just a new start of repairing and waiting
