Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    Hardware test says: 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0)

Apple said its the SSD. Probably have to exchange it.

Model:- MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) (CTO)
    Codename:- No codename assigned.
Build Country:- This unit was built in China
Build Year:- This unit was built in the second half of 2012.
Build Week- Week 13 (March) or week 40 (September)
Production Nr.:- This unit was number 1290 to be built that week.

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    It's a LG.

I am reading this forum already 3 weeks. I was very happy when I heared that all the people received an Samsung that ordered the rMBP that was build in week 40. Unfortunately I received a LG.

I checked the monitor for dead pixels , it didnt have any.

Now I will do some tests to check if there is any burn in.

Should I play some games to make it heat up a bit since I hared that makes the problem even more obvious?

    Any tips ?

I have 14 days time to make my decision , return it or keep it.

What would you suggest in the care I do not have any burn in ?

Unfortunatley your's is a week 39. The website you check your info is one week ahead of the real week.

No, Mayday.ns is correct.  Week "40" according to appleserialnumberinfo.com is what we were going by.  This means Apple has not switched to all Samsung displays.  The only hope now is that the LG displays don't have image retention.

Certainly sounds like it. There has been a higher population of Samsung coming through, but clearly LG are still being put in.

I did some burn in test. I can see a burn in after few min. However its not that severe as I have seen on some youtube videos. I will do some more tests after I increase the temperature of the laptop.

I will let you know about the results.

You should just buy one of Dainbridge's rMBP laptops.

He has two and they're both Samsung.

I am dealing with Apple's call centre team right now on the terrible Screen Ghosting issue.

Main points are noted as follow:

    Purchased: Aug 2012 in Singapore

    Issue discovered: Mid Sep

Symptom: First observed problem when the Safari search box "ghosted" even after the broswer was closed.

Screen model: "LP" (as indicated in the terminal command query)

Call centre contacted (Singapore/Asia Pacific): 26 Sep 2012

Apple's initial reply: This is the first case they have heard of.

Apple's latest's reply: The technical team is actually aware of the issue. However, this is expected of an IPS display.

My response: This is not acceptable.  Apple is telling me to accept an inferior product.  Why so when I had not experienced the same problem with my 5 year old iMac?

    Apple's proposal: "Repair"

My response: I want a refund.  However, I would have to observe due process and allow apple an opportunity to make good the promise by way of "repair".  Should the "repair" fail to reticfy the issue, I will push for a full refund based on the Singapore's Lemon Law.

The entire experience was frustrating. Will keep this forum posted on the outcome.

Just go for the repair. You'll be happy with it.

Return it. Don't take the chance that IR will appear after the 14-day NQA return window.

My IR problem got noticeably worse over time. If you're within the 14-day NQA return window, I'd return it.

Yes, I would HATE having to return retina MacBook Pro 2.3/16/256 with a pristine Samsung display.  I'm actually having trouble finding any issue with either of the ones I have to decide which one to return/sell.
