Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have sent you an email. Good luck. I told you everything.

I wish you all the best. You need your strong point when you talk to them. It is about argument.

Protip: Email addresses are considered personal info and removed. As a workaround you can put your email address in your profile and make it visible to registered users (at least temporarily). That way it won't be removed.

Yes, i second that. I am going through the pain right now.

I had to explain the problem to 3 different call centre people - the last one being a dedicated "relations" officer when the first two contact officers were unable to comprehend the issue.  Even so, the relations officer initially claimed no awareness of existing issue of similar natural. What audacity.  Despite that, I still had to chase the last officer 2 times over the phone on separate junctures because she was late to reply as promised earlier and had no courtesy to update me that she needed more time.

For the unproductive wait while Apple bumps around trying to figure it out, I had been stuck to my desktop for the past 1 week and dodging away from my clients' places (I am a web developer).  If any of you are reading this, I urge you to either delay buying this engineering marvel (yes i am still in love with the rMBP) or return it within 14 days if you get a LG display.  Avoid dealing with Apple call centre because it can be such a pain.

What other options do we (unlucky ones) have except no questions asked return ?

I am going to call tomorrow the apple care service line and see what are my options. Maybe they can send me a new device and if so I think I will get a new 14 days to decide.

I am thinking its better just to get some other laptop ( MB air 13 ) even though I wanted this laptop so bad

p.s. I tested it after gaming and it does not get worse ! It is still not severe.

I'm also experiencing this image retention.

I just spoke with Apple support. I was quickly helped, and the first woman ran me step-by-step with resetting the PRAM, etc. After that [predictably] failed, she redirected me to her senior manager, who understood image rentention/ghosting existed on the new rMBPs. She says I can have the entire machine replaced free of charge, despite being out of the 14 day no-questions-asked period. She even gave me her contact information in case the Apple store (the one from which I purchased the rMBP) refused to replace it.

I have an LG display, though I'm not sure if that's of any significance.

    Serial number: C02J*****KQ1

That's the only reason why you have image retention.  Few if any Samsung displays have image retention.

Right. That's what I've gathered just now. Apple support scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for me this Saturday, so hopefully something good comes out of it. I heard machines manufactured post-week 39 are 'good', meaning they do not suffer from image retention; is this true?

Bravo, that's going to be my move in a 3-4 days, give them one or two shots. Then show myself some self respect as Apple doesn't seem to want to show it's customers any....at least not in any consistant way. Of course that would require new marching orders from the top as right now it's deny deny deny and the smoke and mirrors game.

I am dealing with Apple's call centre team right now on the terrible Screen Ghosting issue.

Main points are noted as follow:

    Purchased: Aug 2012 in Singapore

    Issue discovered: Mid Sep

Symptom: First observed problem when the Safari search box "ghosted" even after the broswer was closed.

Screen model: "LP" (as indicated in the terminal command query)

Call centre contacted (Singapore/Asia Pacific): 26 Sep 2012

Apple's initial reply: This is the first case they have heard of.

Apple's latest's reply: The technical team is actually aware of the issue. However, this is expected of an IPS display.

My response: This is not acceptable.  Apple is telling me to accept an inferior product.  Why so when I had not experienced the same problem with my 5 year old iMac?

    Apple's proposal: "Repair"

My response: I want a refund.  However, I would have to observe due process and allow apple an opportunity to make good the promise by way of "repair".  Should the "repair" fail to reticfy the issue, I will push for a full refund based on the Singapore's Lemon Law.

The entire experience was frustrating. Will keep this forum posted on the outcome.

Always take a refund, you'll be happier in control of your money. Apple isn't showing you any respect by knowingly selling you a defective product.
